if the notebook can be a great popular classic, i really wonder why this film can not. This movie is absolutely fascinating, the plot, the ppl, the scene etc
i am crazy about this film.. the cast and crew should know that they did the best job! it is one of those hard-to-find intelligent films.. a real treasure! congrats, everybody! btw, i did a blog on this film at fisherbouy.blogspot.com :) see u there!
A wonderful interview! It makes me homesick. Love, cute language coloured by our marvelous classic music "Mei Hua San Nong"(Three Tunes in Plum Blossom)
I saw the film several years ago and immediately fell in love with it. Edward Norton is such a wonderful wonderful actor, a real artist. The film could not be so touching without him. How nice I could find the interview in a foreign country and my heart cannot stop aching. When can I go home?

I saw the film several years ago and immediately fell in love with it. Edward Norton is a wonderful wonderful actor, a real artist. The film could not be so touching without him. How nice I could find the interview in a foreign country and my heart cannot stop aching……
I love this movie (but the end of it is so sad - it always makes my cry...). Edward Norton is a great actor - he can play everything. 5 Stars for this movie :)
I just watched this film yesterday. And boy what a film! I couldn't stop thinking about it all day. It was so beautiful and sad at the same time. And once again Edward Norton's performance was not only 100% believable, but mesmerizing and emotionally infectious as well. I just love him! Hands down best actor of his generation! How an outstanding actor like Ed Norton hasn't won any Oscars is seriously beyond me!
I haven't managed to find a copy of the book yet (I'm still looking at used bookstores), but chances are, you're right. Every element of this movie is flawless - script, casting, direction, the scenery and set design, et cetera - and it's extremely rare for me to feel that way.
It is a film for intelligent people who can appreciate human relationships.
This is a wonderful film, but sadly was never the huge blockbuster it should have been. But that is nothing to do with the film, and is everything to do with how many people have become shallow, and need their senses blasted by sex and/or violence.
The film should have swept up several Oscars. Brilliant music, cinemaphotography, and acting.
I think one of the reasons why Norton usually picks good projects to work on is that he deeply understands scripts, and also seems to avoid shallow endings. I love that and I'd really like to agree with all he said in this interview, but here's how I see it:
1. In the movie, Chinese were dying because their leaders accepted the epidemic as fate and also because the village people were so attached to their traditions that they insisted in polluting their own water. The English doctor saves them.
Wow, I really like your observations Lynx. I never saw it that way. I have to admit though, that I was glad that Edward's character got angry with her but yet forgave her. I didn't see it quite the way you did.
Thanks! I was glad that he forgave her, too. I think the process could have been less traumatic; he punished her (and himself as well, for "being the fool that fell for her") too hard, but maybe that's what the film is about. I still would like to agree with the idea that it was not their fault though. =(
Meanwhile, the Chinese guard put at Kitty's door can barely articulate, just follows her around like a dog. So, in the big picture, and in despite of what one character alone may say, the story isn't really telling you that foreigners shouldn't interfere in China's (or maybe other countries') affairs - it's telling you that the habitants of that village (or maybe other villages) were primitive, superstitious stubborn people, who should be thankful for being able to benefit from any help at all.
2. If you pay attention to what Walter and Kitty "have learnt" throughout the story, it tells you clearly what they were doing wrong and how they should behave instead, as if saying "this is how a woman should be: shy, humble and romantic, not selfish and mundane like she was in the beginning; this is how a man should be: bold, dominant and less emotionally available, not a clumsy wimp like he was in the beginning".
So the story is not just telling you that it's human to see things as we'd like them to be - it's telling you that the characters were socially unacceptable because they were playing inverted roles. Which is pretty retrograde even if the plot is set in the 1920's (such messages can be updated). At least he forgave her... but, right after that, what happens?
Don't get me wrong, I think it's a good movie (even if it wasn't, there's one particular shot in it that could save the whole film, haha).
The Painted Veil is my absolute favourite film <3 I became a fan of the 1920's after I first watched it. Naomi was amazing - AMAZING - here, and Edward was sublime. WONDERFUL movie.
Such a great actor...so darn talented.I have loved to have seen him in Burn This just to see if he could pull off a great act on stage...I bet ya he could hi hi!
Perfect settlement of place ( china ), perfect cast , the story & perfect combination of Edward Norton & Naomi Watts . I love this movie one of the best i've seen.
"period story" means a love story set in the past, a certain time in history, this one in the 1920's. Look up period dramas on youtube, it will help you understand. Hope it helps : )
I always get a kick when seeing Edward Norton do an interview. It shows he really thinks about every role he plays, and gets so immersed into the character that he delivers a brilliant performance every time. Edward is just amazing!!
It just shows that it doesn't have to end "happily ever after" to make a great love story. Nobody else would've played Kitty and Walter better. Especially Norton, he just fit the character so well because there's something about so that's so mysterious, like he's holding something back, just like Walter.
this moovie was extraordinary , i am sad that i postpones so much seeing it , everybody was recommending it to me and i didnt wanted to see it , after i watched it i realized that now is one of my favourites films , i also sad that it has a bad end , but in live this happends all the time and death is part of our life
is a very extraordinary story and is worthed to be seen by many people from these world and thinking better at this novel like a part of everyone's life....congradulations
Dear Mr. Caplan: This is a remarkable piece....and if they want to sell more DVDs of this incredible film, they need to use your interview as an "extra" feature. I was very disappointed that the DVD was without one. Thanks for sharing this on YouTube!
Wow, selling it to them would be nice - it'd help pay for my newborn son and the 5-day hospital bill for my wife. Can someone get Ed Norton on the phone? I thank you for your kind comments. -zen
People buying DVDs look for "extras" in the DVD jacket when picking it up in the stores, and producers see this as an extra bonus which can tip the scale when buyers are considering buying the title.
So you should definitely look at the opportunity of selling interview material to producers.
Me too. I was so disappointed that the DVD didn't have any special features! This was a great interview, I'm sure many more DVDs would be sold if it was included.
Thank you, Norton was a genuinely nice person, and afterwards shook my hand and complimented my interview with him. I was blown away at the opportunity to speak to him. -zen

it´s a remake -(1934) the painted veil- with greta garbo
ilovejosephroth 3 years ago
We know. But the 1934 version is dreadful.
The director and crew deliberately did NOT view the original movie before making this.
It is, for all intents and purpose, a completely new movie based on the novel, not a remake of a rather campy Garbo film.

LMFAO @ ''the 1934 version is dreadful''. I'm going to check it out one day but I doubt it has the searing heat of the Painted Veil.
