If you don't have a DSi, get an XL. It's got a way bigger screen. I mean seriously, it's 93% bigger?! That's nearly doubled. Plus it's got a cooler stylus ;) and more battery power. If you have a DSi, and you have spare money, or even for Christmas, get an XL for goodness sakes. It's extra, and if you don't want the DSi, sell it on Ebay or Craigslist or something

Also, you don't know how positive the size difference is until you have played on a DSi XL for a good amount of time.
