i dont think that richard is actually an other at all, i think he has been on the island since its creation, maybee he is a neutral party that the others respect and that is why they protect him and give him a big say decisions concerning the island, why doesnt he ever age is he some kind of spirit he may even be the islands physical form maybee some kind of ambassador of the island, jacob or the black smoke. i know these theories sound rediculous but just think about it.
