  • Is the larger portion of the rear sight supposed to have it's hole cut off center to the right of the metal blank?

  • You never reset the rear sight elevation back to 8/3 like the M16A2 target instructions state. Is it not needed?

  • What does the bottom nob with the 6/3 do?

  • Great video for us newbies to ar’s. Stupid question but when you sight your ar in, are you using a front bi-pod?

  • @orangecrush03 You and I are both new to AR's. When my newly acquired Stag 2T-L I used a front grip bi-pod and some blocks to stable my butt stock. Check out Impactguns..com for targets and some AR accessories like Magpul Pmags, slings, exc... Be safe and god bless. FYI........ DONT SHOOT WOLF AMMO!!! :-)

  • @1987jughead

I actually followed the video advice and I didn't use bipods, straps or anything. It took me an entire 30 shot magazine to dial it in... enough to make my next 30 shots all within a 6" circle at 65-70 feet. (I know, not that impressive but it's my first time firing this rifle) The only mod I have done is changing to a Hogue grip. I won't install aftermarket sights until I can proficiently use the factory irons. The rifle shoots GREAT!

  • @orangecrush03 In the Army, we use a sandbag to rest the rifle while zeroing. But some prefer using their bipods. Either way it's fine.

  • U rock!

  • Amazing video sir !

  • Heres a fact, get a scope

  • @playntyme Here is another fact, when the scope breaks (murphy's law) then you have to rely on irons. Simply learn to use your irons & get a scope.

Its that 'one is none, two is one thing'

    :)

  • @SafeArmsReview Brilliant reply brother

  • @playntyme you would still need to zero in your scope duhhhhhh

  • @playntyme Cuz everyone knows a scope doesnt need to be zeroed in.

  • @playntyme Here's a fact, looking through a tube takes time. Even with a scope turned all the way down to 1.1x. The best fit for rifles such as these, unless they're something very specific (ie an SPR), is a zero magnification red dot type optic. Considering most engagements take place within 100m or less, a rifle scope is just so much unnecessary weight at best and a hindrance that gets you killed at worst.

  • Nice Video... Really good looking rig. You explained it so all IDIOTS can understand.. Hope to GOD they dont shoot firearms>>> keep it up your great reviews...

  • @safearmsreview. My colt sporter with non removeable carry handle is set like u specified - great. What is your opinion of the santose improved battlesite zero method.

  • @Armory52 I have worked with the santose zero and it works very well. There is more than one way to sight a rig. Try them all and use the one that works for you.

    :)

  • Thanks. Great vid. Been a while since I zeroed an ar.

  • This is really great, thank you. I was trying to sight mine in (I'm a bit of an AR noob) and I think I was doing it wrong.

  • Nice block of instruction, also include after mechanical adjusts, to record zero and tape in pistol grip and stick in buttstock hidee hole ....later Mr.Olgrunt.

  • i have been curious on how it is realy supose to be done, ive always just guessed, thanks sir great vid

  • what kind of knife was that?

  • Scatches all over your gun use a tool. You fool!!!

  • @perezrick312

not every persons rifle is a safe queen :)

  • Im going to make a video. Which will explain the prpper way. Cause your lost,

  • US Calvary has the Rite in the Rain® All-Weather 25 Meter Zeroing Targets (100 Sheets) for $13.99

  • Pooky; thats true; But civilians do not access to the military sighting target thats in the FM. Thats why some use the large peep site for civilian targets at close range. You will get a better zero if you can download the manual and get the actual zero target in actual true size. Lucky for me I still live outside the post I retired from and they have an off-duty range and provide AR zero target sheets.

  • Great info! Thanks the Chief!

  • looks like a Smith & Wesson M&P 15 MOE.. jus sayin :)

  • @0jensi1 in some crazy conspiracy to make money, Magpul decided to sell MOE furniture to more than one person :D

  • It was a really helpful video ....

  • Will this apply to Troy battle sights? I have a a2 front sight but the flip up rear sight, I was wondering if I do the same with lining up the lines for mechanical zero.

  • Also, Bushmaster manual said:

    * For front sight Move up or down 1 click = 1 square in your paper

** For Windage Move Horizontal Left or Right 3 clicks = 1 square in your paper

**** Please check for that informations because at this point in time I am confusing what I read and what you told us. Thank you again!

( This is the manual came with my AR-15 Bushmaster model M16A2 Y2K I buy 12 years ago!)

  • What do we have to do with Elevation 3/8 (mean 300/800 meters) 1 click up to do all adjustment OR 1 click down to do all adjusment AND return to the original mark at beginning??

I am lost right here!! Please excuse I am stupid (stupid questions but I need to know)

    Thank you very much Sir!

    A Vietnamese boy!

PS: 8/3 ? in your gun say 6/3 that MEAN the M4 only reach to Maximum "600 meters" only compare to the Original Vietnam M16A1 get up to 800 meters

M16A1 rear sight look not the same A2!

  • Thanks for the video,it really helps us newbies when the factory or some doofus at the gun store jacks with the sights. My Bushmaster was all the way to the left and the highest possible setting when i went to the range.

  • YOU sir are bad ass

  • I am currently in the Army and I can say that your video had some wrong info in it my suggestion to you is download FM3-22.9 it has detailed instructions on how to zero a M16A1, A2, or M4. The only time you use the large peep sight is for short range and low light. When you zero you use the small hole. As for the M16 target adjustment all you have to do is read the numbers on the target. The left and right movements are three clicks for every box and the up and down is one click for every box.

  • @pookybr314 Has a Marine i agree %100, but dont get used to it. lol

  • @pookybr314 this was enough info for me to sight in. i didn't even need to watch the video. thanks.

  • @pookybr314 What information is wrong? He mentioned that the small aperture was used in day time shooting. By deductive reasoning, he implied the large aperture was meant for low light. I've also heard the POI changes when you switch apertures.

What if you don't have the M16A2 25 yard zero target? I've seen someone take 2 hrs to zero his rifle because he didn't know how to do the math in his head.

  • nice video really helped give explanation and purpose to the aiming devices. Thanks

  • american iron sights are better than russian iron sights...

  • Can you make a video. How to adjust my car mirror?

    Sorry video.

  • @perezrick312 Yet you watched all the way through I bet! You, my friend, are an ID 10 T

  • Learning definitely takes place with great instruction. Keep up the good work.

  • @SafeArmsReview. What front post would you recommend for 100 yard iron sights. I am shooting 2.5 MOA 5 shot groups with the stock A2 post. I am thinking a smaller round post cold tighten groups. I know 2.5 MOA is good, but I feel the front post is a little big for accuracy.

  • Idk why they make the sights so complicated. Most German rifles have good simple sights...

  • Thank you soo much...Joining the U.S. Army Reserves and have no idea how to shoot a rifle...I will definatelly benefit from the lessons from your videos.....A grateful little Skyy Kitty....>(^-^)<

  • @ThermalSh0ck

it raises the rear sight up or down

  • @gh0strec0n141 thanks man, i was just wondering cause my rear flip up sight doesn't have it.peace

  • ok, now I have tried helping out several of my customers with this "mechanical zero" starting point, and more often than not it never hits paper. So I have to end up watching that impact and dropping it down or bringing it up.

  • Comment removed

  • like the video, I just bought another AR after several years without one and had forgotten how to zero it. this was a huge help.

  • I wish I saw this first before I went to the range and shot 200 rounds at 50m on my new SIG 516 "trying" to zero it. Anyway, I've done the mechanical zeroing today, got the M16A2 25 meter zeroing target at a website and hope to zero this thing within 18 shots this weekend. Thanks for having this excellent tutorial.

  • Good Instruction. That said, it would be nice if you had explained : a) Front sight movement direction (up if group is high...) and b) purpose of markings/adjustments on elivation controls of rear sight.

  • I cant figure out what on the front sight post hes trying to make Flush??

  • @Security98 He is making the base of the front sight post (the circular part with the 4 notches) come up flush with the front sight housing (the part that says "up" seen at 2 min and 30 sec on the video).

  • Excellent video. It’s been 25 years since I was in the military and I wanted to make sure I was sighting my AR in correctly. Clear and concise instructions. Thanks for posting. I look forward to viewing more of your videos.

  • Good Video, thank you! I just realized how off my rear windage sight was.

  • Many thanks...just bought a DTI-15 (great AR for the money).

but it's been almost 40 years since the Army and my M-16,

I needed the refresher...and this was a big help!

  • good job, I just sighted in my Eotech tuesday using the same principles. it's like I was following your instructions,

I must have learned something 40 years ago

  • Seriously helpful! Thank you so much! Used it for my Airsoft M16A1

  • *** This video is misnamed. It should read, "How to Zero your M16 platform...."

    Thanks

  • When I was In the Navy. I Carried an M14. I Have a Springfield M1A Today. I would like to see you do a Video on the M14 Rifle as It is In Use Again by Our Military Making your Video Extremely Important and Timely

  • I Liked The Video. When I was In the Army We Used The M16A1. The Question I Have Is 1) Is The Sight Aperture Based On 1 Minute Of Angle in Your Video. I Have A Match Rifle With 1/4 Minute of angle for Elevation and Wind. 2) Being Trained on the A1 We Used a Similar 25 Meter Zero. But On the Range After Zeroing the Rifle We Changed Aim Point for Different Ranges. we didn't Adjust the Rifle For Different Ranges. Do you have a Video for Adjusting the A2 For Ranges of 200yrds , 300yrds and 600yrds.

  • I believe that this is your best video; and I like alot of your stuff. Please continue to make these very useful and highly informative productions. Thanks for posting.

  • I noticed in the video and on my new AR the the6/3 notch does not match up perfectly with the notch on the carry handle...or the "z" either. Is this normal or should it match up. It rotates back further but is not a "click" more of a "slide". there is also a small "z" that is 2 clicks away from the 6/3. Which should I start at and why if you don't mind helping a fellow Uhmurrican out haha

  • I though I was watching the NRA/ILA grassroots news minute for a second.

  • Outstanding video, thanks!

  • You really should have mentioned about using a front sight adjustment tool. Other than that, top notch video.

  • question. if we have a flip up rear sight with no elevation how would we zero our rifles with these targets?

  • nice knife. what is it?

  • Thank you for this video. It was very informative. God Bless

  • Thank you sir *salute*

I just have one question, does the full rotation of the front sight equal on square?

  • After zeroing at 25m, does anybody know how many clicks to have the sights set for 100m and not 300m?

  • Thanks for the video, very helpful. :)

  • How did you create you video? I am assuming it is created on a Mac, using I Video, am I wrong? What video camera? Great work on your video.. great job teaching the class.. Ignore the jerks out there who like to pick, make jokes, and give their opinion- like they are experts.

  • good video,very helpful,thank you sir. *salute.

  • Thanks dude. I own the Stag Arms Model 4 and now I can actually sight it in with the help of your video. I appreciate the upload.

  • So awesome! Thank you for this post!

  • Also, check out the zero method documented by Lieutenant Colonel Chuck Santose, US Army (ret.) at ar15zeroing(dot)com. He has you adjust your knob so that it bottoms out at 6/3 -2 (that's full clicks, so -4 on a half-click knob). Then you do your zeroing at 50 yards. This allows you to shoot point of aim, point of impact, at 200m (most ranges don't go longer) at the 6/3 -2 setting. If you want to hit something 300m, click it up to 6/3.

  • USMC manual has you zero with the small aperture. Harder to mess up that way as well.

Your knob (mine too) has a 'z' just to the right of the 6/3 marking. What's that all about?

Some knobs take 3 clicks to go from 6/3 to 4. They are full click knobs. Some take 6 clicks to go from 6/3 to 4. Which is yours? What do the squares represent on the target? Full clicks or half clicks?

  • @modex20 Everyone knows you zero with the small peep except him, he won't even listen. He doesn't even know that when you flip back and forth between peeps they are offset not on the same plane, they have a different zero. Shooting at 100 meters with small peep then flip to large the shots will move 4" with M4.

  • @semiautoriflelover1 I can't tell if my larger peep is on the same plane or not. It's a DPMS flat top detachable. I used the "Improved Battle Sight Zero" which involves adjusting the ele knob so that you can zero at 6/3 -4 (half clicks). I zeroed at 50yds with the small peep for a point of aim point of impact at 200yds.

Should I just zero at 6/3 from 25yds then use the large peep for shooting at 200yds? I have a m4 sight radius.

  • @modex20 Watch my latest video, I tell about the santose zero. Zeroing at 50 was perfect, now shoot at 200 to confirm.

  • @modex20 Switching from the larger peep to smaller peer will change the impact at 100 yards/meters by 2.5"-4.5" depending on the brand of rear sight you have, with the M4 and shorter barrel the change is greater. Do a test and let me know how much yours changes, mine was a 4" shift.

  • Thank you, well done, good lighting and it helped me understand and see quite a few things I had questions on...God bless.

  • Quick question. On the AR15 do you leave the rear sight at 6/3 when shooting at 300 meter targets?

  • Great video!

  • Nice job well dont.

  • Great video. Thank you

  • @hcdrums Really?

Thats funny because the bill of sale & owners manual says its a stag arms model 2, 5.56. Then when I wanted to upgrade some parts & I called SA, gave them the s/n they confirmed it & pointed me in the right directions for after market parts.

So I'm pretty sure its a model 2 but if for some reason its not, & there is some big conspiracy, I have no complaints because it works great.

    ;)

  • @SafeArmsReview trust in the deer!! i have the same model.

  • Soldier here...thought I'd say thank you for this video....going to the range this weekend....Im a reservist and it's been a while

  • clean your weapon nasty!

  • THANK YOU VERY MUCH for this info...

  • is a rifle that is zeroed at 300 meters still good to use at 25? because i have been told that the vise-versa does is not true.

  • I will try that when I get my Stag.

  • Thank you. I was able to dial in my M16 on the button. Went shooting with my Marine body and he was very impressed how accurate my rig was. thanks man you full of good info.

  • your video is the most informative and comprehensive instruction on the subject. thank you. I shall look up more of your video posting.

  • Thank for very informative and simple instrction. I bought my first AR-15 yesterday. It's Colt with 16" HB barrel. Carry handle was removed, but I will be using it for a rear sight at least until end of year. Therefore I will to sigh it in this saturday.

  • Were you a Cavalry Scout? I noticed the spurs hanging on the wall :D

  • I really love the fact that you go by Army standards, Im watching this video along with my dad's old SMCT (soldiers manual of common tasks from 1994) Field manual that ive been studying and it's straight on, i will also be enlisting in the next year or two so this is great knowledge that will benefit me now and later on, very great tutorial, thank you!

  • This is great, thank you

  • Thanks! Very informative.

  • I saw this gun on call of duty black ops its sooooo cool

  • Great vid!!!!! Thank you

  • A very good instructor! Explains everything in detail, doesn't speak too quickly or slowly. Good job.

  • So the way I understand it is the you can use the target you show here at 200 yards, but the AR will be zeroed for 300?

  • @TheHobbyistChannel

The small and large apertures are NOT on the same axis, so zeroing your small aperture at a certain distance will not result in the same zero for the large aperture.

If you zero your SMALL aperture at 25M/300M, the LARGE one will automatically be zeroed at 200M. That's how the sights are designed.

Use the target shown to sight in the small aperture at 25M and the large one should have a 200M zero.

    Hope this helps

  • Excellent

    Thanks

  • starting at 5:10 the front sight is being mooved counterclocwise to bring up, while the arrow on the front sight indicates clockwise for up; confusing! anybody able to clarify?

  • @dreior If the front sight physically moves up, the point of impact moves down. The arrow represents what will happen to the point of impact, NOT the sight post.

  • Great information however, just for clarification, when you use the M4 25m target to sight in the AR15 to mechanical zero which aperture do you use. In your video you switch to the large aperture right before you talk about the target. But you do not specifically say which aperture to use when shooting at the target.

  • I went to a rifle workshop at a gun show and thet showed how to zero in with only 2 shots, just by shooting and placing the scope reticle on the hit and repeating until accurate...dunno if anyone else does this but it works for me

  • what is the size of the squares to have the zero?

  • Fantastic Video. You really helped me out man! Thank you

  • Great video; very informative and easy to follow. I am helping some friends new to shooting, and this was just what we needed!

  • Good video

  • Thank you for this video. I'm sighting in my new Sig516 AR today and this was very helpful

  • That was excellent!

  • Great video. Can the rear sight elevation be used without adjusting the front?

  • I just started rifle shooting so forgive me if this is a dumb question. Just so I understand the 25m zero target correctly, if I zero at 25m my rifle will also be zeroed at 300m? And is this because at 25m the bullet is still climbing through my sight plane while at 300m it is diving through the same sight plane?

  • Good vid. man, thanks.

  • @DAN46404 Thanks for watching & the compliments.

    :)

  • @SafeArmsReview

For 6-inch barrel what will be the initial zeroing distance? shall I divide the 6 with 20 the full lenght M16 barrel then divide the quotient with 25 meters? thank you.

  • @SafeArmsReview how do you take off the carrying handle on the ar 15? or do you already have a video on that? and if so please link it plz :) thank you.

  • the DPMS vid says to go to 6/3 then move one click or to the "z" . can you elaborate on this. thanks

  • Great Video! I recently purchased a DPMS flattop and got some UTG fold down sight and had no idea how to zero them until now. Thanks for all the help. Keep the videos coming.

By the way, the card splitting video was fun to watch also...

  • this was really imformative

  • Just purchased a Stag. After watching your video took it to the range, got it sighted in fairly quickly. Thanks a very good and informative video.

  • I recently built an ar15 and the knob on the rear sight has an 8/3 on it after i sight it in do i have to worry about adjusting that knob any furthur

  • I recently built an ar15 and the knob on the rear sight has an 8/3 on it after i sight it in do i have to worry about adjusting that knob any furthur

  • Great and helpful video very explanitory. I greatly apreciate you taking the time to help others such as myself that know little or nothing about zeroing sights or optics.Once again Thank You.

  • how would i adjust the sight to shoot say.... 75 yards?? i will probly never use my rifle at more than 100 yards.

  • Thanks bud thats a great vid..

  • this is one of the best educational videos on youtube. Awesome

  • You need a boom mic brother.

  • @farmlovingmemories or a lav mic.

  • great video

  • Thank you, great video. You gave me just the information I was looking for, and hearing it from someone who was in the military is a definite plus! I just put together my own AR and wanted to know how the sights were supposed to work. Now I just need to drag it out to the range.

  • Hi should I do this with .223 Or can I use the cmmg .22 at my indoor range.

like you I have a Stag Arms M2

  • why would you zero with the large apeture? at 7:00 that dosent make sense

  • @SafeArmsReview great video steve felt like i was back in basic listening to my drill instructor then after yelling out that my rifle was zeroed in i realized im at home lol again great vid and salutes from fort drum peace

  • do you really have to adjust windage at 25 meters?

  • @Crayons64 remember the target is placed at 25m but it simulate what you would see at 300m out, so yes you have to adjust the windage. If your off at 25 you will be even more off the farther the distance.

    :)

  • @SafeArmsReview at 11:19 in the vid, the green box says it is accurate from 20ft to 300ft. But this comment here says the 25m target simulates accuracy at 300m. So my question is did you mean the gun is accurate 20ft to 300m? If not, what changes are necessary to make it accurate to 300? I know it may sound like a dumb question but I am new to shooting and had a friend zero my rifle and thought I should know how to do it myself. Thank you very much for your time.

  • @kyokushin1 If you check the description box you will links to videos where I split playing cards at distances from 20ft to 300ft using this method of zeroing. Sorry for the confusion.

If you zero using the 25m target you rig will be set for targets up to 300.

    I hope this helps.

    :)

  • What carry handle is that??

    And is it mil spec?

  • @mrmidnight32 Its a mil spec Stag Arms model 2.

    :)

  • I guess you don't know that the large and small hole aperatures are not on the same plane. When you zero at 300 meters with small ap when you flip down to 0-2 ap it changes zero.

  • This video is full of FAIL dont zero your rifle this way watch the video response for proper instruction..

  • @MrLongbranch303 Hmmm... full of fail? Really? Seems to me I have heard this recently from another person? You sound just like that guy. Hmmm...

This is how I zeroed my rig and its accurate to the point where I can split playing cards from 20 feet & out to 300 feet away. Check out these vids = my proof.

    watch?v=TAIqp0TcbUM

    watch?v=gmPJ0xaYLFc

    watch?v=i0l0dsIjlg8

    watch?v=LcJJPS_nQo0

If thats failing, then I'm good w/ it. BTW all those shots were done w/ iron sights

    ;)

  • @semiautoriflelover Sorry semiautoriflelover, you have made your decision andI hope you find more helpful information elsewhere.

    ;)

  • @semiautoriflelover Again you ignore my comments & the purpose for posting this video. I NEVER said I disliked your response/s or ANY alternative method. BTW I do see the benefits of this 'alternative method' & it is useful.

My problem is IF you keep misrepresenting the truth (implying I am a liar claiming I said things I clearly did not), then I will have to ask you to leave, regardless of whether a technique or procedure works or not.

    The decision is yours.

    ;)

  • I have a stupid question, lets say you sight in your rifle prone at 300 yards 20 inch ar 1:9twist and lets just say idk a 62 grain bullet goin 3100fps-3200fps. When you go from prone to crouching then to standing how much does your poa/poi change? I can not find any information about it anywhere online. Hope someone can help thanks.

  • @GUNS4MIKE1234 If you have change the way you hold the firearm or change the fundamentals (grip, position, breath control, sight alignment, trigger pull, follow thru, cheek to stock, grip, sight picture, breathing, changing hand positions, etc) between rounds then your point of impact will change even if your in the same position.

If you can maintain the same fundamentals with all three positions then you will hit the target in each position.

    :)

  • i don't know if this is correct, but the manual for my AR says to set the elevation to the little "z" next to the 6/3 mark for mechanical zero. but in the video u set it on the 6/3 mark? is this better?

  • Hey steve. im getting ready to pull the scope off my flattop AR and was wondering what detach handle you are running and what your thoughts are on it. im looking for my first set of irons on this gun.

and thanks for this video its gonna help alot

  • is it illegal to have a moveable stock in new york when i bought my m4 they drilled these little pins in my butt stock so it wont move now?? any one know???

  • @codcoda Check your local laws & perhaps with a local gun store as they usually have a better idea about this.

I can't comment for certain because I am not familiar with NY laws.

    :)

  • @SafeArmsReview ight bro cool good lookin out i gotta look more into it thanks!!!

  • @codcoda Yes it is illegal to have a Adjustable/Folding stock in the state of NY. You also can only have a 10 round magazines too unless you get pre-ban magazines, that are quite expensive..

  • @Thirsty4stalin thanks man ya i looked it up you can only have it if your gun was made befor 96 witch is stupid if i knew that when i bought it i would of neva got it! haha thanks again bro
