By far the greatest amount of state attrocities occured between 1980-1990, but even in that time, Apartheid crimes were pale in comparison with the crimes of communism, which was the ideology of choice of the ANC.

The integration of primative cultures into Western society is not something that can happen overnight. The vastly different cultures had equally vastly different social norms which was completely incompatible with each other. Black education was only introduced in the time of Verwoerd, which lead to the gradual westernization of the blacks. The same might be said for US segregation, if not slavery itself. Notwithstanding the obvious moral problem, black slaves were better fed and had better medical attention than 90% of the world in the 18th-19th centuries. And they weren't unrelentingly physically abused. It would be like smashing your own car, or destroying your fridge, or wrecking your expensive lawnmower. In many ways, they were an integral part of the white family. Things went downhill for blacks AFTER they were freed.

@heaty007 Blacks today must overcome the mental chains of slavery. During the Age of Imperialism, blacks were insufficiently developed to withstand exploitation, or capitalize on it. And Africa was rich in natural resources, including slaves. This isn't to say exploitation, slavery, etc. was right. But it happened, and none of alive today are responsible for, or victimized by that. Blacks today must reorient their culture to fully capitalize on modern opportunities. That's the challenge.

The fact that Josef thinks he would be better off as far as getting a job is concerned under Apartheid doesn't necessarily mean he agrees with racial segregation from a moralist perspective, he's just reflecting on how he found it easier to get a job under Apartheid than he does now (or rather 2008, although I doubt anything's got any better in the last few years).

Don't forget that apartheid didn't separate citizens racially but ethnicly as well. European Colonizers in Africa only also accepted those who were seen as close to the white race. When apartheid was over blacks who were accepted in white society were also layed off. Plus there were places that were not affected by apartheid racial laws. Some people still lived in peace. I don't think this guy being interviewed is an Uncle Tom. He sounds like he's just disillusioned. He was probably hoping that the end of apartheid would bring peace and prosperity for all, and since it didn't happen he feels betrayed. Read some African history: the Arabs and Ottomans had lucrative slave trades across North Africa and East Africa. The vastly different cultures had equally vastly different social norms which was completely incompatible with each other. Black education was only introduced in the time of Verwoerd, which lead to the gradual westernization of the blacks. Integration could not occur before the 1980's, and that is exactly what PW Botha attempted to do.

The same might be said for US segregation, if not slavery itself. Notwithstanding the obvious moral problem, black slaves were better fed and had better medical attention than 90% of the world in the 18th-19th centuries. And they weren't unrelentingly physically abused. It would be like smashing your own car, or destroying your fridge, or wrecking your expensive lawnmower. In many ways, they were an integral part of the white family. Things went downhill for blacks AFTER they were freed.

@heaty007 Blacks today must overcome the mental chains of slavery. During the Age of Imperialism, blacks were insufficiently developed to withstand exploitation, or capitalize on it. And Africa was rich in natural resources, including slaves. This isn't to say exploitation, slavery, etc. was right. But it happened, and none of alive today are responsible for, or victimized by that. Blacks today must reorient their culture to fully capitalize on modern opportunities. That's the challenge.

The fact that Josef thinks he would be better off as far as getting a job is concerned under Apartheid doesn't necessarily mean he agrees with racial segregation from a moralist perspective, he's just reflecting on how he found it easier to get a job under Apartheid than he does now (or rather 2008, although I doubt anything's got any better in the last few years).

Don't forget that apartheid didn't separate citizens racially but ethnicly as well. European Colonizers in Africa only also accepted those who were seen as close to the white race. When apartheid was over blacks who were accepted in white society were also layed off. Plus there were places that were not affected by apartheid racial laws. Some people still lived in peace. He was probably hoping that the end of apartheid would bring peace and prosperity for all, and since it didn't happen he feels betrayed. Many many people in Libya rely on Colonel Gaddafi for their jobs and survival however bad he is. Rapid, you're falling apart. Europe wasn't the only entity that engaged in exploitation. Read some African history: the Arabs and Ottomans had lucrative slave trades across North Africa and East Africa. West African kingdoms, such as Oyo and Mali, got very wealthy over trading and exploiting native populations, and often collaborated with Europeans.
On top of that, tribal wars in Africa were vicious, bloody and murderous. Africa was not a utopia before Europeans.
