@StoppingPowerInfo Well I guess a buck would be pretty scared :D You were pretty far away? I've never used buckshot before though I have a few Eley Kynoch SpSG shells lying around that I've never used either that seem pretty similar. I'm going pheasant shooting soon so I'm kinda going crazy about fullchoke at the min (I'm normally on quarter/half)
@wild50gunner That's crazy. If you mean "car doors like the one you have" I'll say "proally closer to true". If you mean "any car, anywhere on it" then that's wrong. No way on the engine block dude.
@StoppingPowerInfo correction as a genneral rule cars dont stop bullets yes there are parts of a car that will stop some kinds of bullets (engine block, drive shaft some kinds of tires) and yes some kinds of bullets wont nessesarily penetrate cars (shotguns shooting bird shot, frangible rounds, 22 short mabe?) but the vast majority of bullets will penatrate the vast majority of the car parts on most modern cars is what i was getting at as they say car doors arn't cover concrete is(sometimes) :)
some of them didnt go all the way through. I wouldn't hunt a large animal with that the door is just very thin galvanized steel and its not even a high grade of steel its just very soft mild steel with a zinc coating
@saikouxs100 Yes,that's the point of a choke. We're probably going to do a pattern test with various forms of buckshot later this month, so subscribe and we'll get to it ;-)
@TDHFilms97 haha i shot like 10 shots of buckshot and i had a bruise twice the size the buttstock of the shotgun. but i had a short barrel with a longer barrel i wouldn't have had that big of bruise. buckshot has white gun powder which is more explosive than regular powder which makes it a true power hourse lol
@jake51515 umm wow, i dont know where you got that information. the white powder you find in buckshot shells is not the propellant. it is the filler. it is basically used to fill the spaces between the pellets. the propellant is ALWAYS a black flacky material (smokeless gun powder- used in all modern centerfire and rimfire cartriges).
What are you talking about 'white gunpowder'? All smokeless i.e. modern powder is gray to light black in color. Those tiny little white balls mixed with the shot are buffer.
@jake51515 nope, a 3inch magnum buckshot shell with 3 3/4 - 4 drams of powder and an 1 1/2 ounce of shot will generate on average 2,800-3,000 foot pounds of energy
I've made a study of the Bonnie and Clyde ambush, and in speaking with an authority on the subject, he told me something very interesting: at least half the cops there were using 12 gauges. In fact one guy emptied his gauge after emptying his BAR.
Anyway this guy (an author) pointed out that though the driver's door is riddled with holes, if you check out the photo showing the car with its driver's door open, there are few holes that actually penetrated; those presumably were from the BAR.
Yeah, that wouldn't surprise me. It would entirely depend on the range (we were likely closer) and the type of shot used. I'm surprised by the BAR though, because I thought the BARs of that era were shooting 30-06?
What I meant to say was that of the many dozens of holes all over the outside of the door, the only ones that penetrated both sides were presumably from the BAR, in a tight overlapping group.
Also, the ambush was at close range; I can't recall exactly, but I believe it was less than 25 yards.
No, they just show the holes produced by the buckshot. There were several holes that weren't marked very well in the back, and I wanted to high lite just the new buckshot holes. If you look at the holes on the top (circled in red), you'll notice that they didn't penetrate.
My first thought is that it would increase effective range. In the extreme case, a slug is a "1 pellet" buckshot load, and from what I've read and seen, you're looking at a slug from 20 to 100 yards depending. But as for a 4 pellet load for example...I'm frankly not sure.
More pellets would mean they have to be smaller. And smaller pellets weight less, which in turns carries less kinetic energy. So yes, smaller and more pellets would lessen the range.. of course assuming they are all at the same muzzle velocity. Correct choke tubes would extend your range with the chosen ammunition.
1979 ford door.. dammit i was looking for a door like that one!

Sure -- about 20 yards and while it has screw in chokes, I took them out for this shot.
StoppingPowerInfo 3 years ago
what are chokes?
SanitySource 3 years ago
they are screw in pieces that go into the end of a shotgun (if applicable to that model) that modify the pattern distribution of the shot.

Did the 00 buckshot go totally through the truck door?
How far away were you when you shot the truck door?
ShotGunzKill 3 years ago
25 yards which is arguably the limits of buckshot. Two out of the 9 or 10 that hit penetrated both layers. All penetrated the first layer.
bluesxman10 3 years ago
From 25 yards, would it be able to totally penetrate through human flesh?
Thanks for the answer ;)
ShotGunzKill 3 years ago
Truck door.
BoltActions 3 years ago
9mm would probably do about the same as the.38,maybe a little more damage.
The .45ACP might tear the first layer of metal.
Dudtz 4 years ago
It stopped .38 spl wad cutters and standard load lead round nose.
The No.3 buck only did slightly better with some pellets tearing the first layer of metal abit.
Bird shot left dents.
Rifled slugs went through.
Some guys fired 7.62x39 at it,which went through all the way.
Dudtz 4 years ago
We're still talking about the tailgate right? I wonder how 9mm vs 45 ACP would do on it.
StoppingPowerInfo 4 years ago
no.3 buck from a 20 gauge wont go through a 1970s standard GM pickup truck tailgate.
Dudtz 4 years ago
I wouldn't be surprised if tailgates were built tougher consider they'll actually be "used".
StoppingPowerInfo 4 years ago
look up exotic ammo. Find "finned slugs" for 12g open bore. They will cut through car doors on both sides.
