I´ve watched this embarassing wrong teaching video a few years ago and can´t believe, that it´s still showed. so again: THIS is totally out of tune, each movement is wrong and this moron hasn´t got any basic idea of how the sitar should be treated.

You play the instrument as if it were an electric guitar as well as give very bad feedback on how to meend correctly or when/how to use chikari.

@polsitar I think this guy is doing a fine job. I find it very informative. I learned how to bend the sitar and produce vibration of notes on my sitar just watching this video. I hope he produces more videos. I know he is not a master sitarist, but he is getting there. I find his explanation very valuable and I am sure I am not the only one!

Well, I'm going to throw in my 2 cents. I wouldn't say you can't learn a great deal from vid's. The Ashwin Batish tutor vid's are very good, there's just not enough of them. I would love to find a teacher in Downtown L.A., the only guy I know wants to charge me $50 hr. and I just can't hack it. In this nice guy's defence he seem's like he's got a lot of it right. Maybe tuck in those Middle, Ring & Pinky finger's and use the mizrab only on the top stings.
Oh yeah, he IS playing wrong - I can play better sitar with my feet. But that´s no reason to give in a teaching video - I love and respect the instrument and indian classical music. This guy has surely none knwoledge about what he´s talking.

The problem is that he is putting forth a video showing the "basic playing techniques" of sitar and everything he says or shows is incorrect. It is great to be interested in sitar but dont put yourself out there as someone who has knowledge when you dont. Believe me everything he is showing is wrong. What is the point. He is not helping anybody by doing this. It just gives a sitar beginner terrible info. In fact anyone who has taken just one lesson can tell this guy is just plain wrong.
Well, I don't know anything about techniques of the sitar. All I know it s a very very difficult and complex instrument and it was invented by a guy named Ravi Shankar, who is considered the father of Indian music. HOw he came up with this beautiful instrument, I don't know. But I like the sound of it and that is why I listen to it. But the way this guy was vibrating the strings sounded cool. Wish I could play as good as he does. I would be glad if I could play half of what he does.
Ajrahi, Sitar has been around for hundreds of years. Ravi Shankar DID NOT INVENT IT. We are criticizing this guy because he put this video out as an "Instructional Video", but all the information is DEAD WRONG. If he had just said "Hey, I like sitar. here is me playing" we would have no problem with him. But for anyone looking for basic sitar technique this video is so wrong it hurts. I study sitar with a current disciple of Pandit Ravi Shankar, and I know good technique.

The technique for playing is hard, plus the music itself is very very complicated and deep. Takes years to get the hang of the music. One MUST get this knowledge from a teacher.

I take private lessons in Los Angeles. Search the internet for teachers in your area. For a really really basic (but at least correct) overview do a search in youtube for "expertvillage sitar". She isnt a great master or anything, but she gives correct information at least. You can get an idea of what correct technique is. Just do what you can to find a good teacher in your area. You cant learn from videos. Sitar is far to complex for videos.

If you learn to learn the Indian Classical Music this video is not recommended to see !
In this case you have to learn with a teacher who will learn you all the technics and the ways of playing sitar.
But if you want to play sitar only for his so-specific sound ... Yes it's enough and this basic training is good !

Basically you can't learn from youtube videos.
You need to find a good teacher.
