... I dont believe she is doing that out of selfishness, but out of tue love for her child... she realized that it WAS selfishness that was driving her in getting custody... then it stroke her that her child's best interest was in staying with his father... and she had the guts of doing what was right at last... and something else: has nayone has managed to watch this scene without tears in the eyes?
I failed to see her as a villain in this movie - her walking out was bad, but his 13 months or whatever hardly gives him the full rights to him - the smile at the end when he wins him back almost has a sinister victory for some kind of patriarchal society! It unsettled me - but it's a wonderful movie!
Streep plays a great villain in this movie, I've never viewed her giving the boy to Kramer as a gesture of goodwill, but rather as a bailout of parental responsibility. She is incredibly self absorbed, and realized that she didn't want to spend her life caring for anyone but herself.
I wonder if anyone noticed that Meryl is pregnant in this scene. She said in an interview that in this scene she was very pregnant and that that's a good way for an actress to get a close up! Lol
Such an amazing actor, and she doesn't overdo it. It's like, she doesn't even have to say anything, just the subtle nuances of her face alone gives off so much with little effort, but I'm sure it's not EASY; she makes it look easy, though. When I watch her in any role she does, I'm thinking, "this is who she really is." I don't see her as acting.
That's a great quality to have as an actor, to make the audience forget you're just playing a role. :)
One of the most incredible closing scenes in the film industry - elevator door closes, fade to black . much deserved oscar wins for both Dustin and Meryl
I'm sometimes terribly hard on other actresses that everyone fawns over but it is Meryl's fault because, like so many of you have stated already, she is so BRILLIANT (and I think that word is overused but not in describing Meryl). SHE is an ACTOR and a PHENOMENAL one at that!!!!
Meryl Streep is the greatest! She's just brilliant in everything she does. And she has this warm personality, and you just can't help but admire and adore this woman. Truly amazing<3
Hoffman previously did a movie with Benny Hill. Hill was considered funnier than Monty Python by a UHF station (WLVI TV channel 56 in Cambridge, Ma) running both! I agree! And about MP--------combine "Exodus" and "international" and ".com".
I can't believe how much people fight on youtube! And on videos that have nothing to do with race, politics or religion. You people must always have to be right, I'd hate to be married to ya!

Why don't you s**k her c**k if she turns you on that much? Heaven knows she needs it as no self-respecting man would. I repeat: Meryl Streep was one fugly hag, and she has only gotten worse with age.
The only ironic thing is that you just made a ridiculously unfounded judgment about me by saying that my judgment was unfounded. The same irony was to be found when you asked "if you hate her so much why did you take the time to comment" at the same time as you were taking the time to comment back at me for saying something you didn't like.
To say that because she donated to a charity that somehow helped you out means that Streep personally saved your life is moronic. The odds that the money used to help you came from her are very slim, not to mention that she had no say in the matter even if they were. The charity helped, not the actress. Trying to equate goodness to a person because they took the easy way out and donated a small fraction of their wealth for better PR is ridiculous.
I love Meryl Streep she is awesome and the most humble person in the world. She is always looking for ways to help people and I am glade she donated money to save ur life. Meryl Streep always makes my day and I find myself everyday just looking at these videos because she puts me in a great mood!!!
This is my favourite acting moment of Meryl Streep's. Everything she does in this scene is revealing; not just the crying but the way she slightly glances elsewhere, her crumbling body language before she's embraced by Dustin Hoffman, her smile, a melding of courteousness and mild shock, when he compliments her, etc.
My second favourite would probably be "The Choice".
Sophie's Choice...is by far, in my opinion, the epitome of fine acting...everyone this woman touches is golden, she is a wondrous actress and my favourite of all time!
About the comment above, it wasn't me. Ugh, some people. Ha, she's the most amazing actress ever, and I love her more than anyone else in the world. This just goes to show you that you can not believe everything that you read. Psh, whatev. Meryl rules all. The End. Oh, and go JoAnna.
proud of her?! ... um...the usage of such a phrase suggests you know the person personally or had a hand in the product you are commenting on...so...why are YOU proud of her?!
I read that those last two lines were unscripted. It was pure Meryl & Dustin being themselves, not acting. Meryl Streep was really asking Dustin Hoffman how she looked, not Joanna asking Ted. Pure brillance. 5 stars for both.
Yes they adapted the movie from a book and the writter or director didn't know how to finish the movie so Meryl was given the chance to write the scene when they r in court. Good job in writting the scene to Meryl You are the BEST!!!
In most cases, the mother would win custody of the child, and take him, and the father would be out of luck. But if I were that boy, I'd rather go back with the mother. At least, she probably wouldn't try to make me eat that yucky food that the father served. hahaha.
Is this at the end? This is the only movie of Meryl's that I haven't seen yet, I NEED to go and get it. My theater director knows I love Meryl and one day he told me that "I think it was on Dustin Hoffmins Inside The Actors Studio...where he said at the end of Kramer Vs. Kramer Meryl asked 'How do I look?' And Dustin responded and it was totally unscripted.' So I'm guessing this is the part? Did anyone else hear that?
you're correct...this is the scene Hoffman was referring to indeed. I remember my first time seeing this movie in '79' I think it was...and the poignant ending really touched me.
