I was at this show. it was the first of many dregs/morse shows i would see.got hooked on listening to their music. i remember at some point during the show they used flash smoke which quickly filled the place with smoke, that part of the show sucked; coughing and couldn,t see for a few minutes.
It's nice that you have old video footage of the Dixie Dregs but the music you posted with it is nowhere even closely related. I would encourage anyone who wants to hear great music to do a You Tube search of the Dixie Dregs, and hear the real thing, the music you have to posted with the video is like comparing John Coltrane to Kenny G.
I've written this before, but I'll do it again. Youtube would not allow the studio version of the song "Odyssey" which was perfect in terms of length. I should instead have used a live recording that isn't on the list of copyrighted music by DD. But, I was forced by Youtube to select the crappy music that is now permanently sealed in this clip. I tried to change it, but it's not possible. I've tried to even reload it, but that didn't work either.
Ever heard of comparing apples and oranges? That's what you're doing. And who really cares anyway...the Dregs have disbanded. No one in Linkin Park has anywhere near the musical talent of any of the members of the Dixie Dregs...and they're not an instrumental group anyway.
@xxxLinkinPark1998xxx HAHAHAHAHAHA Brand New Sin is better than Linkin Park, ThrowDown is better than L.P, Steve Morse Band in the side bar over here is better than L.P.
someone should try to dub the real audio from this show with the video. the live recording is available and has been in trading circles for years. i have it.
I was there that night. Wow!! thank you ultomatt for sharing. I attended many Dregs and Steve concerts but this one was astounding. I was born and raised in LA. Very accustomed to great talent. This night blew it all away. Maybe a weird comparison but in my life experience only Hot August night at the Greek could compare. Steve was on fire.
Thanks to my shitty fukin broadband connection that I pay too much for, I have loads of time to practice typing meaningless diatribe so as not to become a psychopath.
All I want to see is this clip; is that too much? Anyone else have shitty service and they tell you the towers are too busy? If true, cell users would mail dog shit to them with the Hershey's logo printed on the front. Oh! video time:)
Ahh good ol' celuloid.Somehow video just doesnt capture the moment sometime. Please try to re-upload with a Dregs song.If one wont work try another it'll go through eventually.
YouTube won't allow external changes of audio, only internal to YouTube, i.e. I can pick from their list (which not coincidentally is LAME). To change the audio to what I'd like, I'll have to upload the video and choose the music then. I have a track in mind that they shouldn't be able to do a comparative on since it's a live song from a, shall we say, less than official source. I'll try tomorrow and see if they ace me out. It's bugged me having that other (unrelated) music playing!
We were there! Right Animal? ... It just didn't quite sound like this - - right, Mr, Morgenstern? Loved lunch at NAMM . Thanks for posting this ultomatt.
I tried to put their song "Odyssey" in as the music, but YouTube wouldn't allow it...copyright infringement. What you hear is one of the tunes that YouTube would allow.
My first Live Dregs experience was a few nights before this, at Coconut Grove in Santa Cruz, Ca. Changed the life of a then 18 year old guitar playing pothead. Renewed focus, discipline, inspiration, and faith that hard work pays off in amazing ways. Thank you to Steve Morse!!!
Actually, the 8mm Kodak is very interesting and creates a better film look than digital video IMHO. Saw them in '79 also, but in New Jersey. Your video brings back great memories.
I have some stills of Holdsworth that I took in 2000, but no 8mm film. The only other concerts I took the movie camera to were Procol Harum at the Hollywood Bowl on Sept. 21, 1973 and Todd Rundgren at The Roxy Theater in 1978. The Procol film is all shot from about halfway back at the Hollywood Bowl, so it's all distant footage. Todd however, was front row...but as I recall the film was pretty shaky...that's one I never digitized.
Yeah, I agree. That was my first thought when I clicked on this -- "cool, film!"
BTW, if you like film you'll probably like the famous Talking Heads concert, Stop Making Sense, which was shot by Jonathon Deming on film. It's beautiful to look at and of course the music is good too (assuming you like Talking Heads).
If you search under Talking Heads Once In A Lifetime iti'll come up.
I saw the Dregs at the Roxy, I'm just not sure if it was this show or not. All of the great fusions bands played their and I was most fortunate to see quite a few of them. Thanks.
I love the dregs. I found out about them through a Steve Morse CD. And the track odyssey through the cover on Dream Theraters new album. Amazing piece of music. However, this classical is pretty good as well. Reminds me of the classical sections on a Symphony X album. LOVE IS NOT MUSIC. MUSIC IS THE BEST!
At 5:40 into this movie clip, there is a single frame of film that caught Steve Morse, and his Frankenstein Tele/Strat guitar, in silhouette as the flash pots on the stage went off. Amazing that I caught it...and it's hard to isolate, but if you try, you'll see a pretty cool frame.
Methinks that I was at this show...
We had a table at the front row- this was when the Roxy still had waitresses to bring your drinks.
My friend was in the mens' room, and standing at the urinal next him was Stanley Clarke.
He almost pissed on Stanley!
I was 17 then- so much has changed!

This is stupid. Take this video down. It's an insult to the Dregs. there's plenty of Dregs music out there that you could've added as the soundtrack.
