I can't believe how totally the Robert Zemeckis/Jim Carrey version tried to rip this Richard Williams version off. Nearly every key scene, every shot is almost identical - except that this, made 40 years earlier is much, much better in every way. Thanks for sharing Williams' genius.
A lot of the backgrounds remind me of the Albert Finney 1970 version, especially Scrooge's room, his counting house, and the childhood school. Having the ghosts look like the original illustrations from the book is a plus.
OMG finally after 40 years I finally found it !! This was the BEST version of Scrooge I ever saw. As a six year old I remember running out of the living room with the hair on the back of my head standing straight up when his dead partner showed up in chains . Thank-you for posting this- it brings back wonderful memories - even scary ones .
The Academy's reaction to this movie was disappointing.
Sure, it WON. That's great. But people were so outraged that a film that was originally shown on television won an Academy Award that they actually added a new rule saying that anything initially shown on TV is ineligible.
As if this somehow cost them dignity just because it was shown on TV first.
I've been looking for this. I haven't seen it since the 70's when I was a kid. It was one of my favorites. they just don't run it on broadcast TV much anymore
This version of A Christmas Carol has always been my favorite ever since I watched it on television back in '71. I was fortunate to find it on VHS about 5 years back.
I believe it was Gerald Scarfe who said animation should be used as an art form rather then funny silliness. This film is living proof of animation as an art form. I love it.
@TheThiefArchive I havent personally seen it myself, but Ive seen screenshots instead, and as described it was faded so it looked kind of redish, however the stock itself is in good condition and peronally I think the image quality can be restored which is something im hoping to do soon to also prove my worth for something one day :D

This deserved that year's animation Oscar.

The song at the beginning is really beautiful. :) Is it a popular Christmal carol in English-speaking countries or is it composed for this animation?
N10me 1 year ago
@N10me Or actually I found it already. It is "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen".

@N10me
"God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" has been around at least since the time portrayed in this movie. Victorian England. It might even be older.
It is my favorite Christmas carol.

I've seen allot of animated versions of this story but this one and the one from 1969 are the only two that got it right. :)

I used to watch this every Christmas when I was a kid. Looking at Jacob Marley, I'm really wondering how I didn't get nightmares...
