You should learn a bit of philosophy. It's not the confuzian path, the main Mao concepts were about the law of the struggle and the unity of opposites, which allows marxist path being very flexible and conforming.

In the early times of China they stressed on struggle, and from the times of the late Mao they shifted to unity

If China suddenly loosened up, it would likely collapse like the Soviet Union or have civil war again. By slowly opening the economy and gradually then politics, Deng Xiaoping maintained stability and unity in China.
