My apologies for flooding the comments. I think a progressivist teleology that hastily mocks attempts to criticize biotechnology really gets my goat because it ignores the vast historical evidence for even 'civilized' man to do vast evil. There's a dangerous arrogance in ignoring that. And in the case of GM seeds, this isn't a purely speculative argument by any means. Companies ARE abusing their positions BECAUSE there is so much competition and BECAUSE food is so basic to health and economy.
lets also not fall victim to the lies and deception that companies such as mansantos promote. if they're are safe ways to involve biotechnology into agriculture they need to be tested vigorously and over a long term we are only starting to discover the possibilities lets not rush this into the market for capitalistic and selfish reasons while disregarding the health and safety of ourselves.
I'm not suggesting that it would be prudent to forgo testing, I'm merely defending the principle of manipulating the genes of organisms to serve various ends.
I'm amazed by the opposition to agricultural biotechnology, especially when one considers the amazing realm of possibilities it presents. From modifying concentrations of specific vitamins and phytonutrients to increasing yields, we're in the midst of a revolution. This is something to be embraced, let's not fall victim to neo-Luddite sentiments.
Even IF GMOs were well studied, having a patented food supply in the few hands rich enough to wield the science isn't a recipe for strong autonomous communities, local independence, psychic strength, economic stability and individual liberty. It is this tendency towards technological rationalization that is infantile and primitive. What effect would an unlimited abundance have on us as mental agents? On virtue? On population growth no longer tied to a natural ecology? Think holistically.
Furthermore, if you really want to help our foreign brothers in poverty, then pressure the American government to get OUT of agriculture. Pressure them to stop subsidizing cheap grains, sugar, etc.., and many foreign crops will be worth more on the marketplace instead of being worth artificially less. Help them achieve true health and autonomy. It would also increase the likelihood of us getting higher quality, more natural vegetables and livestock and even lower the cost in the long-run.
Human population growth was decoupled from normal ecological constraints shortly after agriculture first emerged and the developed world has been dealing with relative abundance for at least 50 years. Virtually all of the seeds used today in Europe and North America are patented hybrids that are purchased directly from biotechnology firms.
These companies are incapable of abusing their positions due the incredible degree of competition within the market and the ease at which farmers can return to unpatented (and unpatentable) seeds if needed. I don't know how the availability of these seeds serves to compromise individual liberty, and economic stability doesn't hinge on impeding agricultural productivity.
Given the increasing rate of technological development, the rise of the robotics industry and automation in general, I'd say the prospect of a static economy is rather improbable. Things will continue to change at an accelerating pace.
As for crop subsidies, I couldn't agree more. They should have been terminated many years ago. Allowing foreign food producers to stand on equal ground would serve to stimulate economic growth in their respective countries in addition to many other benefits.
Economic stability always hinges on food. There are places in Africa which can't make money on crops because we flood the market with subsidized big-agro crops (leading to lots of waste). I recall Kissinger saying "control food and you control the people." That's why we must look ahead to the negatives that can result from a few companies monopolizing these products and edging others out of the market through the courts and halls of congress(see above). And we need more neutral studies for safety
Search 'gm seeds india' This first video that comes up has much to say about how sustainable, ethical agricultural practices have a lot to do with individual liberty, local autonomy, and economic stability. And as we move towards a more globalized, scientifically managed world, it's so easy to forget how the freedom to do real honest work on your own terms contributes to INTERNAL goods, not just external ones. What kind of PEOPLE, not just food, do such practices and technologies create?
I don't know that retarding gains in agricultural efficiency for the purpose of preserving "character building" occupations holds much weight against permitting automation to flourish while reducing food costs. I wouldn't even regard the matter as being a question of "if" or "ought" anyway. What is noble or respectable about labour, especially the lowly kind? Personally, I'd regard liberating humans from menial tasks as something to aspire to, not avoid. Which ethical system do you subscribe to?
I subscribe to an ethical system that takes into account classical conceptions of virtue, that appreciates how the ends don't always justify the means. I don't look down on people who do real work and would much rather do "lowly" work on a family farm than for a corporation like Monsanto which is using dirty legal tricks to privatize communal knowledge and seize control of products which don't belong to them. I think the freedom to work on your own terms does contribute to internal goods.
I subscribe to an ethical system that sees a world where a few people control the food supply as a bad thing. I think local autonomy and individual liberty are good things that contribute to self-mastery and psychic strength. They help make "selfhood" possible in the first place. I think a vision of the future that rests on unlimited abundance and leisure is a threadbare conception of what a good dignified life really means. I also think it's an infantile, faustian bargain.
I'm sorry such admittedly outmoded conceptions of the good life are the things of "lowly" workers and luddite pessimists to you. I can see you've got everything figured out.
I hope you'll watch the video series though and take other measures to educate yourself further on this issue. Thanks for responding to my comments:)
My ethics hold that when individuals and communities can't take care of themselves, then someone else is going to do it for them, and that means they'll have much less power and control over their own destinies. What I want to be "liberated" from are people who have too much ill-gotten control over my life. There is something very noble and respectable about being allowed to do the work necessary to take care of myself and be a good steward of our world--not dominate and lord over it.
In India GM-seeds are contaminating crops which are then seized by companies that own the patents. Farmers there are suiciding because they're so mired in debt from lawsuits. Recently proposed "Food Safety" bills could be used to levy draconian fines on small farmers who don't conform perfectly to each new rule and regulation. And there's nothing in the wording preventing individual farms from being similarly regulated. It's all in how the words are interpreted by current or future leaders.
You can just hope this economic crisis will screw the US up so bad to nullify their deleterious influence on the world, it would be a great relief for humanity world wide. I strongly believe that in the west we have retrograded in every aspect of humanity. The way we blindly worship science with religious fervor has already done this world way more damage than any other religion could hope to do. Chernobyl is bad enough but there are other catastrophes past, present and probably future.
Business is business. Right? The main danger of GMOs is, that they will extinct natural grown food. Once they have their dead seed established worldwide, no one could ever plant crop without the allowance and the license from monsanto. Thats where it starts.
Would you care to elaborate? Multicellular eukaryotes are susceptible to horizontal gene transfer only to a slight degree, rendering your scenario extremely impropable. Additionally, one shouldn't discourage the practice of modifying organism to better serve humans on the basis that one group has used the technology in a questionable manner.
So,you think everything that he said in an hour video is untrue? Come on man. Open your eyes. This company and also our government is corrupted to the core. They only are in it to get paid. This GMO causes cancer and other very fatal problems.
The presence of foreign genes/proteins does not imply the presence of carcinogenicity/toxicity. For instance, it's quite possible to select a gene that codes for a benign protein, insert it into corn, and consume that corn on a long-term basis without experiencing any deleterious effects.
apparently in mexico testing was done on native corns which have not been geneticly modified, GM crops are banned in mexico...but guess what?
the genes were found in the native corns... even if we ban gm crops now, we wont eliminate them. the damage is done. monsanto knows the profits are greater then any payout for lawsuits. so they lie to us all to make a buck
GM Food is more of a harm then a gain. The government is just defending it so that they can make money, teaching teens about how great GM food is. In the past, when there is no GM food, look at the cancer rate. Now, with all this weird GM food, 1 out of 5 people have cancer. I don't know why people defend for GM food.
GMO's are just the tip of the iceberg. The FDA recently granted approval for cloned meat to be marketed to the public -- without any requirement to be labeled as such. Time to either go organic or give up meat and soy altogether.
Good alternate sources of protein: wild salmon, organic eggs, beans, lentils, nuts and seeds.
Are you of the view that everything that is not "natural" is unhealthful, and/or everything that is "natural is healthful? Things that arise without human input are good? Human activity is unnatural/supernatural? What is that supposed to mean?
you put a lot of words in my mouth. no i did not say any of those, simply cloned anything is not natural. and therefore would require much testing over long periods of time to be declared even remotely safe. it may never be safe who knows.
I was inquiring as to what the significance of your comment pertaining to naturalness was, not placing words in your mouth. I think we're largely in agreement. Given the potential consequences I don't think an excessive amount of precaution and testing is merited, just enough to ensure a reasonable degree of safety.
This makes me so angry! how could they do something like that??! I am a fairly peace loving kind of person, but that totally makeme want to run a street rally with big signs, saying monsanto is EVIL, so are all these other corrupt food modifiers.... where is the world headed. P.S thankyou for you advice on foods that might be safer to consume.. for now.........
Boycott Yves Veggie Foods! I personally questioned them about their soy product and they lied and stated it's organic when in fact it's GMO. They expected me to believe that "organic" isn't mentioned on the packaging because there was no room left to print it. LOL!
As well, Yves wouldn't respond to a query from a consumer website compiling info on which companies use hexane (an explosive and toxic gas) to extract the soy oil from the plant. It's a clear admission of guilt that they do.
From what I understand.. organic refers to the way a food is grown (ie whether chemicals are involved) not it's variety or genetic make-up, however I get you point, if a food is GM it should be CLEARLY labelled as such
Im seeing a connection between monsanto and bird flu this all ties in with the chemtrails maybe now we seee where the bees are going if a cow would die a little bee from GMO pollen would die..People need to wake up all the crap in your toilitries to your food is making the drug pharma companies and monsanto rich but i have a feeling they have a more sinister side ..NWO scum they are,
@GLOBALRAPTUREdotcom - its also because the NWO have an agenda and thats to limit the population by making a high percentage of people infertile from all these toxins and in particular xenoestrogens, and also to limit life span from, average140,(see hunzas and other tribal communities) to a pitiful average in western society of 80..
@GLOBALRAPTUREdotcom People are waking up but the process is not so fast for everyone, anyway the truth cant be hidden, cant be stopped......its up to us to be awake, honest, present....help each other be more conscious.
Not all things which are food safety will people even care about if they think they get to drink a Pepsi and it won't make their butt fatter. I mean Aspertame, which is just poison.
Sugar isn't deadly. For diabetics, occasionally, which is for whom such foods were first intended. But now in order to stop gaining weight, we want foods that will kill us so we can be sexy.
People are nuts. Look who diet sodas are targeted to primarily to women. Smart women don't drink soda.
Consumers had to had at least the right to decide whether they want to BUY with THEIR HARD EARNED MONEY the GMOs food, monsanto is suing all sorts of small farms for LABELING that their milk or their corn doesnt contain GMOs or r-BGH!!! for Gods sake! how can that be good/right/fair?? only for profit? how much money is enough??? trillionaires?? how much is enough? Also, GMOs have not been studied correctly, if they prove to be safe, then be it! but the'yre not! substantially equivalent is a joke
Preach on brother, this GMO stuff is out of control and just sickens me. Without good food and water we have nothing. These bastards like Monsanto are destroying some of the most important things on this planet and their damage is rapidly spreading. You can't mess with the nature without their being major consequences.
Many people in North America don't even know what GMO means so it's good to spread the word as much as possible.
I'm sorry to appear immature and biased, I guess this issue has a very strong emotional charge, a soon to be nutritionist shouldn't be advocating GMOs as an answer to developing third world countries and world hunger/famine, there are being developed new alternatives ans sustainable organic farming practices, do a research on monsanto BT cotton and their deception on indian farmers. History repeats itself here, its all deception and lies. Monsanto lies, google for it. Its not your friend.
@ladystm: Using your own arguments, QUOTE: "personally i dont think GM foods are too bad, I believe things should be left natural but I also think if we create things like Golden Rice for mass malnutrition tackling, AS LONG AS IT HAS BEEN APPROVED GENETICALLY/HEALTH-WISE, its fine!! " EXACTLY the point there's been near to NONE peer reviewed clinical trials on the effects of GMOs on animals
whats wrong with GM foods if theyre just insect repellent? i live in the UK so we have strict laws on what can & cant be grown GM-wise.
we do however allow insect repellent corn, canola, cotton, soybean, which helps agriculture..
personally i dont think GM foods are too bad, I believe things should be left natural but I also think if we create things like Golden Rice for mass malnutrition tackling, as long as it has been approved genetically/health-wise, its fine!!
well yeah in terms of being insect repellent, but i highly doubt it will mutate in your body!
We eat soy (GM) products in the UK aswell, which have recently been allowed, for their insect repellence only, and i dont think theres been any incidences of mutations/reduced bowel health DUE to it.
Greenpeace and this guy base all their arguments on ONE piece of research from 1999 on rats, which was a from a GM POTATO, not soy..
Then keep eating GMO and making monsanto rich, it is already showing in your IQ, excuseme me but only a retard would say that GMOs are equal or better than the nature made. Also, keep drinking trans fat, refined flour, refined sugar, food additives, colorants, commercial farmed herbiceide/pesticide laden plants, GMO animals, closed range chicken. high omega 6-to omega 3 ratios, trans fat and aspartame/edulcolorants and coca cola and do the world a favor and get auto extinct.
i'd like to think my IQ is slightly better being in my 3rd yr of a Nutrition degree, and would make a rebuttal had you have had valid points and not been immature..as us scientists do, but carry on.. i dont see you contributing anything to 3rd world crises, its all good for us rich people to be choosy but they have no choice my dear
yeah, it's more of a shame on you then, a nutrition degree, and are against organic farming and are pro monsanto and GMOs?? how irrational is that! stay in school sonny, don't buy into multinational's interests. Do you think they work for your health? there's only one big word: P R O F I T.------>
im not denying that, i've looked into it too, and your right they are in in for profit, at the poorers expense i guess. its how the world works though, you may think it irrational but if they do make profit for it but still sort out developing countries' health problems (coz THAT costs too) then why not?
Coz they can hardly do it themselves, and yes its unfair that we make profit, but power overrules in these organisations over our small voices, we all know that
well yeah in terms of being insect repellent, but i highly doubt it will mutate in your body!
There have been numerous studies of GM foods which have had negative results. The GM industry has done an excellent job in not letting this information get into the public arena and when it does it has the complicity of the US media to further obfuscate and lie about the results. Most of the testing and "scientific" data we see is done by the industry for the industry, funded by the industry. Even more disturbing is the funding coming from the pharmaceutical industry. ASK YOURSELF WHY?!!!
Because so little scientific research has been done and what little there is is of such short duration we probably don't know just what these frankenfoods will do to us.We do know that Genetic modification is not an EXACT Science, there are too many unknowns, admitted by the scientists doing the research, for it to be unleashed on the human and animal and natural populations. The goal of GMOs is money and market control..saturation, not some altruistic, feed the starving world bandaid.
Unfortunately the GMO-industry weakened the European powers, too! Monsanto b4$tards have permission to test their evil seeds on our German soil! Our cattle are being feed as well with gmo-shit. We are loosing ground! Help us! USA YOU RETARDS! Take your evil b4st4rds BACK! Stop giving them more and more money which they use to conquer the whole world and to execute their eugenic agenda on us!
You don't know the whole story. In Europe there is a very agresive use of chemicals for fighting diseases in plants. Most of them are forbidden in USA, and they are manufactured in USA.
How do I know?
I know many people in Europe that are in agriculture.
The government is choosing what cancer they going to give you.
with social medical the gov. is interested in prevention, here the gnp improves the more treatments sold, more to tax. good for the exchange. One can invents in the pioson and the cure... I mean treat
to cure isn't profitable, and with the same wants behind medicine, the fix for this kills that.
If I learned anything from this video it's that GMFs should probably be reduced and restricted to laboratories for the time being, until we figure out more of the problems that they're causing in humans. Although, I think GMOs are too important to dismiss as ultimately deleterious to humankind. Research needs to be done, because despite what Mr.s Smith says, GMOs do seem to provide a good deal of promise in regards to the sustenance of humankind.
Well that would be the best. But our politicians are guided by greed, and they don't care for the diseases they are causing as long as they don't affront the consequences in their lifespans. Which worries me much more.
This is IMPORTANT INFORMATION! 2000 saw only 200 Million hecta acres of GM foods. Today there is 700 Million HA's world wide. The bees are dying. They cannot avoid the gm pollen. Infected bees contain EVERY DISEASE known to affect them. We have higher rates of obesity, lung cancer (non-smokers), and obesity before due to transegenic oils (GM modified). Our peanut butter contains GM rapeseed oil instead of peanut oil. (Canola oil modified). Please pass this link on!
I'm glad to see you anti-GMO. Keep on brother, keep on. Is there anything you would like to see from Jeffrey Smith, author of Seeds of Deception and his new book Genetic Roulette, do for you?
i clapped irl at the end :p

When we dont buy GMO, as in purchse, how will that sucessfully stop the foods eing grown and used?
I have been eating organic since 2000 and seen a lot of harder acess since about 2006.
I cant beat myself up for all of the times I can not find the organic though.
How about Walmart, I go there twice a week and have not bought any of their fruit in a year. The ones grown in Chile, have no value for the body.
Traveling over 20 miles once a week, has become worth it to get the organic

Furthermore, if you really want to help our foreign brothers in poverty, then pressure the American government to get OUT of agriculture. Pressure them to stop subsidizing cheap grains, sugar, etc.., and many foreign crops will be worth more on the marketplace instead of being worth artificially less. Help them achieve true health and autonomy. It would also increase the likelihood of us getting higher quality, more natural vegetables and livestock and even lower the cost in the long-run.
MusicByMichael 2 years ago
Human population growth was decoupled from normal ecological constraints shortly after agriculture first emerged and the developed world has been dealing with relative abundance for at least 50 years. Virtually all of the seeds used today in Europe and North America are patented hybrids that are purchased directly from biotechnology firms.
gunman806 2 years ago
These companies are incapable of abusing their positions due the incredible degree of competition within the market and the ease at which farmers can return to unpatented (and unpatentable) seeds if needed. I don't know how the availability of these seeds serves to compromise individual liberty, and economic stability doesn't hinge on impeding agricultural productivity.
gunman806 2 years ago
Given the increasing rate of technological development, the rise of the robotics industry and automation in general, I'd say the prospect of a static economy is rather improbable. Things will continue to change at an accelerating pace.
As for crop subsidies, I couldn't agree more. They should have been terminated many years ago. Allowing foreign food producers to stand on equal ground would serve to stimulate economic growth in their respective countries in addition to many other benefits.
gunman806 2 years ago

MusicByMichael 2 years ago 2
I don't know that retarding gains in agricultural efficiency for the purpose of preserving "character building" occupations holds much weight against permitting automation to flourish while reducing food costs. I wouldn't even regard the matter as being a question of "if" or "ought" anyway. What is noble or respectable about labour, especially the lowly kind? Personally, I'd regard liberating humans from menial tasks as something to aspire to, not avoid. Which ethical system do you subscribe to?
gunman806 2 years ago
I subscribe to an ethical system that takes into account classical conceptions of virtue, that appreciates how the ends don't always justify the means. I don't look down on people who do real work and would much rather do "lowly" work on a family farm than for a corporation like Monsanto which is using dirty legal tricks to privatize communal knowledge and seize control of products which don't belong to them. I think the freedom to work on your own terms does contribute to internal goods.
MusicByMichael 2 years ago 2

MusicByMichael 2 years ago 2

GanderSteve 2 years ago
Would you care to elaborate? Multicellular eukaryotes are susceptible to horizontal gene transfer only to a slight degree, rendering your scenario extremely impropable. Additionally, one shouldn't discourage the practice of modifying organism to better serve humans on the basis that one group has used the technology in a questionable manner.
gunman806 2 years ago
So,you think everything that he said in an hour video is untrue? Come on man. Open your eyes. This company and also our government is corrupted to the core. They only are in it to get paid. This GMO causes cancer and other very fatal problems.
luke94123 2 years ago
Let's avoid over-simplifications, shall we?
The presence of foreign genes/proteins does not imply the presence of carcinogenicity/toxicity. For instance, it's quite possible to select a gene that codes for a benign protein, insert it into corn, and consume that corn on a long-term basis without experiencing any deleterious effects.
gunman806 2 years ago
apparently in mexico testing was done on native corns which have not been geneticly modified, GM crops are banned in mexico...but guess what?
the genes were found in the native corns... even if we ban gm crops now, we wont eliminate them. the damage is done. monsanto knows the profits are greater then any payout for lawsuits. so they lie to us all to make a buck

Good alternate sources of protein: wild salmon, organic eggs, beans, lentils, nuts and seeds.
samsananda 2 years ago
Tell me, why exactly do you fear cloned anything?
gunman806 2 years ago 2
because its not natural.
kylekelly123 2 years ago
Are you of the view that everything that is not "natural" is unhealthful, and/or everything that is "natural is healthful? Things that arise without human input are good? Human activity is unnatural/supernatural? What is that supposed to mean?
gunman806 2 years ago
you put a lot of words in my mouth. no i did not say any of those, simply cloned anything is not natural. and therefore would require much testing over long periods of time to be declared even remotely safe. it may never be safe who knows.
kylekelly123 2 years ago

HUGHisGOD 3 years ago

" EXACTLY the point there's been near to NONE peer reviewed clinical trials on the effects of GMOs on animals

whats wrong with GM foods if theyre just insect repellent? i live in the UK so we have strict laws on what can & cant be grown GM-wise.
we do however allow insect repellent corn, canola, cotton, soybean, which helps agriculture..

kjygyrl 3 years ago
well yeah in terms of being insect repellent, but i highly doubt it will mutate in your body!
We eat soy (GM) products in the UK aswell, which have recently been allowed, for their insect repellence only, and i dont think theres been any incidences of mutations/reduced bowel health DUE to it.
Greenpeace and this guy base all their arguments on ONE piece of research from 1999 on rats, which was a from a GM POTATO, not soy..
ladystm 3 years ago

JOHNNYWADTON 3 years ago 2
im not denying that, i've looked into it too, and your right they are in in for profit, at the poorers expense i guess. its how the world works though, you may think it irrational but if they do make profit for it but still sort out developing countries' health problems (coz THAT costs too) then why not?
Coz they can hardly do it themselves, and yes its unfair that we make profit, but power overrules in these organisations over our small voices, we all know that

ASK YOURSELF WHY?!!!
nellieeeeee 3 years ago
Because so little scientific research has been done and what little there is is of such short duration we probably don't know just what these frankenfoods will do to us.We do know that Genetic modification is not an EXACT Science, there are too many unknowns, admitted by the scientists doing the research, for it to be unleashed on the human and animal and natural populations. The goal of GMOs is money and market control..saturation, not some altruistic, feed the starving world bandaid.

BShears83 4 years ago
Well that would be the best. But our politicians are guided by greed, and they don't care for the diseases they are causing as long as they don't affront the consequences in their lifespans. Which worries me much more.

Infected bees contain EVERY DISEASE known to affect them. We have higher rates of obesity, lung cancer (non-smokers), and obesity before due to transegenic oils (GM modified).
