I mean look how nice and clean and tailored thise men are , I hate looking at bands today they looked so dirty and ........I mean it was an event that you dressed for fer cryin out loud
It is sad and amazing but Herbie Mann was often criticized during his day....he was not considered a jazz heavy weight by many....what these "critics" did not get that he was a master flute player and his synthesis of latin styles was brilliant.....he also created a wonderful groove with his playing that would lead to a whole style later on...it is true that there were heavier more soulful players at the time, but Herbie knew how to popularize the music---and he played beautifully.
@513coltrane i Agree with you.Herbie is just amazing & played so many varieties of music & every version was 11O&.Have you heard his version of BAIA?.It is simply so brilliant.I saw him play in Melbourne,Australia in the 70's & relly didn't appreciate him to his full brilliance.
this is timeless and next to perfection. 100 years from now people will listen and love it too. Patato's interpretation on the congas is ageless - I can't see anyone saying oh that's a 50's mambo or 60's cha cha beat - he just makes it his own!
One of my favorite lineups in Herbie's groups of the 60's w/Dave Pike (vibes), Patato Valdes (congas) & Willie Bobo (timbales).. I was a very young man when I saw this group and boy was I impressed.
Great alto flute sound

Wow!
Vintage Herbie on alto-flute. Must have been somewhat rare at
that time. What a nice setup conjunto and check out how elegant they are holding
it down allowing those beautiful low notes to come through.
I hope there's more.
