Too many steps in making a simple sandwich. If you have the heat lower on the frying pan the cheese will melt and the bread wont burn. Then you can cut out the toasted oven. If you use less margarine it might help too. That's not butter.

If you were previously having problems with the cheese not melting and the bread burning, then you had the heat on way too high. The perfect grilled cheese is done in a pan that is on just over medium heat. High heat? Wrong. If you do it correctly, there's no need to use the toaster oven first. Trust me.
