Arshile Gorky had more to do with de Kooning's formative development than any other painter. De Kooning rarely gave an interview in which he did not credit Gorky with having a strong influence on his paintings.
That should be stated, simply because it mattered so much to de Kooning, and so that a new generation of art lovers may learn to appreciate the inextricably linked works of both artists.
