  • Thanks to Jagger and Richards for having the amazing foresight to write the ultimate goth song for the ultimate goth band when Eldritch himself was still at primary school. They were into the occult around this time, they must have seen the Sisters Of Mercy coming. Were the Rolling Stones the first goths? A stunning cover version the Sisters make sound purely their own creation.

  • biggest song in the under ground during '88.

  • Two Thumbs Down.

  • @natep513 Why don't you stick those two thumbs up your ass?

  • @Pantera24

Yes, telling someone to shut up because he has an opinion you don't like is perfectly intelligent. Not.

  • @uktransplantedyank Yes, because using "not" to drive your point home is both creative an intelligent. Not *gasp* See? I can do it too.

  • @Sedrivus

You seem to have missed the point of my reply. Telling someone to "shut the fuck up" doesn't exactly require much brainpower. Neither, it seems, did your reply to me.

  • Love this version------first heard it way back in 1991. At least Eldritch never sold out unlike Jagger with his knighthood.

  • you have got to be kidding me....

  • This version of "Gimme Shelter" is just plain awful! The Sisters of Mercy excel at their own type of music, but covering a brilliant Rolling Stones song so badly is just a mistake!

  • @uktransplantedyank Your mother says otherwise....

  • @Sedrivus

Oh, joy. You're using mommy lines now. You really ARE scraping the bottom of the barrel.

  • War is just a kiss away??

  • @AliceNchainz011 yes, but love's just a shot away.........which is hope................jesus loves the sisters!

  • @AliceNchainz011 Think Romeo & Juliet, or something like that.

  • *.* MASTERPIECE! I love S.O.M, my gods!!

  • better than the r.s. version

  • This is a fabulous cover. Not only does it embody the feeling of the original song but it is enhanced by the Sisters' special feel. Loving Andrew's vocals!

  • gimme helter skelter

  • Great cover!

  • EPIC !!!

  • Imagine if Martin Scorsese used this version of the song in his movies.

  • Why the fuck does he say war is just a kiss away?

  • @666Tormentor666 he means it's very close... like...it's very easy to happen

  • @lefiosalex I just asked because in the original they sing war is just a shot away and love ist just a kiss away...

  • @666Tormentor666 sisters had to put a more "sisterish" lyric i guess haha

  • I'm a hardcore Stones fan, this is ridiculous.

    In the BEST way!

  • Rolling Stones should pay royalties to Sisters of Mercy to play this music. Words of Jagger. Sorry Stones fans.

  • OK, but lacks something. Gonads?

  • This interpretation of "Gimme Shelter" is a thousand times better than the "original"!

  • One of the best covers I've heard in sometime. After all these years, Andrew's voice STILL gives me chills

  • A simply beautiful song with a relaxing and filling flow. It's nice to hear soft voices like these. Sometimes being silent tells more of the story then shouting out loud.

  • It is both strange and fascinating.

  • Great tune ,my opinion the best version of Gimme Shelter , much better than original Rolling stones one !!!! nice and dark

  • i get it, a joke version, just like weird al yankovich

  • best best best power voice thunder voice dark voiceeee

  • Definately not better than the original..you guys are all crazy.. or maybe you just have different taste.. But I still think you're all crazy

  • @DonRMB You are totally right... I have no problems with people who say that they like this better than the original but when they say that this (shit imo) is better than I crack up...

  • @666Tormentor666 The Stones are shit! Sorry but I can't stand their music, at least the Sisters make it sound good

  • @Kittee23 Too true, they are a bunch of posh dirty old men. The most boring interview in the world is with that boring cunt, I think his name begins with a K, he is SO dull...

  • great cover

  • It's not better than the Stones, it's just as good.. depends on what version you feel like at the time, this is a darker version for sure, and at some moments, it feels right, & at others, the Stones do duty .. The song is excellent, no matter what! Thank god for both versions.... :-) It's a timeless classic now, & so it should be...

  • @malibumut I agree. Both are classics. This version is just as tough as the original.

  • This pisses on the original, and The Stones are a bunch of dirty old men anyway, so I am happy to diss them. The drummer seems OK though...

  • @Spankabuttux haha, the drummer is a drum machine.

  • @andrew83gq I meant the drummer of The Stones, who is not a machine. Nor as well monickered as Doctor Avalanche.

  • HELL CHE@

  • What can I say? Nice and dark like The Sisters are......

  • This is one of my fav songs...think K Richards (who wrote it) is under rated myself...but this version is, in my opinion better than the original and thanks for posting on here!!

  • what the fuck is this shit? this BLOWS compared to the original.

  • this version is better than the stones.

how it should be sung DARKER.

  • Just another example of how the faggy goth culture turns everything it touches into complete shit.

  • @RoastedToad

How about faggy Mick Jagger having sex with David Bowie? Your comment is just another example of ignorance and stupidity, not to mention shitty taste in music. Keep your stupid homophobic opinions to yourself, you asshole!

  • i'm not trying to be a hater, but i just don't understand how this is better than the original version. Maybe i'm in the wrong neighborhood. Maybe i don't understand this band's deal...

  • I used to dance to this all the time at goth clubs in my youth. Awesome song .I just wish I could find a recording of it for my itunes!

  • I do Love this cover, but must give props to the Stones. Keith Richards guitar goes further than Andrew Eldritch's voice. This was prime cover material for the Sisters, though....

  • Love, sisters, is just a shot away! So f....ing true!!!

  • yes better than the original

  • @FahtimaHatima

the stones are a bunch of pretentious twats. there i said it.

  • Oh, love his voice in this song!

  • Hawkwind also did a cover of this... all three versions kick ass...:)

  • This absolutely kicks ass

  • Gamo tis coveries

  • Better than the original?? are you out of your mind?

  • The Temple Of Love 12" may be my favorite recording of all time. It just doesn't get cooler than this.

  • sisters é foda...

  • Very interesting cover, prefer the Stones original though!

  • i have these guys playing on an audio cassette, oversize vinyl case

  • hmm. I ran a 'music experience' (a DJ at night) while at university, from 11pm - 3am, 3 times a week.. Great for students. Our show was called 'Gimme Shelter', and our theme was around hiding, shelter, safety, security or the opposite of those things. We opened with Sisters, always, and ended with Stones. In between, we explored a universe - in those days, Pixies were played a lot. Yup.

  • gimme shelter .........nice stones cover!

  • DAYUMMMMM, WHOEVER DANG THE LYRICS IS FUCKING HORIBLE

  • wtf is this

  • @Michaud1287 way better than the original? or who singing it? what day it is?

  • i didn't even know this existed. much love.

  • Music is cool. Vocals, not so much.

  • @cracks21229

the vocals is like, the best part. lol.

  • @BradyGoldie No, see the doom in the original song was implied by the music and Jagger's subtle vocals. Here, the music is menacing enough, but the vocals telegraph the doom. But, still, a cool version of song.

  • the original is pretty much one of my favourite songs of all time, but this is seriously awesome.

  • Not that good as original but quite good.........

  • a cool take on my favourite classic stones song (a rather recent, on a rolling stones time scale, would be ''has anybody seen my baby'')

  • Eargasmic

  • Love their version!

  • it's just a great song

  • One of the few covers that totally own the original. Kudos.

  • best band of the early 80's by far..loved them then, love them still...long live the sisterhood..R.I.P Doktor avalanche

  • i think this song is total class love the sisters of mercy,, thanx for posting it loftynl

  • The sisters of mercy is awesome..

Cover or not is the best ever

  • It's so much better than the original!!!

  • I do not usually like cover versions - plus I love the Rolling Stones!!! - yet I must admit that this one has got something special in it.

  • It's just a kiss away.

  • Am I right in believing this track was used in an advert for the RAC motoring organisation?

  • @jerry83ism Yes you are correct but it was the original Stones version they used in the RAC advert.

This was the van on the dark road if I remember.

  • THIS IS THE BEST SONG EVER!! AND YOU KNOW IT!! <3 I HEART IT LOVE,LOVE IT!! :)

  • gr8 song by sisters of mercy a guitarist is with them the gr8 tony james

from a short lived band sigue sigue sputnik

  • @Mr19shane71 Tony James didnt join the band till vision thing album, way later than this!

  • wicked i love this so much

  • oa.....sisters

  • This version of "gimme shelter" is the best ever, a great song

  • this version is so much better than original

  • GREAT COVER!!! <3

  • better than the Stones IMHO

  • Sisters burned the original to the ground and resurrected it even better than before, never to be outdone....((pause for a moment of reverent silence))

  • you're no phillistine! Love the Stones and the sisters but this version smacks the original on the arse! Keith Richards fave too

  • i prefer this to the stones version, call me a philistine, ah don' care!

  • @mishka1305 Nothing wrong with that mate. Original should by definition never be discounted, its has its own merit for being able to create. in this case I agree with you.

  • @mishka1305 Depends on whether you're talking the Stones at the time it was written (Mick Taylor & Keith, with Taylor doing the main solos), or as performed in the late '70s and after (Ron Wood & Keith), splitting the solos. I would prefer the Mick Taylor version than this, but not the Ron Wood version. You should listen to them both to get the difference. Mick Taylor was great - just couldn't keep up with the Boys' mischief!

  • While I do still prefer the Stones' version, I love the Sisters for being able to take such an un-Sister-like song and give it totally their own sound. It's a damn good cover =]

  • Thanks to Rolling Stones and Andrew. Great Song

  • I like the band music on this song a lot, but have to warm up to the voice on this one. It's a little overkill, and now I see who Marilyn Manson is trying to copy the more I listen to old Sisters of Mercy. It just pisses me off that the best song on this album isn't posted on youtube anywhere - Temple of Love - off of this particular album. Great song.

  • I like both versions the same, because they're so different.

  • I always prefer to give credit to the original song writers. However I prefer Sisters to Stones as a band. Also I think this song actually sounds like a storm from which you might actually need shelter. Add in that the lyrical twists give this song more powerful irony than the original.

This is stronger than the original just as Bauhaus outdid Bowie with Ziggy. Great original... better cover.

  • @vsander09 I agree with this completely!

  • @vsander09 yeah, its hippies vs goths :P

  • @vsander09 listen - Camisa de Venus - Só o fim. this is fuckin' rocks cover too!!

  • After all the years this track sill kicks ass !

  • Just HOW amazing can they be.....

  • Se aquele Madame Satã falasse...rsrsrs

  • I was lucky to see the original line up , Great band & great times,,,God I miss the 80's Sill a goth at heart

  • This is a brilliant version. I like Thinder's version too. Sisters are great! xx

  • superior than the original (by rolling stones) :)

  • I much prefer Andrew Eldritch's vocals. No harm in that

  • I like it better than original too. :))) It's simply about personal taste.

  • people if only you were there in the eighties...shit it was good

  • I was and it was

  • S.O.M just made this track a HELL of alot darker.

  • they did an outstanding version!

  • This song is AWESOME!

  • A very appropriate song for a most appropriate band to do this cover. A wonderful meld-the guitar is so elegantly done.

  • I bought this album cause of this song. it kicks.

  • 1. you've done good

    2. your in for a treat because it's totally awesome from start to finish.

  • Gimme Shelter from Sister of Mercy is simply The Best! Thanks for it.

  • my pleasure to post it..

  • @untoashes777 listening to this can only make me think joy division could have done the ultimate cover. . . and also that the sisters ripped off the division sound in general . . .

  • @JDurden33 I wouldn't say something at petty as "The Sisters ripping off Joy Division", since considering the time period and the fact both were in the English music scene, it can be said at best that all these bands around the late 70's to early 80's were inspired by each other.

Being a fan of both, I see more than a large enough difference between Joy Division and TSOM, especially since TSOM evolved much over the years due to the creative influence of the ever changing line up.

  • if this guy sang in german I would have to kill myself due to the creepyness-factor. just saying:)

  • Is this a Rolling Stones cover?

  • yeah you've heard it well ;)

    don't you love sisters covering!

  • Yeah. It's a pretty sweet cover.

  • @loftynl Indeedy,like, The Stooges.....well it's 1969 OKAAAAAY! ........we gotta War across theUSA !

  • No, the Stones covered Sisters of Mercy...

  • Lol!

  • yeh but this is better than that rubber lipped twats version

  • yes it is

  • You gotta be shitting me..! Sisters over Stones? Unreal.

..so did the Stones ever cover any of their songs?

  • yeah, that's my opinion.

someone thumb me back up please.

  • @detainedbassist they changed a couple of lines tho

  • Loved the Sisters for years still superb
