  • Wow, what a great rant "j I hadn't thought of SOPA that way yet, but it makes sense. American history, especially its economic history, is full of companies not trying to just be the best but trying to be the only. With YouTube being free (if you have the technology to access and participate on it) it's intimidating to try to compete with it. I wish good philosophies had the same success...

  • U HAZ A WIFE WELL FUCK!!!!!

  • @17peteclarke You do realize they promote charities of all kinds and they stopped posting so often over the years due to the volume of OTHER things they are doing. And Hank went to Haiti to help with the earthquake relief after it stopped being big news. The Project for Awesome is an annual thing they do. There is more than OMG STOP SOPA on this channel and we forgive you for FTBA (forgetting to be awesome).

  • i went there im from the desert and i can say that place is hotter than the devils ass

  • You condemn this stuff so I guess it would be ok for me to make copies of your brothers books and sell them or get some guys together tour and sell tickets under your names? Libs are such a bunch of hypocrites!

  • @Dano1945 Given your shaky command of English grammar, I sincerely doubt anyone would mistake you for John Green.

  • I like how tired, terrible liberals such as yourself will discuss SOPA but don't go anywhere NEAR subjects such as the possibly imminent war in Iran.

Civil rights being infringed upon on a daily basis and suffering due to disgusting corporate organisations. - "Bleh doesn't effect me."

They're taking away the internet. - "OMG EVERYONE GET HYPED UP ABOUT THIS IT'S REAL SHIT STOP IT STOP IT STOP IT STOP IT."

Listen to some Phil Ochs you sophomoric dullard

  • @17peteclarke If you poked around, you would find that both vlogbrothers do discuss these things. Raincheck your ignorance! :) dftba

  • @NicoleeRaviolee *searches their channel* - Iran - no results that aren't 2 years old

*again searches channel* - War - same result

  • I WAS IN NEW, ORLEANS THE SAME TIME YOU WERE! OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG

  • @bananapop27 Oh my... very cool.

  • Brass bands make EVERYTHING better.

  • If I don't get into my first choice college, I will probably end up going to New Orleans' Tulane University, which is very far away... This video made me feel better about it, though :)

  • Of course. I lived in New Orleans until a few months ago, moved to North Carolina where I was only an hour from Asheville, and then moved back to my hometown in Eastern Oregon which is five hours from the nearest tour stop (Portland). And now I'm leaving the country. One day I will get to see Hank and John in person.

  • @fatzdepenguin it was the same where I live, too (Brighton, also in England, UK) but a few of my friends and me helped to spread the word, it was pretty freakin' cool to be honest.

  • they just give me joy

  • I'm probably just behind on the news, but what did president Obama have to do with it?

  • put what about ACTA???

  • DUDE... NO EDGE...

  • i am endlessly entertained, enthused, and educated by vlogbrothers videos. Theyre so interesting

  • I liked this because it explained most of what was going on humorously and in layman's terms. But I am now scared. I'm scared because in the light of what feels like a huge victory (but may in fact be a comparatively small one) people might become complacent over ACTA. I don't understand ACTA, but I understand that it's coming for Europe. I want the internet to get riled again. It made me feel safe.

  • There's a Footlocker in the French Quarter??? WTF is happening to this world?

  • @MaeNotEast There has been a Footlocker in the French Quarter for as long as i can remember. Its on Canal St, where there are more mainstream stores.

  • Grammar edit: Momentarily means for a short time. Meaning that you will see John for only a moment and then continue on your merry way. The second definition has recently become "in a moment", but it only got put in the dictionary because sometimes people disregard definitions and then things like "inflammable" and "flammable" happen. Also things like "nauseous" and "nauseated", which used to mean two different things as well.

  • I was in New Orleans on a trip literally three days after they left..Sigh. Memphis is always forgotten on things like these.

  • Move to Canada. You and John. Doo itt.

  • good god i miss new orleans. sheesh.

  • you suck this isn't top 10 greatest explosions

  • OMG I HAVE BEEN EVERYWHERE YOU JUST WALKED AND HAVE SEEN A FEW OF THOSE PERFORMERS!!

Yay for New Orleans being metaphorically compared to the internet!!!

  • Wow! Hank can control time and the sun!

  • STFU - press like if you agree

  • Oh my gosh, the internet is like New Orleans? Where's my beignets!?

  • SOPA and PIPA got killed. That day, much WorldSuck was defeated. And then ACTA came along and confused the hell out of us. Help make the world less sucky and explain ACTA to the Nerdfighters? And me?

  • @MorganOfTheAncients As I am likely to be 12 times more confused than you, I second that. I also said likely as I do not know just how confused you are.

  • You walked by the Bienville House! We spent our honeymoon there!

  • @awesomelyizzy oops! Forgot. Thanks.

  • Rich people buy things Poor people steal things.. Thats how the world works now Stfu.

  • wut

  • I was so distracted by the surroundings!

  • Thewolffromhell66666 I live here, its pretty awesome.

  • @VictoriaRosification if u wanna tag someone u need to put an @ sign in front xx

  • im guessing that i am wrong and please correct me if so, but isn't obama trying to pass sopa and acta?

  • @EmoWolfMaster You are correct, he is supporting it very strongly and openly.

  • GAHHHH now what are we gonna do about Bill C-11, EH?!?!?!?!?

  • Like we, the Nerd Fighters, would allow such an abomination as SOPA or PIPA to tread on our rights and freedom? NEVER! Though divided we are but drops of water, together we stand as the tsunami of Nerd Fighters United!

  • I have watched all of them!!!!!!!

    I know everything!

  • The internet is (arguably) the single best invention of the entire modern world. And now our government wants to tell is how to use it. They can't tell us how we can use and access something that lets us share ideas and information. They have no right to censor me when I say fuck them.

  • I like the internet as a street analogy. On any street, many things happen, everything from crime to charity, fun things and boring things, anything that you can imagine. The way justice works in the real world is we arrest the criminals, prove that they are criminals, and punish them accordingly through the court system.

SOPA would not target criminals, it would just put a fence up around the whole block. This would stop legitimate users, but criminals would just hop the fence.

  • i have walked the same path as hank green. my life, its awesomeness just increased substantiously.

  • I want to live in the BIG EASY

  • In Spain they've already passed a similar law for internet censorship due to US Embassy preassure. So... thanks, US!

  • They tried planning some form of internet censorship here in Australia too. I think I mentioned it already in another comment. But I for one am thoroughly against restricting others from their freedoms unless the intent is to harm or kill another.

  • SOPA and PIPA are gonna be one of those things that gets passed around congress so many times, and changes a little bit everytime, until its eventually grounds for passing...

  • How tall is hank?

  • i love the people looking at hank in the backgroud like he is a wierdy

  • @thelittleloud1 I never quite get used to that.

  • honestly whats the difference between youtube and football? Its a form of entertainment. Yes they should be payed for entertaining us. Nfl players and strippers do!

  • AWESOME!! I was born in new orleans and my whole family was!!! I want to go to Tulane!! Sorry for the rambling!! I love street performers!!

    DFTBA!!!!

  • MOMENTARILY means for a moment, for a short amount of time, for a moment. It does not mean SOON! If you were beside me saying that I may have shouted at you. I apologise for the rude tone, but there are things on the internet which ill offend people of average sensibilities.

  • Hank, could you make a song using SAT words? Please.

    Sincerely, a troubled student

  • It's nice that you gave the performers a tip.

  • HANK! I love street performers too! I just watched this vid on youtube of one in downtown Portland and I'm obsessed with it now, it's INCREDIBLE! Type in 'Portland Halo Cover' and you'll find it. Watch it please? I hope you like it! DFTBA

  • That was a great analogy.

  • Amen, brother!

  • I was so sad when i realised that im missing a nerd fighter gathering in my city for the first time in history.

  • I was at that conference!

  • New Orleans is my favorite place in the world. I was freaking out because you were walking by places I have actually been to. :DD

    Sorry for the rambling. heh.

  • 7 days until I get to go to TDN!

  • @OoOImWithCrazyOoO What does TDN stand for? The Damn Nation? Those Defective Noses? Those Dumbass Nudists? The Death Note? Those Darn Needs? Well?

  • @thecommenter401 TDN stands for Tour De Nerdfighting! I admire your amazing initalisms.

  • Do one about ACTA please! I've seen a few things about it and, being in the UK right now while this is a discussion, I really think everyone should know about how it could actually be worse than SOPA and PIPA....

  • new orleans looks beautiful.

  • I love the people's reactions when they walk by Hank seeing him talk to a camera. They just stare.

  • i wonder if hank didt get distracted by the bourbon girls....

you know what im talking about

  • Nobody in Watford (uk) knows what SOPA/ACTA/PIPA its really frustrating

  • To be honest I don't think they were ever going to pass this bill, I think they just want to see how far they can push peoples buttons, but it's wonderful to see everybody speaking out against it.

  • A Question For John.

"you know how you are going about the house in your pajamas? Well, I do that too a lot and I call that 'Jammin.' And this, Is something I wanna ask, will you please start using that phrase? I am trying to start it up."

Hank, that can go for you too.

  • Half of me is going, awh, poor guys were probably tired on Monday, and half of me is going PUNISHMENT. PUNISHMENT. I'll see you guys on Friday!

  • I love the French Quarter. I also love the internet. This is a good video and you should feel good about it.

  • I don't think that the giant media companies are concerned about content creators in the internet. I think they are - as they are saying - concerned about people who steal their stuff.

However, SOPA is not a good way to stop it.

P.S.: A leading man of some giant media coporation critized the internet's protest against SOPA, because it's not constructive. And actually, I have to say that he is right! No one I've listened to has offered a good alternative that would stop online piracy...

  • He thanked Obama.... Why?

  • @ezland100 Because Obama made a point of saying he didn't support SOPA.

  • I just received my copy of TFIOS today!!! :D Denmark is slow and i suck at english xD

  • Help STOP ACTA! POLAND will sign it! please HEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP!

  • Hank please make a video about ACTA too.. it is very important that people know about this law !!!!!!!

  • @0oZzZzZo0 Acta is not a law. It barely does anything actually. (I do strongly oppose sopa and pipa so yeah....)

  • @0oZzZzZo0 ACTA isn't a law, it's a treaty. Jesus, stop blindly following people and read shit.

  • @TheGearsKeepTurning treaty or law, ACTA is still a threat to the internet as we have come to know it. Not to mention, the fact that Obama silently signed it ticks me off.

  • @0oZzZzZo0 what is ACTA?

  • @0oZzZzZo0 sopa and pipa aren't a threat to the internet, pirates laugh at the idea. ACTA is a threat.. in everyway

  • @0oZzZzZo0 Well it's technically not a law, but it is still very important. XD

  • Hello there NerdFighteria, we are some Australian nerd fighters and we wish to spread awesome. Though we do not have many viewers. We are Vlogbrother approved (They subbed to us), so you can trust that we are good. It would mean a great deal to us if you came and checked out our channel. Thank you and DFTBA

  • ... Well, you're also stealing their stuff. :P

  • Except I don't have to wait two years to visit the Internet...

  • It worked! Finally! There's a video on khanacademy that explains this. Check it out!

  • Comment removed

  • wow, I tried to mention the website that explains this. But youtube keeps saying Error, try again. I'm totally being censored. Gross!

  • Comment removed

  • Wow. That was a great metaphor

  • In what sense is the internet anything other than categorically finite?

  • Comment removed

  • People don't need governments to protect them. SOPA was brought down by an unregulated mass of people who came together to fight for the greater good. Do you think that if governments didn't exist we wouldn't put out fires? Of course we would. We don't need to be held captive under the threat of force in order to recognize value, be it of life, liberty or property. Nerdfighteria, YouTube, and the Internet as a whole shows us what people do when they're free - they reduce world suck.

  • Today sucked. And I realized why.

No John or Hank to decrease world Monday suck.

But I'll suffer for now, yall deserve a break.

  • New Orleans is the one place in the world that I want to visit! you're so lucky!! i hope you enjoyed your stay.

  • I was in New Orleans for my winter break and watching this video makes me sad that I missed the Vlog Brothers in the city :(

  • How do I ask questions for Question Tuesday?

  • DON'T YOU GUYS UNDERSTAND?! SOPA was tabled Jan 18, Megaupload shutdown next day by US Gov. They had the power ALL ALONG. They just wanted JUSTIFICATION for things they are already doing.

  • Hey fellow nerdfighters, I'm a senior in high school and have started making vlogs (all too similar to vlogbrothers, but they say imitation is the best form of flattery) due to my senioritis. If you guys could support me with a few views, I'd really appreciate it. Helpful criticism wouldn't be minded either (especially from you, if John or Hank is reading this). Thanks!

  • hugely entertaining on many different levels.

  • Hank and John, I have heard about you guys from other people I follow on YT and knew that you kind of pioneered vlogs on the internet, but I had never seen your videos. Today, I had some time and decided to see what all the long-lasting buzz is about. All I have to say is Thank You! Thanks for showing the world that being smart is a good thing, that liking things that others think is silly is ok, and for generally making the internet content not completely revolve around sneezing pandas! DFTKBA

  • I met a Nerdfighter today. She was quite pleasant.

  • did you know that thinkgeek has a corn dog machine.

  • I went the the New Orleans show last Wednesday and it was FANTASTIC. Thank you John and Hank for being awesome and making a Nerfighter's life complete.:)

  • That awesome moment when all the videos on your list of Recommended videos are by vlogbrothers! =D

  • i was literally 2 hours away from you. 2 FREAKING HOURS!!!! oh i'm so sorry for not going to the show, but my lovely sister did get me a signed copy of TFIOS. So thank you and John for the signatures!

  • I cant wait to see you guys in Albuquerque!!!! only one more day!

  • sopa means soup in portuguese!

  • Guys i found a nerd fighter note in Barnes and nobles in Manhattan I couldn't buy the book so I took the note instead

  • time is such a slut...

  • Can someone show this to the government?!

  • Have you and John looked into the consequences of shocking yourselves so much, btw? I don't want you guys to fry your brains while on tour. Or, you know, any other time.

  • The thing that is very annoying about SOPA and PIPA is that the US government is going to try to regulate the internet which really isn't theirs to regulate. the internet does not belong to any specific country or organization so they should not have the right to organize it.

  • Could you guys look into and raise awareness of ACTA, please? Its basically the EU version of SOPA, been hovering around being all secrety for a few years and now its popping up again in word of mouth which means something new has probably been leaked although I have yet to find out what.

  • I got my first nerdfighter note yesterday. It was glorious.

  • Sparksflyup@gmail.com has not responded to my original email that I sent over a week and a half ago. I have sent another one since then.

I have not started reading TFIOS because I don't know if I have to send it back.

I'd like someone to address what is happening here. This is increasing World Suck

  • The people staring at you as you vlog make me have the giggles.

  • In the future they will be robots!

  • Can you make a video on the Megaupload fiasco please!

  • i learn more from john and hank than i ever will in school.

  • You should really watch Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog on Netflix!

  • SOPA AND PIPA ARE DEAD! WOOHOO!

  • Can I get that whole video on a tshirt? Please?

  • Just got my tfios with a HANKLERFISH!!!! :D :D

  • why are you guys so cool?!?!?!

  • 1:31 man in yellow jacket and girl accompanying him stop walking to stare at the man walking and talking into a camera.. the life of a youtuber <3

  • "Bithnizz?" Lisps XD

  • Oh my gosh! It just got even better!! Your book has just arrived John!! I literally screamed!! I can't believe my day just keeps getting better and better! The only way it could get better, is if even one of you read this! You are such an inspiration John, Hank and the rest of the Nerdfighters, thank you :)

  • John + Hank, I wasn't all too today, but when I have an impulse, I act on it, and I ended up asking a girl in my form, in last lesson "Do you know who the vlogbrothers are?" she then replied yes! I gasped and asked if she was a Nerdfighter in a really excited voice, to which she also replied yes! We high fived, and nobody knew what we were on about XD Neither of us know anybody else who's a nerdfighter and we were so happy! We've both ordered your book John too! Thanks for making my day better!

  • Happy Birthday Henry!

  • will you guys come to canada for a tour

  • Even though I preordered a copy of TFiOS, every time I go to a book store, or any store that has TFiOS I go Hankler fishing and Yeti hunting because they are just so cute and my copy didn't have one.

Also, tomorrow (Tuesday, the 24th) is my 18th birthday! I'm just so excited, I thought I'd share.

  • Awww... Makes me miss NOLA! Hope you had an awesome time in my favorite city!!!

  • saw a nerdfighter wearing a dftba t shirt outside of a pancake house in san antonio... it is pervasive.

  • A TEDtalks video on SOPA, PIPA and all the other crap the media industry has tried to pull: watch?v=9h2dF-IsH0I

  • what about ACTA?

  • Brilliantly executed as usual

  • lol. under the video: "Hank Green: As seen on: John Green"

    Whoa.

  • It's just so weird to have two videos a week, I keep coming back to your channel thinking "weird, my subscription box might be broken again... damn you, youtube" and then I realize it's not broken and I get sad :(

  • but the SOPA and PIPA as it is right now, SHOULD NOT BE PASSED. it doesn't define the lines on what is "freedom of speech" or "facilitating piracy". it can get way out of hand and abused...

  • Nobody complained about people recording shows on their VCR for their own personal use. Downloading is the same principal. Corporations are just butthurt that downloading is more efficient.

  • @cdimitr0v There's a video from TED going around, and it makes sense. The entertainment corps. WANTED the gov't to say that all recording was bad. That is why they have been trying ever since to reverse that law. SOPA and PIPA are just their newest attempts. This is also why they had laws passed that said that entertainment companies could infringe on the capabilities of electronics (as in, your cable service can scramble your DVD recorder.)

People. What a bunch of bastards.

  • @cdimitr0v That's exactly right, that and cassette recording the radio back in the day!

  • the "small businesses" being protected by SOPA and PIPA NOT being passed by the congress are those sites that facilitate piracy, and that sort of business model, quite frankly, is very flawed. if they didn't take profit from it, then it's another issue... they're just a bunch of "outlaws".

avoid invoking terms like "anarchy", etc, etc, because it just conjures up dozens and dozens of idea being clumped together badly and unnecessarily.

  • Where did you go with street performers? I was in the French Quarter on Saturday and all I saw were a bunch of kids falling off skateboards near the river D':

  • Hank, that's the best analogy of the internet EVER! You are so right; one of the 5 fundamental economic questions is "how will an economy adapt to change?" Propping up the old and not using the new creates inefficiency and doesn't meet societies wants and needs. I love you guys to death.

  • I love how I knew everything you showed in Nola ! New Orleans born and reared ;)

  • That "pre-dusk streetlights on still tepid out" Time is definitely my favorite time of day. darn Winter :(

  • @vlogbrothers you need to talk about ACTA its like SOPA but WORSE!!!!!

  • Remember when Hank couldn't do videos with people watching? I guess those days are over...

  • The venue of performance does not put it into the public domain automatically. Especially if the one man band didn't have public performance rights to begin with.

If you recorded the one man band playing his own music, he retains the public performance rights to his own music, regardless of where it was created, and so a post of it on the internet is considered a public performance, which means he would still have to give you permission.

  • @TextOnlySword and thanks :)

  • i wish my school's trombones were that good. :(
