  • Nice bow, but I'd point out that for most people it might be an idea to leave the string off until they are done putting the blade to the wood XD

  • @88Kamikaze69 its called tillering foo

  • @McOrca09

    Tillering foo?

Never heard that before, what does it mean?

  • @88Kamikaze69 well you could look it up and get a better def. from that then me, but basically when your done carving the bow you basically put on the string and take/shave off some more wood for basically detailing and finishing , it's basically to get both sides of the bow as evenly close to each other as you can so it performs it's best and is more sturdy.

  • @McOrca09

    Interesting...

Seems I learned something new today as well, productive day ^^

Fair enough, I can see that I was in error with my earlier statement.

  • i wish i saw this video before i cut down a small oak tree by hand split it and tried to carve a seven foot bow out of the halves... oak is not for the beginners

  • kul klipp:)

  • I used to use willow branches, because the wood is very flexible and is pretty straight and knot-less yet strong. U can find it growing by the side of most waterways and riversides etc.. What other wood would u recommend?

  • @renegadedaemon best woods for bow-making are hazel and yew. combine the two for a superbly powerful longbow, but such a process is long and difficult.

  • wow nice

  • what did you use for the fletchings on your arrows? btw that's an awesome bow.

  • whats da draw whait

  • How did you learn to make bows Fredde?

  • @MrVoiceofreason123

  • Hello Hobbexp,

How long are your arrow's(in meters)

I want to make that bow to.

but i dont know how long i need to make it.

    Thank you

  • you long you make your bow and arrows depends on how long draw lengths you have, good luck

  • fvrthskbgskjvard

  • oooooh yeah !

  • Hobbexp, I was just wondering, I have a machete and an axe, which of the two would you recommend me to take with me if I had to survive somewhere?

    Cheers,

    Luke.

  • that really does depend if your in like hardwoodforest then take the axe because machetes are kinda flimsy

  • i dont know, in a survival situation i gonna be happy to have some thing to cut with,

    a machete or axe, :0)

  • where u learn to make it

  • Longer videos please, you should have 2 or 3 part videos. Either way great videos. I'm looking into Mora knives now, cause of you.

  • how strong would the string need to be?

  • how strong bow are you making ???

  • not sure yet, what sort of draw weight would i be looking at ?

  • i assume that you are seeking a hunting bow;

30lb for hunting medium size game larger than a dog smaller than a young red deer; i think it's the right size you should be looking for) is appropriate ; don't try to make anything that is over 120 lb ; it's pretty hard to build and way too powerful for hunting what you need

  • thx m8 think il go for bout 30lb

  • nice. how long do those last?

  • for a relly really long time,, :0)

  • dont they break when they dry up?

  • if you know what you do they dont, :0)

  • What kind of wood is it???

  • ash

  • how many year you hawe been doing bows??

  • hobbexp, thanks for your answer one my message, but can you give the length of your arrows in centimeters, than i know how i can make them fly accurate. I should be very glad with your answer, than i know finally how i to make a good bow and arrows

  • hobbexp, I have a few questions, I would like to know the length of the bow you make in your video, and the lengt of your arrows. I would realy appreciate it if you answer my questions. I know that my English isn't very good, Sorry i hope you can understand me

  • i almost always make my bows to long,

i make them short when they have dry,

  • go acdc!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Have you thought about lashing it to a form while it is drying so it will have a little bit of recurve in the limbs?

  • have you try that??

  • I haven't tried that, I have only heard and read about it being done. Most of the Bows I have done were laminated so it is a lot different. If you can find a copy of the "Traditional bowyers bible" they talk about doing it.

  • i have not than that, but i have a friends who have try, and its not working out for them, if i like to have recurve in the limbs then i laminated the bow, :0)

  • Great job and good music. Let me ask you something....is that your favorit knife? ;-)

  • yeah i think i can say its one of my favorits :0)

  • What kind of wood are you using? I tried out here with maple, dogwood, cherry and apple trees, but i can't find something with a straight enough grain and it looks like yours has a good strait grain to it, so i was wondering what wood you use.

  • that bow is made in ash,, :0)

  • any specific breed of ash? I almost want to say that's mountain ash or white ash.

  • here is ash just ash, we only have one type of ash here :0)

  • lol. I live up here in washington up at the US. It's quite a drive to get any ash trees for my own bows.

  • in US you have Hickory, why not try that,

  • yeah, i think there's hickory up here somewhere. Mostly softwoods like hem and cedar. We have hardwoods like vine maple, but they aren't too great for bows. We might have apple wood (too knotty) and cherry, along with dogwood. But i guess i can try to get some from a store.

  • Cretaal, in my experience, pretty much any north american decidous tree will make a serviceable bow for taking game with a 35lb+ draw weight. Your quality of bow string, arrow, moisure content of the wood and proper brace height are going to be far more important factors, so I wouldnt stress so much on the wood type. Also you can find very good lumber boards such as hickory and oak at a local lumber yard usually.

  • the bow in the video is a ash bow and have a 43lb draw with 24 inch, ( good wood ) and i use a nylon string when i make them just for keep it simple, and later i change it to a plant fiber string i make in the bush, but now it is winter here and no plants to make strings for,

  • haha, funny you should mention. There's a huge lumber yard in walking distance from my house. But i find that the wood plays a huge part in the effectiveness of the bow. Maple breaks so easy and it's not a very "elastic" wood compared to ash or oak. But i'm going to walk to that lumber yard and look for some hickory and oak for a good composite bow.

  • in the UK we have Rowan Trees that are often called Mountain Ash as they have a similar appearance / leafs to Ash Trees but are much smaller in comparison and have red berries in the autumn :)

  • did you have any fletching on those arrows?

  • yes they have fletching, you can see that in the video :0)

  • good video you help alot of people thanks!

  • what did u use for the bowstring?

  • that bow have a nylon string

  • the rope that is white and have nylon fibres u mean?

  • a nylon string is made of nylon fibers.

  • nice vid

is walnut wood good to make bow?

and plz make a vid of making arrows

  • how long did it take u to perfect ur bowmaking skills

  • Im curious as to how you make your bowstrings

  • what the last ajustment

  • did u thin the limbs

  • yes a little.

  • great vids man! I watch alot of bushcraft stuff on youtube and i think you have some of the best videos! Do you plan on making a video on how to make a arrow??

  • ok thanks for the information

  • meant like what do you have to do last?

  • i just carve off a little more, so the bow flex better.

  • whats the last adjustment you have to MAKE?

  • yes almost :0)

  • Is that knife you used caleed frost mora? If it is, ive been looking for one. where do I get one.

  • the knife i have in the video is a mora frost viking, and wher you can get one? i dont know, i buy my on the gas station. :0)

  • cool thanks good videos

  • i just have trouble stringing my bow, it always gets loose. Do you have any tips?

  • are your bow string get loose?

you can look up bow knots on the internet,

    good luck man,

  • where can you find ash, willow, yew and how do they look like

  • its easy for you to check up fact about it on the internet,

  • I got mine form the local cemetery. They have a lot of Ash trees in the tree line around the back of the property.

This was AFTER I tried to get one in the local woods, got caught and had to pay a $70.00 fine :(

Ash trees are easy to find around Chicago. The leaves are very similar to hickory too. infact, I think any tree with that basic leaf pattern makes good bows.

Google Ash tree, you will see the leaf it has.

  • nice, you follow my advice. just bad about the $70 fine you get,

hope you like to show up your bow.

    (hickory works good to)

  • what wood is it?

  • that bow is made in ash,
