  • This was one of my first favorite songs back in the 60's when I was just a boy!! It took me years to find it again. Great memories.

  • OH I love this song. It's so nice. Makes me long for the good-old days. Thanks for posting with the actual label; I like seeing them, alot of them I have.

  • I REMEMBER BIG HUGH BABY PLAYING THIS ON WFOM-1230-AM IN MARIETTA,GA WHEN I WASA KID-THANX!

  • This is one of the several hundreds of 45's I have covering my walls...I must admit though, after fourty years, it was great hearing it again.

  • Wow I remember listening to this song on KHJ Radio (AM) when I was a little kid living in Santa Monica Ca.

  • MY 45 of this great record looks like THIS one hahahaha

  • This song brings back memories from Gettysburg PA....1966 to be exact....

  • this was the first song i've ever heard by him from my aunt's 45s in the 1970s(she gave me her 45 records in 1985 including this one).like this one thanks for this one.

  • I haven't explored your videos just yet as there are many, but I've been searching for the B-side to this (at least I'm pretty sure that it was this single) "I can hear the rain" .. I can find another version by another group but never Hyland's version. Any help? Thanks :)

  • Tell me this song doesn't take you back to around July of 1966! Where have those 45 years gone to. I recall buying this single for around 79 cents that Summer.

  • Jeff Lynne of ELO ripped this song off with Horace Wimp. Check it out at the 0:45 of Horace Wimp. An exact rip off of the hook.

  • @joewras ELO totally did steal that hook.. but.. which song is better? I kind of want to see ELO cover The Joker Went Wild..

  • Leon Russell has ears like no other. A Freaking Xylophone in 1967. Now, you gonna tell me that Leon made his xylo at home? He did ?!

  • man.. I miss this music, hit's right to the heart. not like the SHIT that they call music nowadays. Songs like this are amazing. memories they do bring back. Music now is just SHIT..they don't even sing anymore. Oh!! bring back this music..Thank you U-Tube for keeping the memories a live

  • Sound like Gary Lewis And The Playboys. Great song.

  • Re: the sounds like Gary Lewis posts-- while some posters already have covered the Snuff Garrett/Leon Russell angle, remember that in many cases, like the now-infamous Phil Spector, and Quincy Jones, and Sir George Martin, the sound itself was the star and to some extent who recorded it was secondary.

  • There was a joy in this music that no longer seems to exist. Too bad for those who didn't grow up with it.

  • Sound track,Evil bay here i go.

  • I remember this song when I too had just turned 14 in the fall of 1967 in Chicago. Indeed this is a cool song. Thanks for the info about Leon Russel on the xylophone.

  • can you hear Leon Russell on the xylophone? ....true story!

  • terrific track..great post

  • what a great song brings back good the good times

  • All these years, I thought this song was done by Gary Lewis and the Playboys. Very similar sound. Great tune. Love it.

  • 3 people like batman

  • TheClam, agreed. I remember it was a round the time I was getting interested in girls. And the underrated aspect of this music is how influential it was, as songs like this definitely impacted me in a positive way making me cognizant that I should treat girls nicely and respectfully being gentlemanly. I can't say it always paid off when younger as a teen--but it sure did later on in my life.

How many songs today that you've heard positively influence guys the same way?

    Bill

  • @salemst I was 14, too. Came out in early Summer of '66. Great summer.

  • This is the oldest 45 i have in my 45 record collection, because it's the FIRST one i ever bought in junior high at the age of 13. lol -I've still got it and it plays great. Thanx for posting :-)

  • This is an oldie but goodie...It brings baqck memories thanks so much....

  • I feel in love with this song when it first came on the air. I had to get this 45 then...,.99 cents

  • I can hear the rain bryan hyland was on the backside of this record and could someone post it.

  • @oldgordo61 I thought I was the only fool who enjoyed record label art. Your statement made me feel good. Capitol Records was interesting; orange RCA labels with RCA going up the side was cool. Warner Bros for awhile had a whole scene of Burbank on the top; Reprise was classy. You're right, far cry from ipods & mp3's -- there is a disconnect. Cd art also was a far cry from album art. If your eyesight was poor forget reading anything in a cd. Some things should not be changed.

  • This is a great tune!!

  • Mega tune!!!!!!

  • I wish someone would put Brian's version of I can hear the rain

  • Thanks for posting this great forgotten oldie. Those so called oldies stations have forgotten a lot of great hits from the 60's and this is one example!

  • I forgot to mention that I grew up in So. Calif. (Lakewood) also,

  • This brings back childhood memories. It came out the same year Batman was on T.V. Hence, the Joker!

  • @harvestave I was going into 4th grade when this came out and liked it for that very reason!

  • Damn I get so sentimental hearing this song. Oh yeah about 5 when it was out. Hanging out with my older bros. Grew up in Sunny S. CA. My bros were always out at the beach or playing in their teenage bands with Fender guitars. And all this music was blasting out by our pool and in the house. My family all loved and played music. I know everything changes and so does life. But damn these were good times. I grew up quick and loved the tunes. This one of them. Thx 4 posting.

  • Anyone here got "When will I know ?" which also belong to him...plz post it up...thanx in advnace.

  • Anyone here got "When will I know ?" which also belong to him...plz post it up...thanx in advnace.

  • Did anybody think (when they heard this) about the Joker from Batman? I did.

  • Brian sounds like "Gary Lewis and the Playboys" because their "musical architects"- producer Tommy "Snuff" Garrett, arranger Leon Russell and composer Bobby Russell were behind this record as well....

  • omg i feel like im at a high school dance, forgot about this song too, love it!

    class of 69

  • Just another great song from the best time of music. Unlike the RAP SHIT they play nowadays, which isn't even music. What a time for great songs and music

  • Leon Russell is playing the xylophone/bells on this recording. What a great piece of R & R trivia. Found under Leon Russell in Wikipedia.

  • I wish some one would upload the song on the other side of this record. The name of it was I Can Hear The Rain, I havent heard it in 40 years and been wanting to.

  • I wish some one would upload the song on the other side of this record. The name of it was I Can Hear The Rain, I havent heard it in 40 years and been wanting to.

  • I wish someone would put the other side of this record on. Name of the song was I Can Hear the Rain. I haven't listen to it in 40 years, and been wanting to.

  • Very very Gary Lewis and the Playboys...sounding!

  • Oh so fun.. we are dancing to this right now.

The Girls at St. Vincent St Mary High.

    Akron ohio.

  • great 60's song, brings back great memories. thanks

  • I wish someone would put Brian's version of TRAGEDY online...Of course, any of his songs are good.........Gotta love him

  • his version of A Million to One is also TOPS!!!!

  • My first "idol"....

  • Always loved this single but never guessed it was by the sealed with a kiss singer Brian Hyland ..good sixties beat!

  • @bluejayday2009

     i was surprised as well....

  • Top tune!!! Very reminicant of My Heart's symphony!!

  • Check out this video and many more at

    The OfficialBrianHyland Youtube Channel.

    Thanks for watching and listening!!

  • Anyone got a Brian Hyland song from 1964 called 'Young Years'?

  • Probably thought it was a Gary Lewis record because Leon Russell arranged this record like he did many GL & the playboys records at that time. (The wonderful 60;s!!!)

  • wow...i always thought this was sung by Gary Lewis and the Playboys.

  • @vmarc7 Me too!

  • @vmarc7 Me too!

  • @vmarc7 I think Gary Lewis did a version of this song

  • Man this song brings me back . I when I first heard it , I didn't catch who the artist was when i was listening to the radio and all of these years I thought that Gary Lewis And The Playboys made this song , cause it sounds so much mike Gary Lewis singign , boy was I fooled !

  • OH, this song is so fun.. We are dancing to it.. The girls at St.Vincent St.Mary Akron Ohio. a lot better than some of todays songs

  • We use to joy ride to this song, crash the drive inn, with 3 guys hiding in the trunk. And B.H. made summer nights a blast.

  • Fab song - we danced to this one in the gym at the sock-hop. Thanks Brian !

  • Fun song!! We can actually sing to it and dance..!!!

  • This is why I love you guys on youtube, You've got the greatest music. I haven't heard this song in way too many years. But I'de bet my sister still has the 45.

  • This song's rel;ease had great timing. I think because of the Batman craze at the time, the song rose up the charts.

  • ....Love everything about this Brian Hyland 1966 pop gem, the terrific vocal, the infectious beat (..."It's got a good beat & you can dance to it", remember, "Rate-A-Record" from Amercian Bandstand). It's a shame you don't hear this one on any oldies radio station, or even on oldies satelite TV music stations.

  • and then my kingdom fell apart....

This is a very good song!

  • bubblegum...love it!

  • Great classic

    Mod 4 Life

  • Tommy "Snuff" Garrett and Leon Russell were also responsible for producing and arranging Gary Lewis & The Playboys' 1965-'66 Liberty recordings, so that's why this somewhat sounds like a "demo" for one of theirs...this was Hyland's "big" hit in the summer of '66.

  • thanks for the video! my mom said something yesterday about a king and a joker and then said "OH! whats that song?" She couldnt sleep last night thinking about it and finally had me look it up....we're listening to it now and its brought her some peace of mind! hahaha

  • Phunkyjunction, you have truly uncovered a golden gem! This Top 20 classic seems to be snubbed by (so-called) oldies stations, yet is fondly recalled by many, including myself. Thanks for helping to keep the good times alive!!! Also, is it me, or does this sound eerily similar to a Gary Lewis & The Playboys single? Many thanks again for sharing!

  • Right on man, I had the record and it looked just like the one here, Thanks for posting this!

  • what a blumin classic!! wigan through and through, love it x

  • Great song!

  • WOW! It's been sooooooooo long since I heard this song. Memories gone wild! Thanks so much for posting this.
