I took lessons at Bud's Maple Leaf Music store in San Jose when I was around 10 or 11, when I'm sure my lack of dedication was a source of frustration for him. Many years after I gave up lessons, I was at a friend's wedding reception -- around the time this video was made -- where Bud's combo was playing. He was still the same warm and funny "Uncle Bud," and we had a great time reminiscing. His was certainly a life well-lived.
I took lessons from Uncle Bud for about two years when I lived in Phoenix. He and his wife (Judy) were the kindest people in the world. I learned so much about voicing chord changes and harmony. He will be missed. Not only was he a great jazz player but he was a phenominal teacher. I apply his techniques with my students every day.
Wow, two wonderful friends that I miss so much - playing together. Smith was always so supportive, and Bud recorded a single for me at his home studio in 1983. San Jose was blessed by the music of these two local music greats.
I remember this gig, my brother and I used to come out to see Bud play. I learned a lot from Bud back in the '80's about using power tones in ones improvisations and thinking chordally rather than just scales over a key center.

This is neat to find! My grandfather, Ted Collins, had performed with Bud on numerous occasions. Bud is definitely a smooth operator!

Not only was Uncle Bud one helluva jazz guitarist, he was also a gentleman and a fine human being. A great person to have known.

Sadly the great Bud Dimock passed away during the summer of 2007.We will always remember him.
