Continued. Even as late as 1972 on 173 St. across for the Highbridge Pool, most of our neighbors were white....Greeks, Jews. Actuaaly, the apartment my father got for the family was one where he rented a room from a Greek man. It just seems like the current crop of residents dont care as much for their neighborhood. Whether they are Dominicans, Blacks, Haitian or any other Latin ethnicity, they have turned the neighborhood into something that must remind them of the homeland. Dirty and NASTY!

I emigrated to NYC in 1972 and lived on 173 St and Amsterdam and on 177 St. and Audubon until I left the area in 1982 whwn I joind the Marines. I attended P.S 115 and INwood Junir High School 52... 204 St and Academy.

I feel such sorrow knowing what Wahington Heights used to be and what it has become. I left NYC and never looked back. I still have family there and when I do visit once or twice a year, I cannot wait to leave! So noisy, dirty, rude and such nasty people.

WOW!! these pictures are amazing the streets of washington heights were actually clean..lol A close relative of mine that lived during that time period said that everyone in the neighborhood no matter what your ethnic background whether you were Greek,Italian,Jew,Irish respected you and it was unity. I could tell you I live in Wash heights and that respect and honor is missing and some parts of the nighborhood streets are trashy I wouldn't want to raise a family here.

Now people might want to the point finger and say the reason why a lot of ethnic groups left wash heights is becuase of dominicans well that's not entirely true because when you come this country you wanna own a house not an apartment that's the American Dream that's why Greeks, Italians and other groups left the neighborhood they moved up in the social ladder and pursued the American dream.

Beautiful pictures. I never would have imagined it looking like that. Times have changed so much everywhere not just in the heights. I remember my non Dominican friends, who still lived in the neighborhood, telling me that their parents talked about changes. I had never seen pictures though. Those were more innocent times.

They moved up from Chelsea in lower Manhattan to Harlem eventually. From what my people tell me, Harlem at one time WAS IMMACULATE and people were poor and working-class but had CLASS.
