  • not incredible, the next.

  • Amazing talent. Superb.

  • best cover of this song i´ve ever heard...

great performance, man if you ever come to vienna, i´ll be at your concert!

  • Thanks so much for sharing this. I had the pleasure of interviewing Darrell several years ago for a show that I produce for Montana Public Radio, and he's a great guy to talk with as well as simply first rate as a musician. He's simply not to be messed with, musically speaking....

  • Not the first time he's played that song. Awesome!

  • This man is amazing. Glad he's getting a wider audience through Robert Plant's Band of Joy. . . .

  • wow. Thanks for the introduction. Hopes he makes it out my way some time.

Who are the 3 morons that don't get it?

  • Yes, he makes it his own. That's what great artists do, and he is truly great. Ask Robert Plant why he chose Darrell to be in his Band of Joy.

  • Truly this is not just another remake of the old tune. Darrell fully understans it and makes it addictive. I can't stop listening to this version... Keep up the good work!

  • Absolutely f*$#ing brilliant!

  • So it's not like Paul Simon's version--so what? Scott has a great voice, and is a wonderful guitar player, so his version is not only valid, it's good!

Who would want to hear only one version of a song their whole life? Get real.

  • This is amazing. One song professional song writer that has the voice to go with it. Outstanding guitar skills.

  • i like the twist in this tune but it lack the sincerity that is potrayed by paul Simon but i like the guitar work.....

  • Excellent rendition of this tune. I do believe that the top of his Taylor is warped though.. doesn't look right.

  • better not hit that replay button then....

  • @passinItOn >> what's so great about cross picking....capo<<

Seems like you missed the memo. Most of the time, people listen to something and decide whether they like it. They don't get a spec sheet and say "oh...cross picking, capo, that one's out on a technicality". If you haven't gathered yet that you can't determine what people want based on a bullet point list of in or out, maybe you missed the boat for 25 years.

  • His guitar playing is pretty cool in this, and his attack is quite sharp. It's not as beautiful and melodic as Paul Simon. All the same it's interesting and playful. I like it. See know this guy could be in his early 50's and that's the difference between his generation and the damn 20 yr olds of today and the garbage they play.

  • Whew! I've been working on this recently, now a whole new perspective to work with. For most of the song it looks like he's using a flat pick but at the end you can see his thumb, no thumb or flat pick.

Can anyone offer further insight into his picking method here? I thought he was flat picking and using fingers for additional melody and harmony notes but now I'm not sure. Is it all fingers? If so why are the thumb and index so tight together for most of the song?

  • @MaabudZ at around 4 mins 4 secs you see him put the pick between his index and middle finger.. :) its very quick but you see it..

  • @thomasmidas You're right! Damn that is slick. Just one more reason to admire his guitar slinging skills.

  • @thomasmidas Does this several times in this tune, that is anytime you're seeing his thumb picking the flatpick is "parked". He also does augment with the pick in that index, middle position but just for effect- not a strong hold. Augments thumb index flat pick hold with fingers- like chicken picking.

  • Beautiful!

  • Yikes. I love that arrangement instrumentally and vocally. There are some really sweet notes he sings. Like "knees" in "...or driven to its knees"; that glissando is awesome. Love it. Thanks for posting.

  • Can't stop listening to this

  • I've listened to this song about 5 times a day. His spin is so emotionally charged. Well done. Nice licks on the guitar too.

  • @SniffaWhiffa Exactly right.

  • If you like what you hear, Post!!! If you don't like what you hear, keep moving... Find something that's down your alley, Don't go crapping on someon'e page just cause you don't like it. Everyone's allowed to like or dislike as is with life, just keep your negativity to yourself... And yes, this is an awesome cover of American Tune!!!

  • Apart from Eva Cassidy's version, I love this one. My only wish is to play like him... Simply Amazing!!

  • This guy is the complete artist. His delivery of this song is incredible.

  • This isn't "his" song, it's by Paul Simon. I don't really care for his interpretation of it either. The song is a lament, it's too fast and the figures are a bit too... "happy"

  • @drakolan I'd imagine a lot of people watching this video feel differently. I've not paid attention to Paul's original version of this until I heard Darrell's. Paul's sounds slow and dead to me - both the tempo and the guitar playing, especially some of the earlier versions with the nylon strings.

It's also not as if Darrell is just a cover singer, either. When a songwriter and musician as prolific as him does a song, I'd imagine someone like Paul sees it as a compliment.

  • The most underrated musician of our time.

  • I agree, he has a stunning voice and is a superb guitarist and when it comes to covers he has the most perfect taste!

  • I agree, he has a stunning voice and is a superb guitarist and when it comes to covers he has the most perfect taste! Such an emotional, exqusitie delivery. x

  • Blackheath Halls this Friday 22/1 - wow !!

  • Darrell's so so good --he reminds me of the GREAT ---JOHN MARTIN

  • This is amazing and the only thing better is seeing him play it live.

  • sweet

  • 5* ..............................

  • thanks Iain Anderson (from BBC Scotland), that I know this signer/songwriter with great voice

try Joan of Arc, it's good too

  • i've had the privilege to play Darrell's Taylor. sadly, I couldn't make the same beautiful sounds he can

  • I'm a huge Paul Simon fan and I don't think even he could do this song as well outside the studio. This is a great interpretation of intent.

  • great voice! reminds me of Jeffrey Foucault . Hope you don't mind the comparison :-) you're in good company!

  • Such brilliance!! An angel walks among us!

  • Man, Im gonna throw my guitar out in the street. Its no use trying. Darrell is just too good!

  • Don't do that! LOL Darrell got that good by not throwing his sweet ass Taylor in the street but rather by holding it close to his heart. We should all aspire to be that good at something. Great Performance once again.

  • lol I feel the same way

  • great song!

  • great job Darrell, love the new record,a must hear, like all DS work
