@BigBallsOfFarly Its kind of hard to rate these types of videos. The people who disliked the video didn't like the fact that the Challenger exploded and 7 people lost their lives( not that the people who liked the video did of course)
I was in first grade when this happened. We didn't get to watch it live in the auditorium like the older kids did. We came back from recess and sat cross-legged on the carpet. Our teacher said "The Challenger exploded."
P.S. I know the orbiter did not technically explode.
My dad just told me about this is Soooo sad he was 12 when it happend he was watching and when it blew up his class was silent for the rest of the day
I wached this live on CBS. It was the most hyped and anticipated launch getting lots of media attention almost a year before actual liftoff. just when I saw the blast and the two separate SRBs firing in all directions and the falling debris I knew the astronauts were dead. It must have felt very similar for the people who built and lanched the Titanic ocean liner in 1912 which met a similar fate.
"Result of rapid deceleration"?? No, it wasn't. A sudden cross-wind set in motion the chain of events, not a sudden deceleration. Where on earth did you get that idea from? Watch 'Seconds From Disaster' for the full explanation of exactly what happened.
"Explosion" actually caused by rapid deceleration? Where did u get that fact? All I've ever heard was, plume from failed o-ring breached liquid hydrogen tank, that failed and the thrust pushed it into the intertank/lower liquid oxygen tank, and rotating right booster crashed into the liquid oxygen tank and the released propellant ignited. U can actually see that process happening on video.
I remember this like it was yesterday. I live here in Florida in the Tampa area. It was a cold clear morning that day and you could see the vapor trail from here.
I remember watching this in my classroom as a kid. I cried for a couple of days over this. I had always wanted to go into space until.... RIP CHALLENGER CREW, 25 YEARS LATER....
Does anyone know what would have happened to the flight if Challenger had not gone full throttle when it was meant to? Would it have performed a sub-orbital hop (as they say) or would it have spelled trouble for the crew? Sensible answers, please.
@roystonsaxon Some people have theorized that they could have actually made it into orbit had it not been for very high cross winds hitting them on the way up. They believe there was an oxide buildup over the o-ring that had malfunctions that was plugging the hole preventing the SFB from burning into the external fuel tank, and that the winds broke it off. Had the tank not exploded they would have been fine.
if you kept up with current events as well as you seem to do for something that happened almost 30 years ago, you would know about Obama handing over our most valuable anti-missile technology to the Russians. He's pretty much handing over information about the key factor that kept from the development of a stronger communist force, back in the days of the Soviet Union, to Russia, a country strongly affiliated with communist countries (i.e. Iran, North Korea, and China)
a bunch of dudes got into a rocket and launched themselfs and a few thousand tons of highly explosive fuel into the sky and something bad happened? they should expect to see this every single shuttle launch and get suprised when they make it, and not the other way around
I remember watching this live.. in a classroom in the sixth grade... we were all excited to see the first teacher going into space... I remember all my class mates being so sad for a long time after.
Jeez, I cannot believe this will very soon be 26 years ago. I still remember it like it was yesterday. I was only 10 years and 2 days old. Much respect to the explorers of our world.
@20MOJO20 - my son turned 11 the day before this happened. He, too, has vivid memories of this day. This was the first event of his life that had that "I'll always remember where I was when I heard about this" feel to it. Prayers going out to all those who were touched by this disaster all those years ago! God bless all of you -- and those who went on -- going where no man had ever gone!
@twistedyogert They almost certainly did not die instantly. It is estimated that they survived all the way to the ocean impact. At least two of them survived the initial explosion, as their life support jackets or something like that were activated in the seconds that followed.
hey no dis respuct but how did they died the people their was dumb if some one say dont go u would not c my white ass on there i would have been the first mother fucker out of their
@tnp963 Wow. I'm sorry but you really did just "dis respuct" the people on that ship. They were highly trained scientists and far smarter than you will ever be. They were not fully aware of the flaw in the design of the O-ring that lead to this tragedy and if they were they would not have launched. Also, there is no chance we would see your "white ass on there" because I doubt you even have a double digit IQ. At the very least just look it up on Wikipedia instead of asking us.
The crew of the Spaceshuttle Challenger were true heroes. They put their lives on the line - and lost them - for the greater good. For something bigger than themselves. I am especially humbled by what they did, because I could never do it.
@ohaiitsshhhharris you said 3 days ago, "The crew of the Spaceshuttle Challenger were true heroes. They put their lives on the line - and lost them - for the greater good. For something bigger than themselves. I am especially humbled by what they did, because I could never do it." Are you out of your mind? True heroes? What the **** is wrong with you? They were going on a space mission, things went wrong and they died. Heroes? HEROES? Be careful with you who call hero.
thats just sad my sis one of the 7 was a teacher mrs. mcalaffin won a trip to it and she died on that spae ship the same thing almost happened in 2002
@mheinrichs1974 Yeah, it was fourth grade, the pricipal rolled in one of those 30' tv's on the four wheeled cart. When I got home, my mom was crying. Never thought it would hit me years later. We had something to be proud of back then, now just facebook.
The "major malfunction" guy was probably only reading data from a screen, not actually watching the rocket. So from his point of view at the time, maybe the only thing that went wrong was the communications went down. Anyway, he's a professional, they don't tend to freak out even if a disaster occurs, because freaking out wouldn't help anything.

this video is s fake because one if it exploded in air like that why did the news reporter sop talking? and 2 they said the accident happened when it was comng back from space not headig towards it
@CaptainSn0wMan You need to get your facts straight before you call something "fake". I can see where you got confused though. You are thinking of the Columbia disaster.
@CaptainSn0wMan for real ? Tell that to the families . ah, google Shuttle Columbia , that was the one that had an accident returning to earth, not challenger.
@CaptainSn0wMan You dick! go fuck yourself you are insulting America and all those families that watched that..next time pick up a fucking book and read through on this material before you comment shit like this ever again...
So, all that wreckage collected was "fake"? And in 1986 they had the CGI necessary to create a fake shuttle explosion? And not to mention the crew, namely the first non-astronaut on a space mission, Christa Mcauliffe, were all "fake"?
As for the reporter stopping... I was in a classroom watching this live and the room went silent. I bet it was the same in news studios as well. Sometimes you just don't have the words for what you're seeing.
One of the saddest ever days in my life.

Conspiracy theorists are a joke.

@CaptainSn0wMan Sorry bro, but you have this mixed up with the Columbia disaster.

@CaptainSn0wMan I remember watching this when it happened. It's not fucking fake. Learn your history before you show your ignorance.
