This did not happen. It's a joke that came into being and flew around the internet in the 90's. It's been listed as being between a British ship and an Irish and/or Scottish lighthouse and also between a US ship and a million other lighthouses. It's funny nonetheless, but it was a popular joke inside of the US Navy (I was in at the time) that grew like most jokes and turned from a joke to rumor to legend to fact.
@MrAristes Of course it's a joke, it's as ridiculous as the "traffic cop locks on to F-16 with laser and almost gets killed by laser-guided bomb" myth. But an awesome story nonetheless!
There never was a USS Montana, one was proposed toward the end of WWII but the war ended before it was built. Montana did not exist in Benedict Arnold's time. Although montaña is mountain in spanish I don't think they named their ships that way, nor could I find any reference to Arnold commandeering a Spanish ship. I could be wrong about how they name them though.
Sorry guys, Snopes says the canadian incident is an urban legend. I'd post the link, but youtube doesn't allows that. Just google 'navy vs. lighthouse'.
@hamguy01 Yes, and the last montana was in the 40's. I believe Bennidict Arnold commendered the first from the british royal navy way back, a cargo ship if memory serves, he named it montana, etc etc. Theres been about half a dozen or so since.
serisouly idiots, seriously, this never happened.........sigh, people are getting stupider every day. i eman really people, u see some fake article and then you see a car commercial and suddenly it happened. go die in a fire
only the us navy could do such a thing. you would have to kill yourself if you did this in the royal navy, you would never ever be allowed to forget it ! ............. hm armed forces , be the best !
this did actually happen between US navy an Canadian lighthouse in October 1995 transcript an US ship nae in vid are incorrect(slightly) but same scenario
lol ...i remember reading about this a few years ago... it happened around 1995..but it wasnt the Irish sea.. it was in Canadian waters .. still funny to watch lol

Hard to believe this could be a true story. Ships have fixed lights and all buoys or lighthouses have blinking lights.

The USS montana was a cargo ship sunk in WW1 by german u-boats. I don't think they had radar in those days.
Fitzcard 1 year ago
@Fitzcard You do realize the Navy re-uses names right?
For example, the USS Texas:
First United States battleship, served 1895-1911.
BB-35 United States New York class Dreadnought, served in BOTH world wars.
Second Virginia-class guided missile cruiser CGN-39.
Second Virginia-class nuclear attack submarine SSN-775.
All bearing the name USS Texas.

There was a joke during first world war about the americans:
When germans fire, the english, and americans hide.
When the amricans fire, than everyone hide.

@NordJager What's the difference between an RAF pilot and his airplane? The plane stops whining when you shut off the engine.
What do you do if a polish soldier throws a grenade at you? Pull the pin and throw it back!
Did you see the new French flag? It's a white cross emblazoned on a white background!
What do German pilots eat before combat? Luftwaffles!
Why do Italian tanks have rearview mirrors? So they can see the battle!
