Hey Leo, Love the show!!! When you were taking about Porsche's system going into the R18, I looked it up, totally possible!!! Here is the new rule for 2011
Art 1.13 covers all the details of the hybrid systems. 4-wheel drive is now allowed through the use of a hybrid system, assuming the two rear wheels are driven by the engine and the two fronts are driven by the hybrid system.
I would LOVE to see that too, I think that motorsports should be about technoligy, So its looking good for 2011+
oh also, F-ducts are Not allowed... F-Ducts are illegal:
1.5.4 – Any system operated automatically and/or controlled by the driver to modify the airflow on the rear wing when the car is in motion is forbidden. MERRY CHRISTMAS!!
Great episode, one thing though. The R18 has equal sized tires front and rear, however the front tires are specifically designed as front placement tires. Unlike the Acura prototype which went with actual rear tires on the front. Prototype rear tires have specific design characteristics which make them resistant to directional changes (what you want with rear tires).

Well I think it's a little bit of both, each company gets the accolades for winning LeMans outright and from all indications, the express purpose for the existence of this car is to win LeMans. WHY LIMIT THE CYLINDER COUNT IN F1?? If lower fuel comsumption is the goal, then make that the limit: the fuel consumption. If fewer emissions are the goal, then make that the limit: the emissions. By regulating and mandating the MEANS to reach their goals, the F1 is being INCREDIBLY counterproductive to exploring and testing new technologies that could be better than these overtly complex four cylinder engines. Who knows what we would see? But now we will never know. Way to regulate progress...
Leo- you have definately come a long way since your first few episodes. You have clearly immerssed yourself in racing, and I can tip my hat to that.
Regarding new F1 engines; I had the same knee-jerk reaction to the decision to go to 4 cylinders as I'm sure everyone did, but the reality is that the current engines have been maxxed out- new rules with less regulation on the engines (and more on aerodynamics) will hopefully develop technology that can be used on the street again.
ok tom walkinshaw was one of the worst thing in australian racing the holden or for the american viewer (aussie gm made car) racing team was nearly forced out of the sport of v8 supercars because of his incompetance to be a good race team owner he im not glad that tom has passed but i am glad he is out of motor racing in australia

Great show Leo. I rarely comment but you kept this shakedown clear and to the point. I do recommend changing the background graphic you guys use on the green screen..it's repetitive and I feel like I'm looking at a Magic Eye book from when I was 10. My .02 cents.

I think I will be behind Team Lotus and Not Lotus Renault GP. LRGP is essentially Bahar finding a way for someone to buy him into the sport with a Team that is one of the front teams in the Mid-pack and the Lotus name attached to that doesn't mean Lotus Engineering, at least not for 2011. Whereas Team Lotus will have to climb the ranks and any successes they have will be much more well deserved even though they are just licencing the Lotus name. However they do have Colin's son Clive's blessing.
@Ji99i3 : The John Player Special colors are legendary for Lotus as well. BRG is a beautiful color, and goes back to 1903. Check Wikipedia for details on how the color was chosen. Interesting information.
Leo, you forgot about the Ducati 999 ... your pacing is great ... 1.6L turbos could be brilliant based on what we saw in the 80's. Introduce a Group C style fuel efficiency formula? ... I remember the ELF guys mixing F1 fuel in hazmat suits ... the John Player colors are great, nice throwback to Andretti ... rear tires on front of Audi? Sounds like a page from Acura's ARX-02 LMP ... The new Audi reminds me of Ross Brawn's XJR-14 from Group-C and GTP in the early 90s, a TWR project.

Another little factoid... I agree the Silk Cut colors were much prettier, and the XJR-14 chassis went on to become the Porsche WSC95 that won Le Mans two years running. Says a lot for the design of the car as it spanned two eras at Le Mans with great success.
Leo, first off great show, just wondering what are some of the differences between an LMP1 like that R18 and an F1 other than some freedom in set-ups as far as engines ect.
@eheis5 : Leo will know more about this but an LMP is, at its roots, a sports car with room for two seats. Both chassis are carbon tubs, but an F1 is built on a clean slate with every team designing their own car. LMP's are customer chassis from Lola, DAMS, Zytek, etc. When Toyota developed their F1 car they did so with a chassis running TS010 bodywork. Ultimately it comes down to suspension geometry, chassis design principles. Check out mulsannescorner . com for in-depth info.

@qak89 : Problem with two Lotus teams is more a question of branding for Lotus itself. If the unofficial team does poorly it can hurt the brand, if they upstage they factory it can hurt the brand... plus, Lotus the brand has no control over the actions and words of the other team. You don't know what they might do that will cause a PR nightmare. Imagine another team calling itself McLaren or Ferrari. That is the main concern. Red Bull owns both RBR and STR, for them it is less of a concern.
@g00sampson i've sopken as plain F1 viewer, but you're right for the lotus group it might be a problem, a PR nightymare, is posible unlikely thought. And if sb named his team Ferrari or McLaren, he would pay bilion dollar fine for vilolatnig trademarks, lotus team kept the name, cos lotus group sold them license to use it, so whoose fault is it?
but as you said it can be a problem, especialy when lotus is trying to launch so many new models, in the next few years, i aware of that
@qak89 : Ferrari and McLaren were just examples, but good point that the naming rights were sold to Team Lotus. The name for the F1 team was not owned and sold to them by Group Lotus though, so it was not their decision when the name was sold. The car company and team name were purchased and owned independently, which is what lead to this whole situation.
@qak89 The OTHER thing I took away form my Lotus talks was that the Renault decision was because they "want to be up front now". So, much for being nice to the current team!
@LeoParente : Will Lotus be the chassis designer of record (at least in name) while Renault is the power supply of record? It is odd having two car companies brand the same team... but their desire to be up front off the bat makes sense.

It could be a desire to optimize mechanical grip over aerodynamic grip, but this type of design can lead to major balance issues where the front end has too much grip and you cannot tune enough grip into the rear. Search YouTube for Acura ARX-02a for some info and also Google mulsannescorner for some design theory. Great question, can you report back what you find?
@sid203 : Good question. Their LMP2 program only lasted 2 years (or was it 1?) and didn't amount to much with their link-up with Penske. I am a bit disappointed to see them absent as well. We need a next generation 956 / 962 now that the regulations have moved back to a closed roof.

I think the Renault Lotus GP cars will be called 'Renaults', so technically there is only one 'Lotus' team on the grid in 2011. As for the colours; Lotus Racing should have resurrected the Black & Gold in 2010, unfortunately it's too late for them to claim the livery now. As I remember; they were proud of their british racing green last year.

its would only make sense for audi to make the R18 a Quattro, with those wide tires up front, and wouldn't make racing seem like a cleaner sport if they continue to adopt such tech into as many cars as possible and into the road cars that they produce? it seems racing as become more of a testing ground for such things and its used to push them to their limits, including any bugs that may need working out.
@amigodemoose : Everything is cyclical. Do some research on the history of F1 and you'll learn about the various engine eras. They used to allow any number of cylinders with a specified liter output. It was great to hear V8, V10 and V12 running together! The turbo era originated in the 80s with 1.2L, 4cyl so this is just a return to a previous time. Besides, this just pushes the technology.
Anyone who thinks more revs and more cylinders automatically equal more power, needs to watch again, and open ears to what Leo is saying about the engine technology that will be in play.

Leo, you forgot about the Ducati 999 ... your pacing is great ... 1.6L turbos could be brilliant based on what we saw in the 80's. Introduce a Group C style fuel efficiency formula? ... I remember the ELF guys mixing F1 fuel in hazmat suits ... the John Player colors are great, nice throwback to Andretti ... rear tires on front of Audi? Sounds like a page from Acura's ARX-02 LMP ... The new Audi reminds me of Ross Brawn's XJR-14 from Group-C and GTP in the early 90s, a TWR project.

I often where a hazmat suit when I watch SpeedTV. Yes, to ARX fronts. XJR-14 was awesomer in Silk Cut purple vs Bud Light white. Didn't know Brawn did the car. Cool!

Another little factoid... I agree the Silk Cut colors were much prettier, and the XJR-14 chassis went on to become the Porsche WSC95 that won Le Mans two years running. Says a lot for the design of the car as it spanned two eras at Le Mans with great success.

Leo, first off great show, just wondering what are some of the differences between an LMP1 like that R18 and an F1 other than some freedom in set-ups as far as engines ect.

@eheis5 : Leo will know more about this but an LMP is, at its roots, a sports car with room for two seats. Both chassis are carbon tubs, but an F1 is built on a clean slate with every team designing their own car. LMP's are customer chassis from Lola, DAMS, Zytek, etc. When Toyota developed their F1 car they did so with a chassis running TS010 bodywork. Ultimately it comes down to suspension geometry, chassis design principles. Check out mulsannescorner . com for in-depth info.

i don't mind two lotus teams in F1 as long as they won't have cars in the same colour, and i'm after this lotus team, wich will build the better car, also i like the 2013 F1 regulations, nice green cars, that are fun to drive, i'll vote for this.

@qak89 : Problem with two Lotus teams is more a question of branding for Lotus itself. If the unofficial team does poorly it can hurt the brand, if they upstage they factory it can hurt the brand... plus, Lotus the brand has no control over the actions and words of the other team. You don't know what they might do that will cause a PR nightmare. Imagine another team calling itself McLaren or Ferrari. That is the main concern. Red Bull owns both RBR and STR, for them it is less of a concern.

@g00sampson i've sopken as plain F1 viewer, but you're right for the lotus group it might be a problem, a PR nightymare, is posible unlikely thought. And if sb named his team Ferrari or McLaren, he would pay bilion dollar fine for vilolatnig trademarks, lotus team kept the name, cos lotus group sold them license to use it, so whoose fault is it?
but as you said it can be a problem, especialy when lotus is trying to launch so many new models, in the next few years, i aware of that

@qak89 : Ferrari and McLaren were just examples, but good point that the naming rights were sold to Team Lotus. The name for the F1 team was not owned and sold to them by Group Lotus though, so it was not their decision when the name was sold. The car company and team name were purchased and owned independently, which is what lead to this whole situation.

@Conquerera : Not certain, actually. It could be a desire to optimize mechanical grip over aerodynamic grip, but this type of design can lead to major balance issues where the front end has too much grip and you cannot tune enough grip into the rear. Search YouTube for Acura ARX-02a for some info and also Google mulsannescorner for some design theory. Great question, can you report back what you find?

@sid203 : Good question. Their LMP2 program only lasted 2 years (or was it 1?) and didn't amount to much with their link-up with Penske. I am a bit disappointed to see them absent as well. We need a next generation 956 / 962 now that the regulations have moved back to a closed roof.

@whytyt : F1 ran 1.2 liter, 4-cylinder turbos in the early 80s. This is back when the turbo was a new invention for car racing and they were producing 1200+ HP. Do some YouTube searches, the dyno runs from BMW will blow your mind. I understand your point of view, but doing more with less is the true application of technology. I think the Renault Lotus GP cars will be called 'Renaults', so technically there is only one 'Lotus' team on the grid in 2011. As for the colours; Lotus Racing should have resurrected the Black & Gold in 2010, unfortunately it's too late for them to claim the livery now. As I remember; they were proud of their british racing green last year.
A Quatro Le Mans car would be EPIC!!!

its would only make sense for audi to make the R18 a Quattro, with those wide tires up front, and wouldn't make racing seem like a cleaner sport if they continue to adopt such tech into as many cars as possible and into the road cars that they produce? it seems racing as become more of a testing ground for such things and its used to push them to their limits, including any bugs that may need working out.

@amigodemoose : Everything is cyclical. Do some research on the history of F1 and you'll learn about the various engine eras. They used to allow any number of cylinders with a specified liter output. It was great to hear V8, V10 and V12 running together! The turbo era originated in the 80s with 1.2L, 4cyl so this is just a return to a previous time. Besides, this just pushes the technology.
