I failed to see her as a villain in this movie - her walking out was bad, but his 13 months or whatever hardly gives him the full rights to him - the smile at the end when he wins him back almost has a sinister victory for some kind of patriarchal society! It unsettled me - but it's a wonderful movie!

Streep plays a great villain in this movie, I've never viewed her giving the boy to Kramer as a gesture of goodwill, but rather as a bailout of parental responsibility. She is incredibly self absorbed, and realized that she didn't want to spend her life caring for anyone but herself.

Such an amazing actor, and she doesn't overdo it. It's like, she doesn't even have to say anything, just the subtle nuances of her face alone gives off so much with little effort, but I'm sure it's not EASY; she makes it look easy, though. When I watch her in any role she does, I'm thinking, "this is who she really is." I don't see her as acting.

That's a great quality to have as an actor, to make the audience forget you're just playing a role. :)

This is my favourite acting moment of Meryl Streep's. Everything she does in this scene is revealing; not just the crying but the way she slightly glances elsewhere, her crumbling body language before she's embraced by Dustin Hoffman, her smile, a melding of courteousness and mild shock, when he compliments her, etc.

I read that those last two lines were unscripted. It was pure Meryl & Dustin being themselves, not acting. Meryl Streep was really asking Dustin Hoffman how she looked, not Joanna asking Ted. Pure brillance. 5 stars for both.

Yes they adapted the movie from a book and the writter or director didn't know how to finish the movie so Meryl was given the chance to write the scene when they r in court. Good job in writting the scene to Meryl You are the BEST!!!

Is this at the end? This is the only movie of Meryl's that I haven't seen yet, I NEED to go and get it. My theater director knows I love Meryl and one day he told me that "I think it was on Dustin Hoffmins Inside The Actors Studio...where he said at the end of Kramer Vs. Kramer Meryl asked 'How do I look?' And Dustin responded and it was totally unscripted.' So I'm guessing this is the part? Did anyone else hear that?
