Thanks to Jagger and Richards for having the amazing foresight to write the ultimate goth song for the ultimate goth band when Eldritch himself was still at primary school. They were into the occult around this time, they must have seen the Sisters Of Mercy coming. Were the Rolling Stones the first goths? A stunning cover version the Sisters make sound purely their own creation.
You seem to have missed the point of my reply. Telling someone to "shut the fuck up" doesn't exactly require much brainpower. Neither, it seems, did your reply to me.
This version of "Gimme Shelter" is just plain awful! The Sisters of Mercy excel at their own type of music, but covering a brilliant Rolling Stones song so badly is just a mistake!
This is a fabulous cover. Not only does it embody the feeling of the original song but it is enhanced by the Sisters' special feel. Loving Andrew's vocals!
A simply beautiful song with a relaxing and filling flow. It's nice to hear soft voices like these. Sometimes being silent tells more of the story then shouting out loud.
@DonRMB You are totally right... I have no problems with people who say that they like this better than the original but when they say that this (shit imo) is better than I crack up...
@Kittee23 Too true, they are a bunch of posh dirty old men. The most boring interview in the world is with that boring cunt, I think his name begins with a K, he is SO dull...
It's not better than the Stones, it's just as good.. depends on what version you feel like at the time, this is a darker version for sure, and at some moments, it feels right, & at others, the Stones do duty .. The song is excellent, no matter what! Thank god for both versions.... :-) It's a timeless classic now, & so it should be...
This is one of my fav songs...think K Richards (who wrote it) is under rated myself...but this version is, in my opinion better than the original and thanks for posting on here!!
How about faggy Mick Jagger having sex with David Bowie? Your comment is just another example of ignorance and stupidity, not to mention shitty taste in music. Keep your stupid homophobic opinions to yourself, you asshole!
i'm not trying to be a hater, but i just don't understand how this is better than the original version. Maybe i'm in the wrong neighborhood. Maybe i don't understand this band's deal...
I do Love this cover, but must give props to the Stones. Keith Richards guitar goes further than Andrew Eldritch's voice. This was prime cover material for the Sisters, though....
hmm. I ran a 'music experience' (a DJ at night) while at university, from 11pm - 3am, 3 times a week.. Great for students. Our show was called 'Gimme Shelter', and our theme was around hiding, shelter, safety, security or the opposite of those things. We opened with Sisters, always, and ended with Stones. In between, we explored a universe - in those days, Pixies were played a lot. Yup.
@BradyGoldie No, see the doom in the original song was implied by the music and Jagger's subtle vocals. Here, the music is menacing enough, but the vocals telegraph the doom. But, still, a cool version of song.
Sisters burned the original to the ground and resurrected it even better than before, never to be outdone....((pause for a moment of reverent silence))
@mishka1305 Nothing wrong with that mate. Original should by definition never be discounted, its has its own merit for being able to create. in this case I agree with you.
@mishka1305 Depends on whether you're talking the Stones at the time it was written (Mick Taylor & Keith, with Taylor doing the main solos), or as performed in the late '70s and after (Ron Wood & Keith), splitting the solos. I would prefer the Mick Taylor version than this, but not the Ron Wood version. You should listen to them both to get the difference. Mick Taylor was great - just couldn't keep up with the Boys' mischief!
While I do still prefer the Stones' version, I love the Sisters for being able to take such an un-Sister-like song and give it totally their own sound. It's a damn good cover =]
I like the band music on this song a lot, but have to warm up to the voice on this one. It's a little overkill, and now I see who Marilyn Manson is trying to copy the more I listen to old Sisters of Mercy. It just pisses me off that the best song on this album isn't posted on youtube anywhere - Temple of Love - off of this particular album. Great song.
I always prefer to give credit to the original song writers. However I prefer Sisters to Stones as a band. Also I think this song actually sounds like a storm from which you might actually need shelter. Add in that the lyrical twists give this song more powerful irony than the original.
This is stronger than the original just as Bauhaus outdid Bowie with Ziggy. Great original... better cover.
@untoashes777 listening to this can only make me think joy division could have done the ultimate cover. . . and also that the sisters ripped off the division sound in general . . .
@JDurden33 I wouldn't say something at petty as "The Sisters ripping off Joy Division", since considering the time period and the fact both were in the English music scene, it can be said at best that all these bands around the late 70's to early 80's were inspired by each other.
