I'm graduate at language and literature in my country (Brazil) and actually I'm seriously thinking about making a thesis about art in medias like books or movies,in comparison to videogames, and man, you really gave me so much ideas of which games to talk about!
@Goukeban That's terrific! It's a very relevant subject, one that I'm interested in myself (obviously). Good luck writing your thesis, and if you need any other examples just let me know.
THANK YOU!!!! finally a gamer who dosn't worship violence in games -bought a wii- Games that think outside the box - wii - are far more impressive, even if they do flop by other's opinions~ love your vidoes~
I'm so glad to see any publicity for this game. It's so evocative and artistic and beautiful. Words not often associated with video games. It reminds me of of Narnia springing to life after a too-long winter.
I'm so glad to see any publicity for this game. It's so evocative and artistic and beautiful. Words not often associated with video games. While this mechanic is pretty original, (although I guess you could say it's PacMan in a new skin) it's not really the point of the game. Flower is closer to a painting or poem that you can fly through. It truly is interactive art, drawing the viewer in to participate in a vision. It reminds me of of Narnia springing to life after a too-long winter.

Wow should I buy this game? It looks beautiful I´m a fan of those games who look like art that´s why I´m such a big fan of the okami it looks like the whole landscapes and trees and flowers are painted on japanese scroll with those brush things.
@dameronWolf Okami is a beautiful game, just like this one. There's no reason not to buy it, it's only $10. It's always listed alongside the PS3's best.
I notice a trend in your videos. Many of the games you like and believe are innovative are to be on the PS2 or PS3. I never got to own a PS2 (too expensive at the time, not enough interest in video games at the time either) but seeing how many great games there were on the system makes me think I should get one, if I can't get all the games I want downloaded from PSN once (or if) I get a PS3. And of course, I will get this game. Thanks for all the info!
Flower is the only reason I miss my PS3. I got a YLOD a month ago, which was two weeks after the guarantee expired. The only game I really felt worth purchasing. - I remember playing this early Sunday mornings with my girlfriend, such a wonderful experience.
I thank you for making these videos, a true tribute to these amazing video games.
In all the time I played Flower, I never thought of it as the dream of a flower. I saw it only as an overexagerrated analogy of the struggle between nature and technology. You have shown me another way of thinking about the game, and for that, I thank you.
@Killer7Samurai That makes me really happy, thanks! It saddens me whenever I hear people misunderstand the purpose of the game, that's partly why I made this video. I'm glad I was able to open up the game for you!
i particuly(excused my spelling) cried in the end of flower This should be an example for games to be means of work of art and not always to be a child's plaything
My favourite thing about this game (and indeed all of my favourite games) is the emotion it conveyed. In the level when the power goes out, I felt a real sense of fear, despair and unease. And then, to have that ONE flower explode into glorious triumph in the final level, it was a real gaming moment for me.
Top game! Great video!!
Please do SotC next! :-)
(if you have an HDTV, buy a component cable - it's revolutionised my PS2 playing!!)
Thanks for the comment! I'm one step ahead of you actually, I'm currently working on a 2-part episode featuring both of Fumito Ueda's works, Ico and SotC, so look for that sometime in March. And although I have a component cable, my recorder only has a composite port, so I'm stuck with it unless I choose not to record :(.
Well I just bought one for my PS2 and I'm really pleased with how good it makes things look. Not that they looked bad before, necessarily, but standard def pictures seem to look twice as bad on hd sets!
I bought this game just this week, i new it was a pretty game with spectacular graphics but as you pointed out its story and message are the real stars.
I remember playing it thinking over its message of escapism vs the oppressive real world. it astounded me how concise it was. I finished it in a single night but I was not upset because of its length. it was the perfect length, it allows for someone to sit down and get the entire experience in one sitting without feeling rushed through it
Thanks for the comment! I never actually thought about it that way before, and I completely agree. It is the perfect length because it allows you to experience the entire message in one sitting. Glad you liked the game!
I find games of shorter concise length not only more appropriate to the stories being told, but also that it makes the games more replayable. Portal is another example of this. Often I'd rather developers boil down a singleplayer experience than fatten it with filler content.
Yes, Portal is absolutely the same way. The most regrettable contra-example is Okami. AMAZING game, but packed with unecessary filler to make it seem bigger and longer than it really should be. Examples: I never used a single item in battle, there are really only 3 weapons with 5 skins each, and treasure chests with useless items are everywhere.
I recently played through Braid, and it also felt like there was no filler content. Each puzzle seems unique. That's not to say I don't have a ton of games with filler content that I've thoroughly enjoyed.
I think the best practice seems to be close to what Portal gave us. A concise narrative with optional gameplay through advanced levels and challenge modes. However, I think this shorter style unfortunately necessitates a lower price point.
Now I watched the full video. You were really good at showing the feelings conveyed in the game. Maybe I can use this as an argument for the "games are art" side one day.^^
I hear ya. I never thought I'd be able to play all of the great PS2 games until I bought the system in summer 2008 when the price was reasonable. I'm sure you'll get the chance eventually.
Lovely work. I like how you create a visual essay feel - with the depth and insight of the well-written voice-over, combined with the immediacy of the video clips.
made me cry a little <3 Beautiful, Will get a ps 3 soon and this game :)
