@KingKook Is it really any of your business what Chris McCandless chose to do with his life and what others think of it? No. It isn't. So have your opinions, but keep them to yourself. Be inspired by anyone you want and let us do the same.
@stevealaska73 To begin, anyone who's fond of Thoreau's philosophies is by definition a hopeless romantic. What does this mean? It means CM entertained an extremely unrealistic belief about the NOBILITY OF MAN to be found in "THE WILDERNESS," a belief he adopted from Thoreau whose wilderness was a gentle wooded lot just 1.5 miles from his family home. Thanks to Thoreau's fantasy many other distressed people have disappeared into the wild, seeking existential relief. Nature is a BITCH with claws.
@stevealaska73 You stated "Oh & you forgot the Army, Navy, and Air Force dick head." Do you think the Air force would appreciate you calling them dick heads? That's not very respectful. So turn in your "superior being" membership card, you're out of the club. Are you planning a little hike through the Yukon Territory in sandals? Or maybe the Gobi Desert with just a juice box and stick of gum?.... Good luck...
@stevealska73 OK, so I muffed the timeline a bit, the point is, CM didn't graduate from Emory or Harvard or kindergarten or whatever as a certified, veteran wilderness expert. You think Ivy League = actual common sense?! Ha! HA HA!!! He had a decent personality but romantic delusions about nature and poor real world judgment. If you wanna celebrate someone worthwhile, how 'bout ANYONE who ONLY risks their life unwillingly to save someone else, like Coast Guard or Marines or Mommy. U R deluded.
@KingKook Im deluded? Now that is worth the ha ha's. Yeah you "muffed" the timeline and everything else you typed, ya douche. You had no point. And you STILL have no point. Your name fits perfectly.
You dont have to be an expert to travel the country on foot and go into the woods.
Oh & you forgot the Army, Navy, and Air Force dick head.
Alaska can not and should not and should not be explained in human words. It is to extraordinary to bring down buy trying to wrap the human mind around how amazing it really is. To describe it would be to understate it immensity.
The thing is, the real dude from Into the Wild, Christopher McCandless, was TOLD by locals that wintering at that camper was a crazy, stupid stunt and he did it anyway 'cause unfortunately he was emotionally/mentally compromised. He wasn't daring and brave, he was ill and misguided. Mental illness drives people to extremes. Sean Penn is mentally compromised so he was irrationally sympathetic. The story he told was inaccurate. More Hollywood BS.
Chris didn't "winter" in the bus. He got there during the end of break up (April for those in the lower 48 who dont know what "break up" means) and was found dead four months later at the end of summer 1992.
He also graduated from Emory University. You dont graduate from college if you are unable to make intelligent decisions. One more thing, the only local that any knowledge of Chris' plans was the guy who dropped him off on the trail, Jim Galien. There was no "local" resistance.
This has piqued my interest highly. I loved Into the Wild and Sean Penn is a fascinating actor. Also read the book my Jon Krakauer. Just watched the ep with Quentin Tarantino and Fiona Apple. Superb! It's gotten me into this series.
thats not true.... i see him all the time in downtown san anselmo and he's always alone. and i dont recomend you go up and try to talk to him unless yo really know him... or are friends with his son ;)
Iconoclasts is such a great concept for a show. I loved this episode. I know it's a rather serious subject but I'm sorry sean penn pointing skyward going 'avalanche' and then kicking the crew into action was hysterical. He's such a man. :)
Alaska is too ultimate for human eyes to see. And when they see it, they can't believe it. McCandless was the shit, he knew wisdom that some never acquire in life. I go to Alaska.... this summer for the first time... can't wait
@vandek2 McCandless was a suicidal misfit. He was not experienced enough or equipped with proper gear to undertake such an adventure as Into The Wild. People should not idolize him, they should pity him and learn from his stupid mistakes.
I just added Into the Wild and Supertramp tees onto my page - Also there are other current Alaskan events like corrupt politicians, gold digging strippers and crabbers with crabs. Come on over to see them at echoforsberg's Cafepress page.
Seean, Superbb I hope!!!!!!!

I should add that Robin comes in to the cafe or restaurant to scope it out first. If people look like cool regulars,, then Sean comes in.
