  • This song sounded ALOT BETTER when Randy Miesner was in the band.

Check out the video of this song with the original lineup from 1973.

  • No bands from that era can sing like these dudes :). They still have the pipes and harmonies....

  • Love it

  • how comes 6 dislike?

  • oh, ive danced to this song. line dance. love it much:D

  • i just don't think there's enough guitars on that stage ;-)

  • henley can sing all he wants just stay behind the drums

  • Best band ever

  • @CanucksLegend

    Too right mate

  • I loved this song from the first time i heard it!

  • Never get tired of this song...Long Live the Eagles...boo-yaa!

  • only the eagles could win 6 grammys with 6 different genres of music!!!!!!!!

  • ONE OF THEE BEST GROUPS TO EVER MAKE GOOD RECORDS ON THEIR OWN OR ON THEIR OWN

  • great song

  • I LOVE the Eagles, and to see a Rock Legend Band on the CMT Awards show, Priceless

  • @kimstudiok CMA********

  • I love the Eagles

  • @alexisrg7 the best group of all time love the eagles

  • Get over it

  • I've been ill, bed-bound, in surgery ,broken and distorted for about 8 months consecutive now. Today I am better, but I am double cautious about tomorrow.

  • The Eagles have written some of the best country songs EVER!!

  • ok

    x

  • ok

  • The Eagles would never have been invited to perform at the CMAs in the 70's because they wouldn't have been as easily accepted by Nashville as they would eventually in the 90's and beyond.

  • I never saw this at the time it originally aired, but I did buy the CD at Wal-mart shortly thereafter and I only liked this and one other song on it.I didn't have a computer then or I would have just purchased those songs off of iTunes.

  • chadlovesdrums, there is no doubt that STUERT SMITH is an amazing talent. I feel that so many Eagles Fans love (and miss) Don Felder because basically Felder felt like he was a "member" of the Eagles as opposed to someone who just joined the band in 1974. I think that Frey and Henley (who were obviously original members) used that against Felder when it came to "royalties". What a shame. Such an awesome band scarred by greed. So sad.

  • @robtuohy1

Felder actually owned 33.3 % of Eagles, and he was CFO of Eagles LTD when he suddenly got sacked after making inquries about where all of the money was going..

  • I'm not a country music fan, but I'll listen to anything if it's the Eagles performing it.

  • Nobody can compare to Randy Meissner's vocals on "Take it to the Limit". It's such a shame that Frey has taken that song and totally destroyed it.

  • Love the album this song is on!! They still got it.

  • They still sound amazing but i really miss don felder. His guitar playing was so fantastic and made the special eagles sound.

  • they should make an extended version, cuz i cant get enough of this XD

  • Is that Joe Walsh or V.P. Joe Biden on bass at 3:03??? They're startin' to look the same!

  • joe plays guitar, tim schmit is on bass

  • awesome song.reminds me of walk of life by dire straits!!!

  • Fantastic Concerts in Iceland this evening @elderlybros wort all of the money!!! Joe Walsh lost himself in some guitar art <3

  • Comment removed

  • I'm not paying 275.00 to see anybody sorry!

  • Frey and Henley are two of the greediest bastards on the planet. How Long was written by JD Souther in the early seventies and since Frey and Henley can't write a decent song anymore they had to rely on their long time friend JD to bail them out. It's the only song I remember as being a hit from the last debacle they called an album.

  • @GregDrayGregDray AMEN!!!

  • It may be cliche, but these guys really are like fine wine-better with age!!

  • Why is one of the best guitarists around (Joe Walsh) relegated to a bit part and not even playing lead?? Baffling

  • Mr. Don Henley and the guys are tops! There will never be another group like this! Their voices and musical ability are superb! They will remain in the archives - "How Long" - Forever.

  • The most talented band ever. They were rock and country and had more talent than any other band ever.

  • The Eagles' only awards performance

  • I didnt know the eagles were considered country...i thought they were classic rock...hmm

  • @HunterBudy12 who said they were country '''''''' we hav seen rap play at country awards hello

  • @HunterBudy12 who said they were country '''''''' we have seen rap play at country awards hello

  • @HunterBudy12 Well, they're bot pure country, but they did many songs with strong country flavor, including this one.

'Take it Easy' 'Desperado' 'Lyin Eyes' 'New Kid in Town' 'Girl From Yesterday' are all country songs.

  • Awesome. But 4 guitars is 2 too many

  • Timothy B schmit is awesome!!

  • as far as steuart smith goes. Phenominal guitarist. i saw them in kansas city in 2009. may not be quite as good as felder but he's close. And u cant blame steuart. he was just hired on as a replacement. the problem was for felder he wasnt more prominent in the band. didnt sing much. so replacing him was like replacing a band member. they couldnt replace henley or walsh but its because of their vocals not their playing. felder just didnt carry a big enough stick in the band.

  • they run out of money and get back together.......... but stillllll, the best band ever.

  • As far as Felder goes Henley and Frye done him wrong. But listening to both era's as far as the sound goes I see it as no big loss.

  • I do think when we talk Eagles we must honor Bernie Leadon. If you listen to the old vids you will know that Bernie Leadon is totally responsible for the Eagles sound and let us not leave out Randy Meisner's awesome bass work.....yes Don Felder was way way good and added another demension their music.....I think we can agree the Eagles are one of a kind and Frye and Henley were were two of the most prolific writers of the 20th century.....

  • I do think when we talk Eagles we must honor Bernie Leadon. If you listen to the ong vid you will know that Bernie is totally responsible for the Eagles sound and lets us not leave out Randy Meisner's awesom bass work.....

  • Eagles - How Long (1973) is much better

  • Comment removed

  • I grew up with the Eagles, they have always been my favorite band and it's been 30 years now. I have a lot of respect for Don Felder but I also have MASSIVE respect for Stuert Smith..... The guy stepped up and filled the boots of a LEGEND and he did it with a LOT of style and a lot of class. He is an amazing guitarist and song writer and if It wasn't for him I don't think I would have had the opportunity to see them live. I love to watch him play guitar.

  • Thanks again dmcdante. I play in a band that does some Eagles numbers, as well as other covers. We do the harmonies well, and are OK on the backing. I wanted to see if I could get closer to their sound as the Band's guitarist. I have a 60th anniversary Strat, which sound OK, but the trem bridge works against note bending of only one string. Thought a Tele would be the way to go. Reconsidering now thank you. Any general tips or comments on his SG Junior (eg is it stock?).

  • Comment removed

  • @Brontosman Nice! Harmonizing is really the hardest thing to do when covering their songs.

I believe the SG Junior is bone stock with a p90 pickup but I'm not sure.

BTW in several tunes like New Kid in Town and Love Will Keep Us Alive, Steuart Smith uses his 58' Strat which is equiped with EMG pickups. What a surprise he seems to use non-typical equipments to generate his unique sound.

  • Thanks dmc2dante. Do you think he used this on the album for How Long? And what amp do you think he uses?

  • @Brontosman You're welcome mate. In the video, he used a Peavey Classic 50 4x10. I believe he used the same guitar and amp in the album version since the tone in the live version was close to the album one.

  • <3

  • FANTASTIC!!!! no other words !!!

  • Hi Eagles fans - can anyone tell me what guitar is used to do the solos in the album version and by whom ? The solos here live are being done by the guy on the far right on what looks like an SG Gibson ?? Thanks ! Don

  • @Brontosman The one on the far right is Steuart Smith, the guitarist filling Don Felder's position since Felder left. The guitar is a Gibson SG Junior

  • the eagles are the best band i ever saw...i saw them in 94 on the reunion tour and don felder was incredible....sorry he left...

this song is great..and it sounds like vintage eagles...i have the cd and its ok...lot of forgettable songs..but this song sounds great ...i wish there more more songs as well written and recorded as this one on their last cd...

to much complaining about a dismal world..yeah for me..not them those multi millionaires...

  • i luv this song for some reason, if i told my mates they would gimme so much shit.

  • I just went to see them in Bangkok and all I can say is...AWESOME!! I suddenly came back home to Google for more Stuert Smith's discography because he was my favorite in the concert. I just figured out he was not one of the members before. What a shame! Anyhow, I'm really following his work from now...

  • Hey Metallic Bill what's up?Yes, it was just a typo, but the Eagles, still are great, I do miss Don Felder so, I have both Eagles live that I can find, Hell Freezes Over and Live in Melbourne, if I could find there old one, I'd buy it too, I find parts of it on UTube, but I can't find it in any store....or online, YET...Hey /bill I think that Pink Floyd and Jethro Tull, are pretty darn good too...So are the doobie brother's but hey, right now, I can't find my picks,,,,,

  • For another cover, and a song they used to do back in the 70s, I thought what better way to reintroduce the band, I like how Frey sings "Shining in the sun" live, versus the recorded version, gives it a raw edge! haha Recall Longbranch Pennywhistle?? Well, that's his old partner who wrote the song! haha

  • Not close as good as "real live".

  • Steuart Smith is a great guitarist, don't be hattin' hey, I miss Felder as much as the next guy, but hey, don't be a hatter,,,,,,

  • @matthewjparvin " A Mad Hatter?", It's Hater, at least you spelled Stu's name right, and I got it wrong, it's odd though. Felder seems a very nice guy and his book was a touching read, fantastic too!

  • The best band in the this show, they are setting the example. Actually this is the best band in America!

  • @ZR1Terror In the World, You know I think the UK band UFO is one of the best ever, and my list is prime example; UFO, Eagles, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, The Who, the Stones, and special mention; The Beatles (I can live without those blokes!!)

  • i see alot of comments about stuert smith yes he may not be felder god knows no one can ever replace the guitar legend but what some of you may not know is with there album in 2007 ''long road out of eden'' stuert had a lot to do with it Don henley admires stuert he said he has been a huge inspiration and co wrote a few of the songs on the said album and not to mention is a fantastic guitarist no doubt so dont hate on him and long live americas greatest band ''The Eagles''

  • @chadlovesdrums We use to have a Classic Rock Station here in Little Rock That had the best DJ ever, Tommy Smith.Once a year he would open the show up for votes and comments on the greatest rock band of all time.Every year guess who won? EAGLES. THere is a good reason for that. They are GREAT!!!

  • @chadlovesdrums It's Stueart if I recall, however, he's a career session player of sorts, and they've said for some time, he'll never be a FULL ON official member of the Eagles, and since Don Felder was part Co-partner/owner in Eagles Ltd. That was such a hassle, they continue without much change there since his split. I imagine Stu and the others have a pay cut compared to Frey and Henley. However, it's good for the fans that they soldier on for the sake of the music, it's the most important!

  • @chadlovesdrums

stews a session man..competent..thats all...trust me..henley could have found inspiration from felder..a load more...but he and frey wanted to cut him down from full partner..to 15 percent....but thats like mccartney and harrison telling that to ringo..you aint an equal partner no more now take 15 percent

i have seen the greats..duane allman, clapton, page, beck, van halen, dickie betts, etc...and no one has a sweeter tone then felder..happy i saw him in '94 with the eagles

  • @chadlovesdrums Agree that Stuert Smith is an amazing guitarist. It's just that IMHO the Eagles have lost "something" since Felder left, and to be honest (and I'm an Eagles fan going back to the 70s) Long Road out of Eden is weak. But am I glad they are still touring, with or without Felder, yes of course, are they as strong a line up without Felder, of course not. Do I expect things to change, again of course not !!

  • @chadlovesdrums ....I agree with you. No one can replace Felder but not enough credit is given to Meissner and Leadon either. Steuart Smith is a fabulous guitarist, but if Henley and Frey want to do what's right, they ought to make him a permanent member of The Eagles instead of just a side man!

  • @chadlovesdrums I'm not sure why YouTube commenters refuse to use punctuation. You evidently know how to use quotation marks, but didn't use a single comma or period. It makes your comment extremely difficult to read.

  • @diggnate85 becuase its only youtube who cares

  • @chadlovesdrums You better believe it. I only wish that The Eagles will recognize Stuart as a real Eagle, not just the 'fifth Eagle.' He co-wrote Walking In The Weeds and Sarah (my daughter) and I love that song.

  • they may all look very different from when they first started, but the magic they possessed, they possess still.

i want nothing more than to see them live. never had the opputrunity. does anyone know if they will be coming to montreal anytime in the next few years???

  • @webcreeper2002 na mate there done this will be there last world tour

  • @chadlovesdrums

noooooooooo!!!!!! now im pissed off. well i hope they change their minds in a few years

  • @webcreeper2002 no well there getting older and as you can hear they dont sound like they used to, glenn has trouble hitting certain notes and as much as i really dont want to admit it there not gona be doing this forever and the way music is going, real music like these legends are gona fade in the background only to be replaced by auto tune and mimeing actor like brittany spears and lady caca. but one thing i do know they will do a few solo acts after the tour.

  • @chadlovesdrums Solo releases are on the "docket", I expect that as well, however, I believe the band will be in hiatus, so they don't stress out during the touring stints, and I think they better be re-ignited to record some more new material, and make it another double CD. If I recall, It could have been three CDs worth? Remember how Don Felder commented the songs on Long Road were done earlier with him in the band and the record company thought the quality sub-par! Yet they dusted them off!

  • @chadlovesdrums

I disagree. I saw them twice on this tour, once front row in Nashville. They were right on with all their harmonies, hit all the notes and the sound was awesome. Yeah they are older, but they still got it. And, at least they did this live at the CMT's unlike many who fake it, esp. at other awards shows, like Britney (gag) Spears!

  • @webcreeper2002 They are absolutely spot on! Saw them twice! If you check their site, you can see their tour dates. I thought their last date was going to be here in Hong Kong, but they keep adding on. Who knows if they might go back to the Americas!

  • @EaglesStir

yeah i did check the site, thats why i was panicking. yeah i hope they do come back for one grand tour. i mean, ppl know they r older and sound slightly different, but they r still one of the best live performers around.

  • @EaglesStir They plan to tour UK and America in 2011 for a few shows, IIRC

  • @mrmarleybob !!!!! You are obviously not very familiar with the works of the eagles or any of the laurel canyon / Los Angeles music scene ! Frey Henley Walsh felder were all there living the dream & embracing the lifestyle that came with it ! There music came from the soul & it meant something to them ! So fuck you motherfucker ! Go listen to some reggae ! And yeah Stuart smith still sucks just like your opinion

  • @MrMegaFredzeppelin: sorry man, didn't mean to piss you off. Anyway, merry christmas...

  • THIS SONG KICKS "ASS"

  • Yes it is a JD souther song - I bought the album on Ebay just to check out the original - Great sonf - rest of the album a bit iffy..

  • Isn't this a J D Souther song?

  • The originals (well nearly) and the best, but the Dutch Eagles come oh so close, still great music.

  • I think the boys do a good job but try --- justconnect4 ---

    For a different version

    Have a laugh on us.

  • Smith plays guitar like a robot ! He's not even a real member ! He is by no means felder !

  • @lordaaronsmith u think anyone wants to hear that fucking crap anymore...the guy is an awesome guitarist and by the way..if people as talented as these guys WANT HIM to play their songs....WHO THE FUCK ARE YOU TO SAY HE AINT GOOD ENOUGH...what a twat.

  • I love country music..., this song is just unique.

  • The Eagles are one of thee greatest Country/Rock bands in all of history. Way 2 go guys. You can still play a decent tone at such a older age.

  • awesome song ever

  • Stueart Smith has not been with them since 1994 cause Don Felder wasnt fired until 2001. Smith came on board after Felder was sacked.

  • gr8 song, vid sux tho

  • It's amazing that 40 years after they started - they still sound as crisp as they did when they came out with Take It Easy. This group is the most successful rock group in American history and they get no props at all. How could VH1 run a list of the top 100 acts of all time - and the Eagles didn't make the top 100 ? They have 2 of the top 10 selling albums of alll time, including #1. Can someone explain that one to me ? Live on Eagles - we love ya in the heartland !

  • @woodyinappleton62 this band is nearly as old as I am. I listened to them from the age of 16 and 30 years later i still like to sing a long to some of the finest music out there. thank you the Eagles and ignore these commercial tv awards.

  • @woodyinappleton62 I doubt it's been 40 years, it was 1972? I was born in 1966, I'm not 45 yet! haha Anyway, it's now been "A Long Run", I hear from the FastLane fanclub online, the Eagles will finish out UK and USA dates and be winding down for a time, perhaps some solo releases to follow in the next year or so. I really hope they knock out a new album

  • @woodyinappleton62

Do they have the no.1 selling album? Who cares, they rock never the less.

  • @woodyinappleton62 well its simple they are country rock and not contempary rock and thats wat you see on vh1 contempary artists not legends lol

  • @woodyinappleton62 There's a simple answer. VH1 are fucking stupid. Most of turds in their top 100 will be erased from memory while Don and the lads will still be played all over the world.

  • @withnail555 Amen to that my friend!

  • @woodyinappleton62 - I can't believe VH1 didn't list them as an act out of 100. That's insane.

  • Right name, wrong spelling. Steuart Smith. He rocks. Saw the Eagles in Louisville on Oct 16th and his performance was absolutely flawless.

  • Um. His name is Stewart Smith. Not Stanley and he's been with them since '94.

  • @RainbowGrrl75 . It's Steuart Smith and he totally rocks. My wife and I saw the Eagles on Oct 16 in Louisville, KY and his performance was absolutely flawless.

  • @tdhall7165a I was there, too! They rocked the place! They couldn't have picked a better act to open the bucket; their performance was completely spot on.

  • @tdhall7165a Your wife gave me a blowjob that morning October 16th and I gave her the two Eagles tickets in exchange for her allowing me to nut in her mouth. Her performance was absolutely flawless.

  • Legends !!!

  • LEGENDS !!!

  • They opened their LRoE Tour Gig in Manchester last year with this xD

It was something else like, lights went down; we are sitting there wondering whats happened; no introduction or anything when How Long just opens up; lights come up and we're into the gig :P

    Bloody brilliant likes

  • I hope all the guys in the audience here especially Tim McGraw and Kenny Chesney heard how real music sounds. The great thing with The Eagles is that they don't need a million dollars worth of recording software and thousands of dollars in studio musicians to make music (Taylor Swift, Trace Adkins) they need instruments and thats it. Id love to sit around the campfire and drink a few with these guys, not Joe of course he's living one day at a time (lol), and listen to raw, pure, music.

  • @southerncrossingband how can you sit there and assume that guys like Trace and Tim and people like Taylor Swift have no idea what real music sounds like?

  • @southerncrossingband Hells yes! Tim McGraw, this is what it sounds like when people can sing in tune without digital manipulation. You hear that sound? It's called talent.

  • Cant wait to see them in 9 days! These guys have been my idles since i was like 5 and i have my mom to thank for that. Im 19 now but these guys are just amazing.

  • I love that. Beautiful, I just wanna know the line up......the members. Who can help?

  • @ohbradky Glenn Frey- lead guitar, Don Henley- drums, backup guitar, Joe Walsh- electric guitar, Timothy Schmidt- bass. The guy on the far end is Stanley Smith- he plays electric and sings backup vocals, though he's not an official Eagle.

  • Cracking song, cracking vid, crackikng performance, cracking group, superb. (Footnote: Cracking is a British term for fabulous) :)

  • nice!

  • don henley is the backbone of the band. so versatile.

  • I MISS THE EAGLES!

  • this is a really good song... w eagles

  • at every performance stuart smith is always on the far side .... that must mean that he is not an official Eagle

  • @PEDROCLASSIC he is that side cos thats the side dont feldner was always on

  • @statusquoman1 yeah. they are just the HIRED MUSICIANS

  • so how long? how long before they go back to the studio and make another album with more harmonies, more acoustics, more ahhhs and oohhhs.

  • Well done live version! And who's doing the guitar work that really moves the song? It's like the camera ignores him. but not my ears! He sure has that classic Eagles sound down!

And the Dixie Chicks - they may not have this much drive and excitement, but they are more folkish. Excellent musicians, wonderful singers. Very emotional songs. But maybe best not mentioned on an Eagles site. They can be similar, but very different. Plus, unlike most bands, they can get along!

  • Is it Henley singing the second verse?

  • Comment removed

  • @PEDROCLASSIC cooll thanks

  • they have lost there voice no doubt glenn the most and yet don still sounds the same as he did 20/30 odd years back he is best singer out of the boys

  • never in the history of modern music came a band as pro as the eagles.

  • I remember watching this when it was on thinkin, man, they still got it!.

  • If i dont see the good ol days, shinin' in the sun. Ill be doin fine, and then some!!!!

  • sounds great.. little country n rock and all eagles.... they still got it!!!!

  • Obvious that Glenn Frey dyes his hair. Hey, Glenn your 60 something. Get used to it !

  • how long? how long will i wait for a new record? great backing vocals. oh yeah they still got it. thanks to country rock...i mean THANKS TO POCO and Mr FURAY

  • how long? how long will i wait for a new record?

  • not to damm bad for a bunch of guys in there 60's let's see guys half there age do better rock on eagles

  • Check out the eagles experience live from johannesburg, they are an australian tribute show and there don henley is from glasgow in scotland. He Sounds totally awsome and as close to the real band and man himself

  • Check out the australian eagles experience (Hotel California) on youtube, there version is the closest you will get to the real deal.

There drummer plays and sounds just like Don henley AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I saw and heard them 3 times on stage. Everytime it was amazing ( im 64 Years old now )

  • Wow ... this version of "How Long" is eons upon eons BEHIND the rendition they performed in the early 70's (with Meisner and Leadon)....such a shame....

  • I bet that most everybody back stage who was to perform dropped what they were doing to watch the Eagles play live. I wouldn't blame them one bit because that's what I'd have done!

  • wow what group

  • sounds great....
