According to oral history, the fainting goat was a good asset protector. Handlers would keep them with other (more valuable) animals, like sheep. When a predator came around, the fainting goat would collapse, effectively sacrificing itself so that the other animals could safely run away.

They have a condition called myotonia congenita. It causes immediate muscle stiffening caused by too much sodium in the cells, and too little chloride ion. Spooking causes immediate influx of sodium. When the muscles tighten, they can't immediately relax, and they fall over. They aren't hurt by it, though, so that's good. We just learned about this in my "intro in to cell" course.

You try stiffening your muscles and see if it hurts, or don't try and take my word for it that it doesn't. It's only a defense mechanism, to what extent it's successful, I don't know.

Some farmers actually use them for that purpose: They are put into flocks of regular goats so when a predator attacks, it'll kill the myotonic goat and the normal goats can run away.
