this is what i think. i'm only 16 but here goes. the reason it's called baby blue is that it's about his child. blue as a color explains many things. for one, when she flys away into the blue, think about the ocean. it's blue, it's vast. his daughter is going into the outer world. also blue is an ironic color because her blue eyes are happy, yet his eyes are blue from sadness.

We were treated to 'Baby Blue' as the first part of the encore at the Tampa concert Wed night. First time Dave sang it live. That coupled with 'Watchtower' as the last song of the night, as Dave would say, 'Still knocks me off my legs..'
I was there too... He said that is was the 2nd time he played it, but forums online have it as the 1st. It was amazing either way! 'Watchtower' with 'Stairway to Heaven' back into 'Watchtower' was some of the best Dave I've ever heard!
The first time was when he recorded it, it only took one take to record, so that literally was the second time he played it, i was there as well, it was amazing
O.K., this is my take. Initially I thought the obvious, that this song was about Dave's sister or LeRoi. But then I started hearing it as sort of a lullaby with a father singing to his baby daughter. "You will rest your head, your strength wants saving" for that time when you will come of age and "fly away," out of the nest "holding tight to the legs of all your (guardian) angles"....."Goodbye my love"...."Not quite ready to be left, still I know I gave my level best." Maybe he is looking ahead?
dave has said in interviews that his lyrics are all basically the same. bassically the same meaning. thats what i love about him. he gives the same message of love but his music is always changing. true musician right here. loves his music more than anything else(except his family probably).
Dave's lyrics are secondary to the music, he often plays with lyrics or rewrites songs. The chords in the beginning of "baby blue" are very similar to "sister" which is a beautiful song about Dave's late sister Anne, who passed in 1993. "Sister" has only ever been played live, often with Tim Reynolds. I was lucky enough to see the two perform it once, it is a very emotional song for him and he asks for silence whenever he plays it.
Dave and Anne were very close, he was convinced that her heart was in his body and his heart in hers. In sister he says, "feel you beating in my chest " in baby blue he refers to her as "my one true broken heart." Many of Dave's songs can be interpreted different ways, whether this is about Anne, LeRoi, or his father, is irrelevant. The song is about loss and closure. "Goodbye my love into your blue blue eyes in your blue blue world. You're my baby blue."
While it is a stunningly beautiful tribute to LeRoi, that wasn't what made me cry. It is a sorrowful, soulful, goodbye to those loved; whether it is a goodbye to one passed beyond reach forever, or a goodbye to someone who steps out of reach through will, it is a goodbye that demonstrates a lingering love for the leaving. In my life, death is not what separates me from the things I must leave; this goodbye resonates with me not for its literal intent, but for the powerful sense of loving loss.
I don't think Shake Me Like A Monkey's for LeRoi. Ha. But I'm not sure if this song is about Roi, I'm honestly thinkin' it is about his son and being on tour (reading more into it than just the title of the song). I could be wrong. Even so Roi was part of DMB from the start and should be an impact on every one of those members.

This song is so overwhelming. It kinda makes me sad. Dave Matthews has a special way of making his songs have a specific emotion. To let us know how he feels. It's a beautiful talent that no other "Popular" Band like the Jonas Brothers can NOT do. THAT is why DMB is the best!

We were treated to 'Baby Blue' as the first part of the encore at the Tampa concert Wed night. First time Dave sang it live. That coupled with 'Watchtower' as the last song of the night, as Dave would say, 'Still knocks me off my legs..'

I was there too... He said that is was the 2nd time he played it, but forums online have it as the 1st. It was amazing either way! 'Watchtower' with 'Stairway to Heaven' back into 'Watchtower' was some of the best Dave I've ever heard!

Dave walked out solo and said "I'm gonna try something. I've only played this song one other time, and that was lucky. This is number two."
I think number one was on 'Big Whiskey.' I think Tampa was the first time live. I've not seen it on any earlier setlists,

The first time was when he recorded it, it only took one take to record, so that literally was the second time he played it, i was there as well, it was amazing

O.K., this is my take. Initially I thought the obvious, that this song was about Dave's sister or LeRoi. But then I started hearing it as sort of a lullaby with a father singing to his baby daughter. "You will rest your head, your strength wants saving" for that time when you will come of age and "fly away," out of the nest "holding tight to the legs of all your (guardian) angles"....."Goodbye my love"...."Not quite ready to be left, still I know I gave my level best." Maybe he is looking ahead?

dave has said in interviews that his lyrics are all basically the same. bassically the same meaning. thats what i love about him. he gives the same message of love but his music is always changing. true musician right here. loves his music more than anything else(except his family probably).

Dave's lyrics are secondary to the music, he often plays with lyrics or rewrites songs. The chords in the beginning of "baby blue" are very similar to "sister" which is a beautiful song about Dave's late sister Anne, who passed in 1993. "Sister" has only ever been played live, often with Tim Reynolds. I was lucky enough to see the two perform it once, it is a very emotional song for him and he asks for silence whenever he plays it.

Dave and Anne were very close, he was convinced that her heart was in his body and his heart in hers. In sister he says, "feel you beating in my chest " in baby blue he refers to her as "my one true broken heart." Many of Dave's songs can be interpreted different ways, whether this is about Anne, LeRoi, or his father, is irrelevant. The song is about loss and closure. "Goodbye my love into your blue blue eyes in your blue blue world. You're my baby blue."

While it is a stunningly beautiful tribute to LeRoi, that wasn't what made me cry. It is a sorrowful, soulful, goodbye to those loved; whether it is a goodbye to one passed beyond reach forever, or a goodbye to someone who steps out of reach through will, it is a goodbye that demonstrates a lingering love for the leaving. In my life, death is not what separates me from the things I must leave; this goodbye resonates with me not for its literal intent, but for the powerful sense of loving loss.

I don't think Shake Me Like A Monkey's for LeRoi. Ha. But I'm not sure if this song is about Roi, I'm honestly thinkin' it is about his son and being on tour (reading more into it than just the title of the song). I could be wrong. Even so Roi was part of DMB from the start and should be an impact on every one of those members.
