  • To me this sounds like a mix of Muse, Rage Against The Machine, And a shit ton of acid.

And to that i say, MOARRRRRRRRRRRRRR

  • i'm new to this band, but the guitarist is really something. the guitarist kind of reminds me of Tom Morello from Rage, but with a different style of using effect pedals. nevertheless this is one of my new favorite bands.

  • I was my friends in Burning man, and we smoked waay too much weed. Then to top that off my friend found some LSD and well took it. We laid on the sand and my friend introduced us all to the mars volta by playing this song on his car. This shit was SO FUCKING intense i literally fucking pissed myself from the vibrations.

  • Just killed the replay button ;)

  • Holy FUCK, that drum beat that begins at 1:14 is incredible!

  • actually everyone, the reason they're so awesome is cause their time signatures divide by 0.

    Happy Holidays

  • yall, it's 9 then switches to 6.

  • They...are...awesome...

  • Don't try to count the signatures guys... You'll hurt yourselves!

  • thank you for Omar and Cedric for being alive....

  • It's 4/4, 4/4, 4/4, 5/4. Then some 6/8 or 3/4 in the "never heard a man speak like this man before" bit. My band attempts to cover this so yeah. XD

  • @andthemushrooms123 Your math is correct, but it's easiest felt as "4/4, 4/4, 5/4, 4/4".

  • @theancient74 I don't feel it like that though at all...maybe it's different for everyone depending on how you listen.

  • WHOA. Need this album, right fucking now.

  • how is this a hard time signature to work out?

  • Fuck dis shit wak listen to sum real music like drake or jay-z nigga

  • @joshizdebest420 It'd be best if you take your undeveloped taste of music, and go listen to that inferior stuff

  • @Damnatty Dude..don't be a hipster.

  • @joshizdebest420 obvious troll is trolling

  • @joshizdebest420 HAHA YOUR A FUCKING TWAT! GTFOH!

  • @joshizdebest420 Okay, I'm not even hating on you for your dislike of this music......I'm just curious how the HELL you even GOT here if you look up stuff like Jay-Z and Drake....

    I don't understand.

  • so.. did john frusciante play on this song or what?

  • ok hour and a half of this song on repeat is enough time for aberinkula

  • @Troymiklos

    a) you're wrong

    b) just enjoy the freakin' song!

  • Also, for those wondering, the song is 15/4, 9/8, 2x, and 3/4 during the breakdowns.

  • 6:36

    WHHHHHHAAAAAAATTTTTTTT

  • This song gets me SO FUCKING PUMPED.

Never heard a song as awesome is this one before.

Never heard a song as awesome is this one before.

  • musically this is great, but their producer needs to be shot

  • @Adamboms But the guy that wrote the music is the same guy that produced it D:

  • @dlsNi well we can't shoot him can we? he should hire someone outside the band to help him out a little

  • Is it bad if I hear this and want to go punch people in the face for no reason and scream at them?

Or is that the intended effect?

  • @Flapjackage hell yeah thats how i get XDDD

  • Ohhhhh mannnnnnnnn....

    NO WORDSSSSSSS <3

  • hendrix would shit on omar. hes good. but not that good. hendrix is world famous for a reason. ask ppl if they kno who omar is..

  • @12345678765432130 Popularity has nothing to do with skill or quality.

  • @12345678765432130 hendrix would of most likely appreciated omars music and would have been willing to work with him.

  • @12345678765432130 one of the most ignorant statements ive heard

  • @12345678765432130 Do you have ears? have you ever played the guitar, or know anything? Omar has played some ridiculously complex guitar parts that shit on anything Hendrix could do.

  • @mahavishnuxc Sorry but no one and no thing can shit on Hendrix.

  • @CasperGgoodwood Don't get me wrong, Jimi Hendrix is an insane guitarist and one of my favorite artists of all fucking time. Though in my opinion, Omar is just as good as Hendrix.

  • @CasperGgoodwood When I listen to Hendrix i'm not impressed at all. I like his music, but I don't understand how people class him as the greatest guitarist of all time.

  • @NaeJoy HE INVENT THE GUITAR RIFT. I dont find him that incredible, but just like The Beatles, he paved the way for most of the music we hear today.

  • @NaeJoy Who's a guitarist you ARE impressed by?

  • @12345678765432130 2 different artists from 2 different time periods. When Jimi came around rock and roll was still kind of new (relatively speaking). So were drugs....especially psychotropic drugs. So Jimi had a little help in that aspect. Hell....Jimi's KIND of music was new. These guys are doing it by today's standards......with today's demands. Music has come a long way since Jimi. These guys fucking rock on a TOTALLY different levfel than Jimi. Are they better? It's up to the listener ;)

  • ATTENTION EVERYONE

After much consideration, the youtube community has decided that Omar Rodriguez-Lopez will no longer be referred to by that name. Instead he will now be called, "Jimi Hendrix, jr." or the more formal, "Jimi Hendrix II". That is all.

  • @mahavishnuxc

    Omar Hendrix for short.

But seriously, Omar vs. Hendrix would be cute.

  • @JeremyOrOmega Cute as in "Ha, Hendrix wouldn't stand a chance"?

  • im new to the mars volta but i like it alot, anyone got some song i MUST listen?

  • @EasyRiderRomar the whole albums "frances the mute" and "de-loused in the comatorium"

  • the version on Omar-Rodiriguez Lopez's solo Se_Dice_Bisonte,_No_Búfalo is better

  • if there was a love button i know i would click on it.

  • I get disappointed when I realise this song is about to end.

  • 4:30 sounds like the end to Year of the Boomerang by Rage

  • i like this :D

  • Never heard a man sing like this man before.....

  • such a great headbanging song!!!!!!!!!!!

  • plus this is one of the very few bands I've heard that can really make that high pitched singing sound seriously SICK!

  • @Sublime333X the band Rush does both of those (awesome drumming + incredible high pitch singing), check them out!

  • @SnowyCamel I shall surely do that man :]

  • @Sublime333X check out these songs then: Xanadu (from the album a farewell to kings), freewill (from the album permanent waves) and limelight (from the album moving pictures). Good luck!!

  • @SnowyCamel thanks dude. that should give me somewhere to start :)

  • that drumming just makes my life cooler

  • anyone else hear 21st century schizoid man in this? the guys are huge fans of king crimson so it'd make sense.

  • @renegadexl Mm, I definitely see what you mean.

  • Comment removed

  • @renegadexl if you want to listen to 21'st schizoid, listen to kanye wests newest garbage. it was even on the launch commercial for the newest forza game. he cant even make his own music so he takes random tracks and raps over them

  • @xNirvedXDuckyx whatever man Kanye is the bomb...i mean i love the volta duh...but what Kanye does is magic in the hip hop era he reinvented the soul in hip hop...

  • @xNirvedXDuckyx i just want to say kanye west is great

  • @frusciantefan122 and i respect your opinion but personally, i think he's trash.

  • @xNirvedXDuckyx i respect your opinion too but i really cant see how you think that. dont just base your judgments on people from what you get from the media. he's and incredible producer and uses rock, pop, disco, r&b and fuses it with hip hop. he's pushed forward the genre more than anyone else in the last 7 years. without him hip hop would be bleak.. i recommend his album graduation if you dont listen to him.

  • @frusciantefan122 hip hop IS bleak!

But that's just my opinion. I listen to Porcupine Tree, Tool, The Mars Volta, Opeth, Dream Theater, Protest the Hero, Meshuggah, Pain of Salvation, Disillusion and bands like them. That's exciting music to me - that's why I find hip hop to be extremely bleak, bland and boring.

  • @SamaelTePersigoaTi and 0 fuckes were giving this day.

  • im 12 what is this?

  • @purpleplatapusman music.... music.

  • @purpleplatapusman It's life

  • @purpleplatapusman smoke weed and listen to this it'll make you feel funny

  • people are honestly trying to figure out time signatures for Mars Volta...?

    Good luck.

  • @ElCynical its very easy to hear that this is 4/4....

  • @ElCynical its easy its 4/4 for 2 bars 5/4 for the next then 4/4...i thought that was obvious o.0

  • @ElCynical LOL 4/4 5/4 and 6/8

  • @Oceansandblue

    woot? It's 4/4 + 2/4 + 5/8

  • @boilzxys that makes no sense, but okay bro.

  • @ElCynical

Mars Volta is mostly straight forward 4/4, but fucked up 4/4s

  • @boilzxys How many of their songs have you heard?? They tend to use 6/8 more than 4/4 but use mad stuff like 9/16 and 11/8 in some songs!

  • @ElCynical The entire thing's in 9/8 until the breakdown which is 6/8.

  • what means this song?

  • It's 2 bars of 4/4 then a bar of 5/4 in the verses but a lot of it's in 4/4 with triplets, mmkay? (As far as i can make out; i can play this song on the gee-tar) :)

  • Ok I can see the LIKE button pretty clearly but Where is the LOVE button?

  • why is everyone talking about the time signatures? a lot of modern music I've listened to doesn't even have set time or key signatures. It's all messed up when you try to measure it, so just listen or move on.

  • @shurikencatapult i think they use a pretty much fixed time signature but they use a lot of triplets. triplets are messed up as they are anyway :))

  • @shurikencatapult Yeah they do, it's just more experimental bands change time signatures and use strange rhythms. Keys are often changed, and many bands use different modes too, Mars Volta use a lot of blues scales; all that augmented 4th shizz. If you listen SOAD use middle eastern modes with raised 3rds and lowered 2nd notes...most bands use keys or stick to modes or else it'd sound crap.

  • THE TIME SIGNATURE FOR THIS TUNE IS: FUCK YOU WE DON'T NEED TIME SIGNATURES TO MAKE AWESOME MUSIC.

  • Dat guitar solo

  • this song makes me wanna destroy some shit o.o

  • shit gets intense.

  • i have mini seizure from 2:32 to the end of the song x3 beautiful madness made easy

  • they're siumply masters of music... check out my channel

  • great now how do i remove my dick from the speaker?

  • @kaumithepig You kinda just...pull it out. What were you doing with your dick in the speaker? You should've been listening to The Mars Volta.

  • @kaumithepig A nob of butter

  • @kaumithepig cut it off. its not like you use it anyway

  • the second measure is actually 7/8 then 10/8 haha, then it returns to 7/8-9/8

  • the verse is 7/8 then 9/8, take it from a drummer, you can count 7 notes on his hi-hat before the snare accent transitions to the next measure, in which he plays 9 notes on his hi-hat, and goes back to 7.

  • @progbiproduct By verse do you mean what they are playing from 0:16 for example? Cause as a fellow drummer I count it as 2 Bars of 4/4, A bar of 5/4 and then one more bar of 4. Seems to be the pattern for the riff.

  • what the fucks, i thought there were retards counting time signatures only in my country

  • HOMO EROTIC QUARALL

  • thomas pridgen is a shy boy

  • too short >:

  • The 11 dislikes were my neighbours

  • its in 6/8, there is a part in 17/8 but thats not the part @zehnism is talking about

  • sisco kid was a friend of mine

  • It's not in 6/8 or 3/4, whether they're just feeling it or not.

  • wow hearing this again has made me fall back in love with this album, Mars is the best! One of my favorites of all time

  • Get. The. Fuck. Down.

  • baby making music

  • Awesome. Simply awesome.

  • Sounds more like a combination of a cut time 4/4 and 5/4 to me.

  • ok you guys are seriously douche bags for fucking trying to figure out the time signatures and arguing over it! The song is sex, plain and simple!

  • the first verse sounds like 17/4 to me or 8/4 then 9/4

  • Comment removed

  • Comment removed

  • It's 2 8/8's, a 10/8 then an 8/8....Sigh!

  • It's 3 8/4's followed by a 10/8...Sigh

  • That screaming at the end lol. Usually I don't like screaming, but man, it's so perfectly placed, and the chaos of this song just adds to the insanity of it. I feel like someone is tearing my head off, but in a good way lol.

  • Just listened to this song for the first time tonight, fucking awesome. Also, not sure if I'm correct but from listening to the verses the time signature I'm getting is three bars of 4/4 then one bar of 5/4. Correct me if that's wrong.

  • its 123. 45. then 678

  • The Mars Volta.. I can't follow you anymore.

  • Finally! I found it!

  • Awesome song , fucking great chorus ( Where's that freaking corpse anyway ? ) , crazy rhythms ( Pridgen owns ) , fucking great guitar playing and I just remembered i have a six pack on my cellar and a pressing thought to put this on replay till morning . Who's in ?

  • its 2/2, 4/4, and 5/8 lol

  • @chiledrummer good ear ;)

  • Well, it's pretty obvious you are all wrong about the time signatures.

(It's 9098907/1 in the verse, and 5/590 in the chorus).

Probably the Soothsayer is just laughing about your ridiculous use of human (non interstellar-realm of the deads) time signatures.

  • @eMaLiO36 wow... i hope you were joking man... not about the time signatures but about everything else... thats just scary lol but funny too lol, don't get me wrong i'm not trying to start an argument or talk shit i'm just saying lol

  • best modern psychedelic band hands down

  • some much mars volta songs come from king crimson riffs, this song is basically 21st century schizoid man. i thought this song was original, bums me out to know it was basically created many years before.

  • @heypono then dont listen to it douchebag

  • @lebronsmyboy6

    cry baby

  • @heypono ok noob

  • @heypono yeah, but it's so hard not to slightly rip off songs these days. There are so many out there that it's impossible to keep track of them all. Hell Led Zeppelin was the king of ripping people off and they practically invented rock the way it is today (with the help of some other key bands of course), and this was 40 years ago now.

  • @heypono , Its more about using king crimson as inspiration. This song is completely different to the feel of 21st CSM.

  • this band is straght up legit.

  • Weird as fuck song. So good though.

  • Too good to be true music... : }

  • 5:17-5:25 makes me laugh so fucking hard

  • this is a complete new musical experience for me!

    how awesome is this shit!!

  • jaja q chido :D

  • jaja q chido

  • i miss jon theodore though

  • For as much as you guys can't agree on the time signatures, just remember that the musicians probably aren't counting this at all. They simply feel it, as you should as well. Who fucking cares if it's 6/8 or 3/4 (it's 6/8, just listen to Thomas). You know for sure he isn't trying to count this as he is playing

  • @zehnism amen.

  • @zehnism it is actually neither of those time signatures. The beginning is a bar of 8/8 and 9/8 repeated, then it goes into the chorus where it becomes 8/8/ and 10/8 thats all the farther i kept tabs. After it goes through that structure a couple of times it changes. The truth is its jazz, and you are completely right, its meant to be fealt. oh there is the 6/8 at the end. maybe i should listen to the entire thing first. bad ass.

  • @zehnism actually they are changing the time every couple counts. try nodding to your head to the song, it's impossible to keep rhythm cuz it keeps changing. you can tell if u listen to enough music, it's mindblowingly complicated.

  • @zehnism

are you sure it's 6/8? I've been trying to count this all damn day and 6/8 just doesn't work.....maybe 11/8?

  • @jdub823 actually it's 17/8 the whole measure

  • @mariorossipuzza First right answer! good work, that is the only correct sounding measure

  • @mariorossipuzza that's the time signature in the beginning,

everyone is talking about the time signature at 3:48

  • @ijustfartedsoloud it's 6/8 or 12/8. try to count One, Two, Three, One, Two, Three, One, Two, Three...

  • @zehnism Yeah, but I'm sure they at least know what time signature it is, it would be inane for a drummer not to, especially one like Thomas. Obviously, I'm sure he wasn't going 1, 2, 3, 4.. while he was playing the beat, but you get what I mean.

  • @zehnism tons of musicians, that's who

  • @zehnism actually I think that they may be following the time signatures, because as you probably know Omar does the composing and he gives to the other musicians the songs and they just play them without knowing which song are they actually playing. Though I believe that Omar has not musical education so he wouldn't be able to write the songs on a pentagram (I'm not sure if that's the correct word) so maybe you're right.

  • @zehnism come on if you only feel it you make 4/4 but if you use more maths you can get different time signatures and thats amazing beacause its part of making music dont say that who fucking cares because musicians do care

  • @zehnism honestly, thomas is not smart enough to probably understand wierd time signatures. he just plays, your completely right

  • @zehnism i must disagree, i know feeling is first, but for theoricals there is a bit of importance for signatures... mars volta doesnt sound like much others because of that and others little details, love this song !

  • @zehnism I wonder why this is the highest rated comment.

This band is known for meticulously arranging everything they write. Maybe when they recorded it they "just felt it" but they had to have written it at some point which means they had to count it. And are you talking about the bridge that starts at 3:50? Because that's mostly in 6/8 but the rest of the song sounds to me like 9/8, 4/4, and 5/4. Definitely not 6/8.

  • @xxinputxx seems i cant put anything past you, mr fripp

  • 6/8? lol. 3/4

  • @cinnabin 9/12 ^__^

  • @cinnabin 6/8 is in no way 3/4. This isn't math class.

  • @XxInputxX

No it's not, but you can sure as hell count 123,123 over a 6/8 bar

  • @XxInputxX

No it's not, but you can sure as hell count 123,123 over a 6/8 bar

  • @cinnabin 6/8 isn't 3/4 if its held with 8th notes, but otherwise yes

  • great song but I just can't get into pridgen. thankfully a drummer who is skilled in dynamics is joining the volta(deantoni parks), so it will be more like when theodore was rocking the drums for the volta. i haven't been this stoked for a new album by then in a while.

  • @Kozlen That's a little abnormal that you can't "get into" Pridgen. Is his drumming just too technical for it to sound coherent to you? I'm just curious because his execution(on the record) is basically perfect. I suppose he doesn't have many modes other than wild animal but I think it fits the Volta../Will miss/ Can't go wrong with Deantoni though.

  • @Kozlen I love Pridgen but I agree. I liked in their earlier work you could hear a lot of latin and jazz influence in the percussion. Pridgen is skilled, but he basically just wailed his ass off, and it got a little chaotic after awhile.

  • The 4 scumf*cks that disliked this song need golden showers.

  • @TheAnonymousWitness myself and r. kelly have volunteered for giving these fuckers the golden shower!!

  • @TheAnonymousWitness The banal incubi who disliked this probably like golden showers.
