  • This was my favorite version, too bad it only lasted 3 months.

  • I wouldn't mind if this appeared on GSN. It would look the best if they used the credit crunching format throughout all episodes as they air.

  • I think one of the biggest mistakes this version made was doing away with the "push = no win, no loss" rule. Imagine having $25,000 in the bank and your last card is an ace and then you bet everything that the next card would be lower than the ace, only for another ace to show up and you lose everything. I mean either keep the "push = no win, no loss" rule or have a new rule which states a push causes you to lose half your wager so instead of losing $25,000, you lose $12,500.

  • @Chenoholic88 Consider yourself lucky. This was the biggest mistake in Goodson-Todman, let alone in game show history. Next to NBC canceling "Super Password" in 1989.

  • @blaqice88

and perhaps the biggest mistake and the worst in the history of television.

  • My god, what an awful and boring bonus round! Without the Big Bet and cards to change, this is not Card Sharks IMO. The main game wasn't as bad, but 3 games for one bonus round COMPLETELY ruins it! *gags*

Thank god this version only lasted five months.

  • Your right it really sucks! JP's version is much better.

  • Pat Bullard seems too creepy! Glad I missed this run! Jim Perry was the best one, anyway!

  • I saw this when i lived in the dallas-ft.worth area. I used to think that card sharks was the only game show that could not be meesed up. BOY was i sadly mistaken.

  • They should've had seven cards like the first two incarnations. That way the top prize would be over $100,000.

  • we had this version here, but it was awful!

  • You were right about watching with caution, that was one of the worst game show clips I have ever watched.

  • @juliuscaesarrome

Just watched it again now and you're right, it was awful! Pat "It is!" Bullard can't act, he keeps saying "It is!" after every correct f**king answer! What the hell, man!

  • This version of Card Sharks was pulled from the airwaves on January 4, 2002 because of low ratings.

  • Syndication didn't help matters any because network affiliates can air it whenever they like, which means it could air at 3 AM.

  • @Chenoholic88 WUAB Channel 43.

  • @Chenoholic88

you're lucky if you never saw it! IT SUCKED!!!!

  • Dismal.... you mean Horrid! That is crazy! Money cards was never meant to be played like this!

  • This was "Card Sharlks" least liked version.

  • Let us put this into prospective. The Pat Bullard version of Card Sharks was the shortest of all Card Sharks series because it did not meet the expectations of certain Card Sharks viewers of the past. Although I am a fan of this show, I don't like this version.

  • It is... (Doing my best sarcastic impression of Bullard)...horrible!!!

  • The cards were fake and Pat Bullard didn't have any enthusiasm. No bells and whistles too. Where was Jim Perry when we needed him?

  • Those cards are a bit small aren't they

  • This version sucks... Jim Perry/Bob Eubanks versions were MUCH better!

  • This version does NOT suck!

  • Give me the original Money Cards any day!

  • The contestant's lectern was probably recycled when GSN came out with 'Whammy!'

  • it was the recycled practically the whole set.

  • Just watch the video.

  • I like it.

  • It WAS terrible! Butchered gameplay, cheesy lines--a total crap-fest!!!

  • This ill-fated version aired at 4 AM in the morning when I first saw this.

  • My CBS station also aired it in no-man's land...3 am.

  • 1:35 AM here.

  • I didn't know they brought this back . . . until now!

  • this was a pretty bad remake. One reason it failed is that it premiered the week of or week later of the attack on America of Sept. 11. Little trivia, Tammy was from Real World.

  • If they ever bring Card Sharks back please use the format from Jim & Bob's version not this one!

    This version is a joke!

  • How about Bill's?

  • I hasn't seen Bill's version til a couple of weeks ago. Yes his version would be fine too!

  • I love Card Sharks! I loved this version the most!

  • Why? It was so terrible! How could anyone like this disaster?!?

  • It is not a joke.

  • Whenever I saw the hostess turn the cards so slowly, I was honestly insulted. It was like they were desperately trying to stretch out the game to fill time. You could tell they tried to fit the game to Bullard's laid-back style and delivery, but the Card Sharks' biggest strength, element of surprise, can't work when the viewer can't get caught up in the moment.

  • The show is slower and the contestants are really lifeless compared to the old show.

  • Here's another change that I just realized makes no sense. In the previous versions of CS -- THE HOST is the one who flips the cards. Having him stand by the contestant takes some of the electricity/flourish/whatever out of the end game. And, quite frankly, I preferred the Eubanks/Rafferty version of the "Money Cards" where you could change one card PER LINE and the $200/$400/Big Bet progression -- it was a solid improvement over the Perry version. (Which wasn't all that bad to begin with.)

  • It is considered to be the WORST attempt at a revival EVER! It's even worse than "Match Game '99" -- that's saying a LOT!

  • I don't think the 1998 version was THAT bad. Then again, I only saw 10 minutes of that, tops.

  • OK, perhaps I AM being a little hard on MG98. (NOT '99 -- my bad.) But there were a LOT of things wrong with it. (Most notably the fact that -- regarding the answers -- ANYTHING was all right. But that took away some of the edginess of MG. If you CAN say anything, then there are no boundaries to push. I recall one question where ALL of the answers had to be 'CENSORED'. Now what fun is that?)

  • $52,000 can be won here (at least I remember; I do math bad mentally).

  • Because this revival was horrible; I still want to check out a full episode, despite that.

  • There's a list of game shows Fremantle ruined; I can't imagine what would happen to the Joker's Wild; it was THAT close to being revived last year.

  • The Joker's Wild was NOT from Fremantle/Media.

  • This is quite possibly the worst revival in the history of game shows, and that includes TTD

  • I know some are gonna disagree with me. But, I think Pat Bullard was a pretty good game show host. He was just handed a bad card with this show. No pun intended really.

  • @Bluetailvappy - I'd agree w/you there...Pat really wasn't bad, given what he had to work with, and was one of the few saving graces of this version.

  • tammy is from the real world 2nd season.

  • how freemattle botched this game show is beyond me. i mean come one line of cards between two players, having to earn the right to change a card, and bad hidden camera clips?

this wasn't card sharks, it was candid camera with bad card tricks.

  • AYE!

  • Fremantle did ruin Match Game, Norm Mc Donald is doing that show. The man is not funny.

  • AYE!

  • AYE!

  • Fremantle's really done it this time. They've fired Roger Dobkowitz!

  • I bet Mark Goodson is wondering what the hell did you do to my game that I created. I would hate to have my name mentioned with this crap

  • ...except it should actually be either Chester Feldman or Johnathan Goodson (accounts vary) that would be saying that, as the game was created by either one of those two, not Mark...

And as much as this version of Card Sharks was terrible, IMO the Money Cards round was the best part. Unsurprisingly, it's also the part that's closest to the original format...

  • Yes, it was syndicated. Only in selected markets.

  • this host is terrible!

  • I'd agree with you here, but the botched gameplay was worse. I actually didn't mind his performance on Love Connection, cause at least on that show the gameplay wasn't severly butchered. What about you?

  • I thought chuck woolery was the only host from love connection? I'm just trying to remember since I was only around 4 or 5 when that show was on...and what I see from the reruns. I agree with you on that one though

  • What year were you 4-5 YO?

  • It was '89-'90, that's when love connection was on...at least from what I saw..I was born in '85 and now I see all these old school shows now that I'm (almost) 23. it's crazy

  • Jim & Bob's version of Card Sharks were great. This version sucked big time. No one could save this. We know why this didn't last.

Hopefully Fremantle doesn't screw up Match Game coming back sometime in 2009.

  • @tommy76tx AMEN!

  • Jim Perry made Card Sharks exciting... the way he would whip those cards around, it was genuinely exciting. Not like this lazy format.

  • Why must people mess with a good thing? Card Sharks is a classic game that shouldn't be screwed with.

  • I got so psyched when I found out about an updated version, then I saw this abortion

  • Pat Bullard's version sucked big time. Not like the Jim Perry and Bob Eubanks versions. (If only Jim didn't retire...)

  • Jim Perry couldn't even save this version. They really messed this up. They should've left it the way it is with each contestant having their own set of cards. And they should've kept the Eubanks verison of the Money Cards round (IOW, they could win a car).

  • I agree with you. Long live the Classic Card Sharks!!

  • @gshowguy Don't forget Bill Rafferty who did the 1986 syndicated version.

  • YIKES!!!!!!!!!!!! no big BET!!!!!!!!!!

  • No "big bet"? Yikes...

  • actually it was he just never brought it up

  • Fremantle should have burned to the ground for this bastardization of "Card Sharks". Period.

  • No! How EVER would we live without American Idol, Karn FF, Temptation, and soon, The $1,000,000 Passamid? ;-) ;-) ;-)

(to be fair, we do have O'Hurley Feud though, and TPIR...)

  • "The $1,000,000 Passamid?"

  • ...aka Million Dollar Password.

  • oh and not to mention, this show seems cheesy and somewhat cliched as hell to me as well.

  • ...the rules of which make it essentially Pyramid without the pyramids. We shall see if it works out though.

  • It ain't gonna, trust me. The password is: ABOMINATION. When will Fremantle learn?

  • It's not quite THAT bad -- but it's NOT "Password". As I have stated before, it's more like "Million Dollar 'Lightning Round'". Fine for the end game, but where's the strategy of outTHINKING your opponent -- you HAVE to do that when you are both playing the same password.

  • I saw it used for a tiebreaker.

  • You are correct, sir. "Classic Password" -- as they call it -- IS used for a tiebreaker. It's ironic, the first time they ever referred to it that way was during "Password All-Stars" -- if you won "Elimination Password", you played "Classic Password". (And as complicated as that version was, it's STILL better than MDP.)

  • Well, some people, include me, say otherwise.

  • We will just have to agree to disagree on this one. I like the strategy that's REQUIRED when both teams are playing the same password. And in MDP, it's simply not there.

  • Good point. Really, I find that a lot like Pyramid.

  • Funny way to describe Million Dollar Password, man. Funny! :-D

  • The perfect score for this card sharks is $51800.

    William.

  • And this is the only time you'll hear "this Card Sharks" and "perfect" in one sentence :-)

  • oh.

  • and also, did the wagers have to be in $50 increments?

  • Those a days were multiples of 100.

  • I just bought a CS home game, and it has this show's logo, but it plays like the original! This set was pathetic, I didn't like the main game play (Clip Chips???), but I would watch this show if it came on today!

And why didn't Jim Perry host it???

  • 1. Jim retired in the early 90's.

    2. What about Bob Eubanks or Bill Rafferty?

  • Would he want to?!!?

  • The show wasn't bad, just not card sharks. Just another card game.

  • i wouldve ran the table .... $51,800

  • me too. The cap might have been $50,000 though. Not sure. On this show, it always seemed to me that the cards were NOT random. In fact, in one clip, they show the giant deck being shuffled before an inspector. The way it was done is that the shuffler took the big deck, cut it, put one half on the left and other on the right, then alternately stacked them in the middle. If the deck started out with all the high cards on top and all the low cards on the bottom, then when cut all (continued)

  • (continued from before) then when cut, all the high cards would be on one side and all the low cards on the opposite side. Then when alternately combined in the middle, the result would be high,low,high,low,high,low.... which fits the pattern that will give the best results! On this show, they could make it very EASY for the contestant or very IMPOSSIBLE to win without even technically cheating.

  • Drinking anything with caffeine still would not wake me up enough to watch this version of the show. How did this version even make it to air anyway?

  • At least the set was nice. I think that's the only good thing I can say about this show.

  • A very cheap looking set, too.

  • They carried most of the set over to Whammy! The All-New Press Your Luck.

  • the same studio that also taped Vs. and Sports Geinuses before this disaster went on the air.

  • @TVLubber

That's because both shows were done in the same studio.

  • "$700 on the bottom, $700 in the middle, and $700 on top." Why does that sound so eerily familiar?

  • Worst Version Of Card Sharks Ever!!!!!!!!

  • Yes, this was terrible. They changed stuff just for the sake of changing stuff. It could have been worse. The theme was passable compared to the original, which makes it pretty good. And they actually had the "This is Gary Kroeger speaking..." part, which even The Price is Right has messed around with recently. But all in all, this is basically sheer crap.

  • This version of Card Sharks always made me wonder if someone at Fremantle was taking cues from Richard Kline on how to revive a game show. Lousy host and a messed with format, sounds like something that happened to a couple of B&E shows that were revived in 1990.

  • No. This was WORSE. Even The Joker's "Game of Definitions" Wild was closer to the classic format than this. TTD90 wasn't too different from the Wink/Caldwell era, just the host wasn't too good, and there were many cheesy elements (RAPPING DRAGON~!).

This was NOT Card Sharks. Only calling high/low on cards was the same, and even that was drastically changed (ONE row, where you can do nothing and win????)

Thank God GSMarathon redeemed this, despite Ricki and the celebrity players.

  • 3 words to describe this revival: JUST PLAIN SUCKS. No wonder it only lasted 3 months. Not to mention the cycle was rerun-abused through the summer of 2002.

I would never recommend GSN acquiring that series. EVER.

The Bob Eubanks' version is far better than that piece of junk, IMHO.

  • What do u mean by "rerun-abused"?

  • "Rerun abuse" is a term coined by online buddies of mine on the GSN forums, and it means the same cycle reran over and over again to death. And death is what happened to that crap we call Card Sharks 2001. I'm just glad GSN doesn't air it, and I certainly hope they never do.

  • Yes, JonSea, this show is a piece of shit. It could have been decent if they hadn't messed up the rules and stayed faithful to the original two. Don't worry, I highly doubt it'll be on GSN, because there aren't even enough episodes.

And don't release it on DVD, either! If you wanna put Card Sharks on DVD, then let it be one of the classic versions!!!

  • With either Bob Eubanks or Bill Rafferty as host.

  • Did u think Pat Bullard was a terrible host?

  • Yeah! If that weren't enough, he did a late 90's version of Love Connection.

  • I remember that one. I used to watch it every Friday night @ midnight...good times.

But I didn't think that one was too bad. I mean, it wasn't that much different from the original IMO. What could be the differences?

  • on 'Card Sharks' with Jim Perry. It was so much different, the contestant returned for the next show.

  • For those of you that didn't know about this about Pat Bullard, guess what: 8 years before he hosted the revival of "Love Connection," he hosted one of two terrbile Summer 1990 (that were produced by of all companies Barry & Enright Productions) GS's called "Hold Evertyhing!" That's right, Pat Bullard hosted a show called "Hold Everything!" in 1990. It was paired alongside another horrible Summer 1990 Barry-Enright show called "All About the Opposite Sex," hosted by David Sparks.

  • good host, but nothing like it when Jim Perry hosted.

  • Oh yeah, one last thing (can you tell I have a lot to say about this show?). I doubt it'll make it to DVD, as BCI thankfully sticks with the popular versions of shows. That said, I hope we get at least a Perry set in the future, though they want to use celebrity game shows first, it seems.

  • Given that they've tapped the Pearson/Fremantle library in recent times to get TTTT00, Flannel Feud, and now O'Hurley Feud (and given that we've only had 2 seasons of that by the time it hits GSN, would threats of rerun abuse really stop them?), someone needs to infiltrate their offices and hide the tapes of this. And MG98. And Anderson FF. NOW. And I mean "Unsold Atari 2600 E.T. copies in the desert" hiding :-)

  • (Sidenote: Why DO they call Karn FF the "Flannel" Feud anyway? Is it a Home Improvement reference?)

  • This is the worst Card Sharks revivals of all times! Period! Because the gameplay was changed from the previous versions. Such as in the main game, there's no ability to freeze and also there are no returning champions and no car games.

  • I agree very much with u, cbaker. The idea of no returning champions is total fuckin' bullshit. What the hell were they thinking?!?

  • How did she do at the Money cards?

  • Not bad,$21,000

  • If you watched the video, you'd know how she did.

  • ONE OF THE WORST GS REVIVALS EVER MADE! PERIOD! Pat Bullard, the host on this version doesn't do anything but stand around and says lame things. Well, at least Pat Bullard didn't say "I'M A NICE GUYYYYYYYY!!!" on this clip. But the "Major Wager?" Wtf?!?!

  • Major Wager = sounds like a Joseph Heller novel character.
