  • I lived in CC my whole life, and we've had two of these. Anyone see the frog and the turtle rocks at :10? Lived there my whole lfie and never knew they were there.

Anyway, the spot where this video was taken was over near the airport, not the highest point, but a relatively safe one. Besides, they weren't out on the jetty like some people.

  • great video with the context of that rocky outcrop just off shore there. it really helps to put the event into some perspective.

  • my town,,ayyy

  • @greennpurple34 ikr haha. gotta love are tiny sucked up city!

  • What will people on the East Coast do...when the landslide accompanies the Canary Island earthquake/volcano? I have heard numbers as low as 300 ft. and as high as 3000 ft. surge waves.

  • There's no force here on earth nore powerful than NATURE!!

  • Tsunami sirens wailing means get the hell away from the water not stay and take videos

  • @tornadomatt1

well, if everyone did that youd have no tsunami videos to watch.

So many armchair criticsm who seek out these vidoes, then critisise the people involved for getting the footage.

  • @metafis I work for Sac city Fire dept and people that dont follow evac orders we have to go find there bodys and give them back to his/hers family that why I said that.

  • There were photographers in Japan standing in the middle of the tsunami, and even they were fine. These guys here are safe, the tsunami runup height isn't big enough to get them.

  • nampan PLATEAU

  • The real morons are the ones who don't realize that these people are up on a 12ft bluff, clearly out of the danger zone for what the bouys predicted.

Pathetic internet losers who will critcize anyone with the slightest sense of adventure while they themselves never truly "lived" a day in their lives.

  • @srhbca The problem is that 12' wouldn't be enough if you were in Japan. 100ft wouldn't be enough. So the worry was that the waves generated by this earthquake would still contain enough energy behind them to wash out the bluff. Fortunately the energy was greatly dispersed as it travelled through the ocean. Just wait for the Juan De Fuca to slide, it's a Megathrust 9.0+ magnitude producing fault along the Oregon coastline.

  • @srhbca But nobody never knows what force a tsunami is gonna hit with, or how big it's gonna be befor it reaches land

  • I can't believe everyone criticizing the videographer here for trying to get good news footage of a very rare event. You all sit on your couches and shout names at people who are out trying to do something. The hecklers here are the real losers.

  • So let me get this straight...you KNOW a tsunami is coming and instead of getting AWAY from the beach you go down to it to get footage...sounds reasonable no? This is natural selection at work folks...these people that filmed this are too stupid to live and breed...they just weaken the gene pool. Have at it retards!

  • lol sure... its pretty difficult to get laid meeting ppl on youtube but it happens

  • Too bad IT WASN'T a huge wave like in parts of Japan or HI, at over 25', would've loved to see these STUPID people... And this woman, Oh it's coming back in? like it's no big deal....

  • Too bad IT WASN'T a huge wave like in parts of Japan or HI, at over 25', would've loved to see these STUPID people...

  • WHEN the Cascadia subduction earthquake hits "the folks" videoing THAT tsunami WILL get washed away by THAT tsunami.

  • Wrong location. 16 boats sank in the harbor there. That was the place to shoot footage. Memo for next time.

  • That's a trip.....all the way from frickin' Japan......

  • @stephenjones102 AMAZING ISNT IT? and these folks are CRAZY!

  • @Longhornphysisist.... Stop trying to sound informed!!!! Shut the fuck up!!!!!!!!! Go teach an oceanography class if you want to TEACH!!!! Obviosly the dip shit who shot this video lived long enough to post on you tube. WHO FUCKING CARES if the camara man is swept out to sea? Cool video shot at safe distance for all to enjoy. These COMMENTS are a Tsunami of stupidity!!!!

  • thats so cool how you can see the reflected wave going back out to sea

  • @LonghornPhysicist I grew up in Crescent City, went through 3 tsunamis, and have taken multiple oceanography classes. I understand waves very well. Are you implying that it's not stupid for them to return to an evacuated area just to get a video of the tsunami coming in? I know of at least 4 people washed out to sea who would have something to say about your "Inverse square" bullshit. Don't talk like you know anything about this...

  • @booya155 haha yeah okay whatever. I'm sure you know better because you took a couple oceanography classes at a community college.

  • @LonghornPhysicist Oh yeah, that's exactly what I did. Right. It's abundantly clear by the position you're arguing that you know absolutely nothing about tsunamis so please, I could have taken an oceanography class in Kindergarten and still have a greater knowledge about them than you. Grow the hell up and quit trolling just for the purpose of starting an argument.

  • at least they are not down there trying to surf it , I heard of a few people that did try.

  • i liked it for the landscape

  • I'd be running away, jamming in my car, to get as FAR AWAY as possible by @5:20

seriously, great video . . . . but I'd rather use a much better equipment (some 12x optical zoom 1080p) and stand at few miles inward, in a much higher ground for this. No need to risk your life . . . .

  • NO respect for the oceans power

  • This is what you call Natural Selection. People that are to stupid to live. Sooner or later we will be reading about them while their family members grieve and then ponder law suits against the people that were responsible for keeping them safe...

  • why the hell are yall so close after being told a tsunami wave is coming in, what if that wave had've come over that wall or a rogue wave had sneaked up on you guys outta nowhere and washed your a**es right out to the ocean, lol

  • Wow, that is probably 5 times the height of what was seen in Seaside. Excellent spot to cover it. Looks like you were standing a good 10 feet above the surf.

  • or hold the camera still.... wtf

  • these people just had to b white..crazy white people these days..if an earthquake hits they would go tp the san andreas fault and wait for the after shock

  • Do these people take stupid pills?

  • Ok city slickers, YOU don’t know what you’re talking about. We were on a 20ft cliff. The cars driving to the right were 3ft. Were they in danger? It would have been blocked off. There was no place to park so not the only “idiot”. The person that died was on the beach. Would I have been there at 7am when it hit? NO. It was not 8ft at the shoreline. The only difference from normal was the surf went in and out within 8 min. You comments are amusing. From, the camera man.

  • @njmather I'm sure the police thought that they wouldn't have to since it's so damn obvious. But apparently human stupidity kicked in and the Police/Sheriff DID end up having to block off all of Pebble Beach Drive later in the day. Why do you think they would do that if it was totally safe?

  • Yeah @godfreyih, no foreigners did that at the Malaysian tsunami a few years back right?

  • That's what I call "confused seas". The waves did not know which way to go, and that sound, kinda like the sound a tornado makes: you don't mistake it for anything else.

If you want to see foolish people, watch all the toursits in Sumatra going out to look at how far out the see had gone: if I see that, I don't just go the other way, I RUN.

  • wow i cant believe the haters! this guy wasnt standing in the water or on the beach, he was on a cliff out of danger. i use to live in crescent city, if he wanted to be stupid and take video from somewhere dangerous to himself he very easily could have. great video, thanks for sharing!

  • @rtschaeffer Dude, had it come in just a couple of feet higher, these guys would have been soaked in cold water. 4-5 feet, still within the margin of error (we just can't predict these things and it also depends on the layout of each bay/beach), they would have been history. Now, WHY would anyone in their right mind take that kind of risk just to make a stupid video? Granted it's fun and interesting to watch, but next time zoom in from a nearby hill if you just have to record something.

  • @duerandaggi well I guess getting wet was worth it to them. if no one took risks you wouldnt have kewl videos to watch. could you imagine a world where no one took risks?? there are a lot more people out there doing far more riskier things to get kewl videos and its not like they were expecting a 20 foot wave. its far riskier to get behind the wheel of your car everyday then people taking videos of an 8 foot surge from a cliff above. to each there own.

  • Wow these folks rub shit in their hair!!!!

  • Staggering stupidity. And when the Coast Guards have to waste their time rescuing these idiots (as indeed had to be done during this tsunami event, and one man died in the water), we taxpayers have to foot the bill for rescuing such fools when we'd rather see our money spent rescuing people in real distress for which they themselves were NOT responsible.

  • @godfreyih Agree totally. How I wish a real tsunami rolls in suddenly and gobbles up these morons. Afterall, you could never tell from teh first surge what comes next. No wonder the world all over think americans are stupid.

  • @godfreyih My partner and I just stayed in Crescent City in a beach rental, along the same bluff they are filming from. The road they are on, has houses all along it. If the houses, or these people were in danger; the Coast Guard would have evacuated along this very populated area. The road is a well traveled main route along the ocean. It would have been closed, and traffic would have to take the evacuation route if there was danger. Do some fact checking before you get so bent man. Great City

  • I don't think that the cameraman was an idiot... If he wanted to go see the predicted-8-ft-wave, knew the risks, and chose to go where he knew he had a decent (15ft by approximation from the waterline) height to video from, then let him do it and just watch in awe at his video. Like pp said, we all clicked on the link to see the footage. Where was he supposed to take it from: inland? a cliff? would you have watched if he had?

  • Thanks for risking your life for YouTube enjoyment. Dang!

  • I fail to understand why some people here feel the need to lecture the cameraman filming the wave, given that THEY clicked on the link because THEY wanted to see it, too.

Really, that's textbook definition of the term "sanctimonious hypocrisy". Seriously, look in the effing mirror...

  • @themellster1 You fail to understand, you said it yourself, so TRY! There are hundreds of profesionals around the world risking their lifes for a picture or a video, they are called "Journalists", whoever cliks on the video is not necesarily aware that it was made by a clueless idiot. Whatching a video from the safety of home is by no means the same as to stand 3 feet away from such an unpredictable and dangerous event as a tsunami. This moron should at least have gone alone.

  • you guys are idiots, oh hey there is a tsunami warning lets all go to the beach. how dumb can you get. its amazing sometimes how dumb people really are and those are the people that dont deserve to live through things like this. shouldnt you be worried about your families safety instead o being an idiot and filming this

  • I know some of these comments are half joking and criticizing, but a guy did die yesterday trying to take pictures of the waves. Check The Daily Triplicate website. He got swept away at the mouth of the Klamath. Sad.

  • disrespecting the ocean gets you killed... you guys are insanely lucky it wasnt any larger. too many people think that a tsunami has to be 30 feet to be dangerous... a 5 footer will make you its bitch in a heartbeat.

  • I suppose if the surge had been a few feet higher you'd have been washed out to sea; but, since it wasn't and you weren't, thants for a fascinating and very educational video!

  • There's another video posted that shows from ebb tide to raging tsunami in less than five minutes. Be careful.

  • This is amazing. Wish I had been right beside them....

  • And Mr. Darwin smiles...

  • Are these people a being unsafe, yes to an extent but if you know the area they are at it is 8-10 feet down to the water. Could they have got swept out to sea yeah but they were a lot safer than most of you are thinking.

  • @2004armywifey I know the area, it's maybe 10 feet down to the water at high tide there. But before the waves hit, nobody knew how big they would be. They could have been anywhere from 4 feet to 15 feet. So considering most places evacuated were at a higher elevation than this, these people weren't too smart to stand here. They're just lucky that the highest waves ended up being around 8 feet.

  • You guys are pretty "brave" to stand there, when a friggin Tsunami hits the Coast. Cause once its there it´s too late to hide.

  • Crazy people! Thanks God they are alive!

  • Strangely this was more terrifying than some of the footage from Japan considering the distance from the quake site. Despite some of the judgemental tut-tutting there is nothing wrong with watching or recording these outrageous natural events.

Please remember to DONATE through you local Red Cross or do whatever you can to help the international response to these awful disasters.

  • Yeah i agree on the level of retardation on all these people...but thankfully there are people like this who go get video for me to watch in the safety of my own home! :)

  • I live in northern cali and I wish it would hit..... idiots

  • these people are just lucky that this was a 10-20 ft or they will be swept right off before they can even pick up their foot to run...i have no remorse for those who take this foolishly. they might not be as lucky the next time it happened again!

  • yea runnin away from it my ass you would of got swept out dumbshit

  • Eight minutes of panning left, right, left, right, left.... Must have trained for it by handling a fire hose!

  • china and guatemala had earthquakes yesterday right before japan, hawai had a volcano eruption las week, and like 2 weeks ago new zealand earthquake, may God be w us. amen.

  • @jennaflor you are such an idiot.

  • @bartyfarslar relax baby

  • @bartyfarslar why because im telling the truth? if u dont like God, then u are the one who look idiot by replying "u are such an idiot" because u are talking the time to be negative to urself.

  • I use to jump of those rocks right there off into the water when I was a little kid we would also get tons of rock crab there

  • Great video, but seriously, this was a very dangerous place to be, and they weren't alone (4:13) there were a few people there. Imagine if that water kept coming a little more, you all would be a memory right now. People drown in that water all the time when there isn't a tsunami surge. Glad everyone is safe.

  • a little brave and a little dumb. good footage though. fascinating to watch. my bf wanted to go to Santa Monica to "touch the Japanese water" and i told him hell no, no beach for him today. anyway thanks for risking your livelihoods to show something so totally fascinating. just do your best to not tempt fate again. ;)

  • Great video. thx

  • Sadly I have little remorse for people who go out to see these things then get killed. One less stupid person in the world - terrible I know

  • The term "Tsunami" means "Tidal Wave", which is not a wave as we can see it. But, if you zoom out to a much larger scale, the effects are the same but we can only see it in the form of a tidal "surge". The people in Japan were still reeling from the quake when the 10m Tsunami hit, they had no time to evacuate. The death toll will be staggering, when the mud settles. Sendai has 4 million population. Imagine driving and seeing it coming knowing there was nowhere to go! Yeah, "Imagine THAT!"

  • @mcmlxvi ur fuckn stupid thats like 300 yards away frm my home in CAL stupid ass

  • Hello people, they were on a bluff overlooking the ocean...completely out of harms way. They were not on the beach. Awesome vid :)

  • People always know that they are in absolutely NO danger right up until the point when they get nailed. No one EVER sees it coming. Having said that, adults can make their own decisions & we, the spectators, can entertain ourselves by talking tons of smack. Nice video. Questionable decision-making.

  • It is quite obvious that some of you don't know what is dangerous or not. I lived there for many years and where they were is not dangerous. Great viedo so lay off.

  • darkangelkitty...the dinosaurs arn't weeding out the slow ones anymore so instead we let them do stuff like this. Hopefully they won't be entering their genes into the pool shortly.

  • This was NOT dangerous all you people who actually think that your life would be in danger there during the timw they were there obviously are retared and shouldn't be talkin because you DO NOT have a clue what you're talking about.

  • @darkangelkitty13 If it wasn't dangerous why were 4 people swept out to sea and killed?

  • @MommaOkie actually, there was only 1 death.

  • @MommaOkie Those people were at the mouth of the Klamath camping and it's thought they hadn't heard of the warning. None the less, the guy that died was trying to photograph waves...

  • @darkangelkitty13 do you know what the word unpredictable mean? thats whay hundreds were killed in Japan ;)

  • @jennaflor I do and I also know how high the waves were and happen to be familiar with storms and the ocean,

  • @darkangelkitty13 Yeah we know how high the waves were...AFTER they hit. Nobody knew they were going to be 8 foot waves, so I think it's pretty damn stupid to be standing on this overlook when it's only about 15 feet above the water at high tide, don't you?

  • @booya155 I think its fine that's plenty higher than the waves and were you aware that they were 8ft but the tidal waves were lower then usual when it hit so not all 8ft made it to the shore. So it was more of a 4 or 5 ft wave damage.

  • @darkangelkitty13 All it takes is one wave getting over this berm to take all these people with it. The tsunami sirens were going and the Sheriffs evacuated houses at a much higher elevation than this, yet these people think it's safe to stand here? As an update, this WHOLE area where these people are at is blockaded by police and sheriff so nobody can get there. Weird for them to do that since you say it's totally safe?

  • @jennaflor so that is not being retarded. hundreds were killed in japan not necesarily because they are retarded.to be cautious is not to be stupid.to play smart with nature IS retarded.

  • obviously they knew they were in no danger. Great video thanks.

  • @sirdrinksalot1978 So by that logic, nobody would ever stand anywhere dangerous? Give me a break, we have at LEAST 1 person killed every year because they're dumb enough to walk out onto the Jetty when the waves are washing over it. This is a whole higher level of stupid.

  • Just think.... If you were buried up to your neck----> You could have drowned !

  • Comment removed

  • You guys are COMPLETELY retarded. People like this is the whole reason there are fatalities in tsunamis...Just want to go check out the beach when the water goes out and are too stupid to think about it coming back in.

  • @booya155 what a pair of idiots. Then again this is Oregon, what did you expect?

  • @mcmlxvi It's California dude.

  • @booya155 Well, 15 miles don't make them any smarter.Do they?

  • @mcmlxvi 15 miles doesn't make the stereotype any more true either. I grew up here, so your dumb comment applies to me too.

  • @mcmlxvi LOL you're the idiot, Crescent City is in California

and hey if it wasn't for idiots we wouldn't have videos like this one to watch.

  • @booya155 Word.

  • @booya155 How does them dying in a tsunami affect you in ANY way? What the fuck do you care?

  • Comment removed

  • @booya155 couldn't agree MORE...

  • dumbass!

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks for posting!

Did you go down and find any cool rocks or shells left in the aftermath? any noticeable changes in the beach?

  • Good job you guys EXCELLENT!!

  • Thumbs up if you think these douche bags making the clip deserved to have been swept out to sea for stupidity this not being able to infest the gene pool with dna

  • awesome video taken by complete idiots...

  • @teamdeadly awwwwwwwwwww .. were you scared for them??

  • This is incredible footage!

  • Awesome video you guys. Good job!!

  • Fascinating video - thanks for posting!

  • Man, I know this wasn't nearly as bad as what hit Japan, but you can definitely tell how powerful those waves were. How high up above the water were you guys?

  • @AuraHero This is a veiwpoint above Pebble Beach, about 10-15 ft above the water at high tide.

  • Smoke on the water

  • Great Vids keep em coming

  • Nice footy.

  • Nice job. Really captures the full cycle of a receding and oncoming tsunami very well.

  • Great footage! Thank you for sharing your video!!

  • nice video

  • WoW that is intense!! Your braver than I , I would not have stood there like that filming...

  • Thanks for posting your video. It's helpful to see the mechanics of the tsunami--it's far more complex than a single "wave" coming in [surfers take note!]. Today we've seen that these surges can ebb and flow a number of times.

The rocks that are "taller than I am" are a great reference.
