did the lead player screw up ?? Looks like he started to play a solo over the Lead vocal and the beginning of the 1st tune... Lively perf. nonetheless!!!
@glaetze the moody blues couldnt get on ed sullivan because of some visa hang up a decade after ed sullivan wnewfm was playing ed sullivan tapes not yet available to the public billy j. kramer did a benefit concert from the ed sullivan theater for world hunger year he said the dressing room is still the same they film the david letterman show in the ed sullivan theater the pretenders were on 3 times its in youtube and the beach boys too who were on ed sullivan
@glaetze We were sooo robbed of their music here in the US. They were on Sullivan in April 1964 which is when I first saw them, after listening to them out of Canada on CKLW in the wee hours. The Sullivan performance is here on YT. They performed Needles & Pins, but the audio quality was bad because it was live and John's amplifier failed. At least I think it's hear, unless the Sullivan people have yanked it. The Searchers did an amazing performance in spite of it.
The Searchers were folk rock before it was. "What Have They Done To The Rain" by Malvina 'Mama Lion' Reynolds was the very best version of the song and great for the era.
Was this show at Christmastime as they greet the audience w 'happy christmas' or were they just being funny? who of you knows???
The British Invasion groups all followed the same formula. This is a good example. Right down to simply having a great time on stage. Every group seemed to be having so much fun, and it carried over to us in the audience. I'm so glad to have seen it then, and to see it now again.
The Searchers....original line up. Smashing group...smashing times! No need for heavy duty bouncers or moronic gorrillas on the "door"! Mike Pender was the "looker" of the group. Still touring.
¡Excelente grupo de los años 60! Traen recuerdos muy gratos de nuestra juventud. El ritmo es increíble y su alegría muy contagiosa. El Perú los recuerda gratamente.
Wow, this is such a fantastic group. Such beautiful harmony singing, as well as powerful rock singing such as in "Farmer John". The instrumentation is impeccable. I should have added "Pender" to my list of surnames in my username - I can't get over how GORGEOUS Mike Pender is! WOW!! The others are cute too!
Always like the fact that they kept their 'pompadour' 'dos', and didn't cave in to the 'mop-top' fad initially. (nothing wrong wrong with the longer hairstyles, but I give them credit for focusing on their music and individuality.
Those English sound engineers were vfar better than the clowns who ever miked the Ed Sullivan Show stuff in 64 and 65!-although Chris's mic is too loud here!
Although NME this particular year of 1964 needed to have a better mike. (I've even seen John Lennon have trouble w/ that mike in nyrainbow's series of footage from this concert). (I do agree that Ed Sullivan Show's mikes in New York, at least until 1966 were horrible; even the less money for them "Shindig!" & "Hullabaloo" had better mikes than Ed Sullivan's Show).
Man, when I hear Don't Throw Your Love Away, I sure think The Byrds heard these guys loud and clear!! What a great rockin' band, then and always. Even the album they released late 70's was great!!! Thanks for the harmonies and the rockin backbeat!!
The Searchers had fine harmonies and were good musicians as well. Unfortunately, they didn't really fit in with the changes in music after '66. But, at least they got a chance to get their music out there in the first place. There are some amazing unknown acts now ,but, the mainstream won't give them the chance to get their music out there like it did back then.
What a gig that was!!! And thanks to good 'ole Youtube...We're AAALL THERE!!!!!! Oh Yeah!

great harmonies, and great control of singing and playing at the same time and that with swaying mikes, and probably little if no stage monitors.

this band should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Where on earth was I, when these guys were around?
The American music industry was shaking in their boots, during the British Invasion.
I sure would have loved to have seen them on the Ed Sullivan Show, etc.
They definitely were underexposed here in the U.S.
A real shame. They were awesome, at the time, (and still are.)

Time to say thanks to NYrainbow2 for having the patience and good taste to post these fave films.
They're a part of our musical history. I bought the Searchers first album in 64 when I was 8 years old.

You sure are right! The Sullivan show used alot of compression too especially on DC5 stuff WHEN they DID actual live and/or live assist.

Mike Pender is in the middle and Tony Jackson is to his right

DO you recall a short timer in the band by the name of Anthony Bridges. He is said to have been in the band for a few months in '63 or '64.
