  • sher is smart

  • How a person could call her work BS and praise other AbEx artists is beyond me. AbEx is one of the great frauds perpetrated on the art world, and I think that it'll be looked on with curiosity and mild amusement a century from now.

  • evryone knows that this is a scandal right

  • Balloon boy all over again ? ? ?

  • Exit Through The Gift Shop is better.

  • you just know there gonna paint graffiti

  • they don't come to any conclusion in the film, that's why i am here on the internet.

  • The adults that have all the hateful comments sound offended to react so much. I mean the reactions are intense to something pretty innocent. What you see is what you get so their is no fraud here. I think maybe deep down the people so upset are jealous because they wish they could be so creative themselves. I believe anyone can be creative but there still is "an it" that some people either have or don't. This little girl is talented and she is only going to get better as she grows up.

  • once she grows a little bit older (in a handful years), all those collectors will be sitting on paintings they can't resell due to the hype being over. then they'll deservedly regret their stupidity.

  • There is no such thing as a born genius -- there are only those who are willing to work hard, train, study and develop skills, and there are those who are not. This film is chuck-full of those who are unwilling to work hard at anything, except self-delusion and finding any way to stay in front of the camera. All in all, this was a pretty good scam/gimmick, one that generated millions of dollars in bad-art sales, not bad for a group of the most dull people you are every likely to encounter.

  • @Thegreatfearblog YOU sir, are an idiot. You sound ridiculous. Your big words don't make your OPINIONS right..

  • so this is why we have so many kid celebertys

  • Great way to show feelings (kids often show theyr mood in drawings), but I don't think this is kind of an miracle that she can paint some lines and circles, only cause her parents buyed her a mega artist set. I bet she's not the only one kid on the earth who can draw like that...theres plenty of more--they should make movies about them all.

  • yawn...

  • It's an interesting story, but that's the whole point. this is one of those '"the story sells" things. I have this on DVD, and I love it, however as a Degree student, who got the 2nd highest mark (out of some 60 students) for life drawing, all i can see is a 4 year old pushing a bit of paint about .. nothing more or less than we were all doing at her age. I'm sure that collectors will be richly rewarded, but for me, I just can't see anything in her work....nothing grabs me but the story!

  • You call it art, I call it shit. (any 4 year old can draw like that)

  • I think the paintings might be more beautiful when she is very young, because when she gets older, it won't be as abstract. As you see in the end, she's painting the sun, in a way all children paint it...

  • This is the what you get when you allow the group of nefarious social engineers to take over Culture and turn it into what they want. Culture and Art become nothing but a tool to turn our world into a sea of meanlingless, atheism and indifference. It's value is about of who promotes it, who sells and buys it, and what the "experts" say.

  • @thegreatfearblog I can't even begin to comprehend how "atheism" fits there.

  • @Johnny123456789x It fits this way: If you are in touch with the divine and with trancendental values you are more likely to have an ordered mind, as you feel there is order and purpose in this world. If you don't, you're much more likely to fall into depression and dark thoughts, and succumb to indifference and negativity. You are also much less likely to believe in traditional virtue and traditional art, and just take what is the last fad.

  • art is truly what you make it. some people enjoy abstract art, interpreting it and creating meaning for it. some people thinks its a bunch of random crap on a canvas. whether you like it or not, stop critcizing. art is suppost to be about interpreting and opinion. so please, for the sake of all of us, just chill. much appreciated.

  • @dancetillyoudrop14 Why stop criticising. There is good and bad art, as there are good and false values, all is interconnected. It is a subject as worthy of heated discussing as values and morals, don't you think? It's not like we're debating football teams, it cuts deeper that that.

  • the dad is using his kid so he could have the career he never had, since he was an amatuer painter. damn shame

  • @wesner22139 Here is how I see how things unfolded.

The daughter really did something cool when she was like 2. The father did a chin rub and said, ok, I'm gonna modify her painting. Their friend came over and said, wow, I really like that painting. The parents say, oh, ya, Marla did it. Boom, the lie starts and there is no turning back.

There is no doubt in my mind that Marla did not make all those paintings.

  • Abstract art is a farce.

  • Oh hey a kid smearing paint! Oh my a visionary! i hate the art world.

  • Even if she painted them herself, they're still ugly as fuck.

  • What would the great renaissance artists make of Marla and the whole modern art scene? They would be alarmed and appalled.

  • Yeah I remember watching this. Little arrogant girl scribbles on paper and thinks she is good. I think too many dumb people don't know what to do with their money.

  • @yeahtheman How was the little girl arrogant? Lol I mean if you really saw the movie you'd know that the parents and everyone were over-empahsizing themselves while the two kids, Marla and her brother, were left on the side lines.

  • @ChaoticBFly Yes, I did watch the movie. Even though the parents may have been worse, the little girl was still arrogant. I remember she was holding up one of her paintings and saying something like, "Hmmm, I think this will sell for like $20,000." With a smirk on her face. Her brother was trying to get attention, and she said something to her parents, "Why are you paying him any attention? He's not the one who paints!" May not be exact words, but you get the idea. That's arrogance.

  • "Little arrogant girl"?? She's 4 years old in that film.

And don't you realise that at 4 years old, all any child can do is reflect her environment? A child isn't even legally regarded as knowing right from wrong until they're 10 years old.

Marla also said Zane painted one of them. That's innocence, and honesty - the complete opposite of arrogance.

What IS arrogant is a nasty little ass hole adult making ugly, cruel, ignorant statements like this.

  • in my opinion modern art was born, the moment that ''artists'' forgot how to paint...it's much easyer to take a piss on a peace of paper and call it art...luckily Michelangelo didn't think that when he painted the sealings of sistine chapel :)

  • oh watch out!! she just poo herself...let's call it art!!!

  • It's very good art it looks cool, but its not really a picture of anything specific, it's all abstract and random so why what's the big deal?

  • if she could paint like that without her dad coaching her, she'd be a genious.

since her dad has been coaching, she didn't grew up like a born genious, she just got it from her dad that he learned in his years of art

  • Tiger Woods was coached by his dad.

  • @ryanhannaking yeah in case yo haven´t noticed this is art not golf

  • @videorgasmatic: I have noticed. What's your point?

  • Her work mesmerizes me!!! A true real and honest talent!

  • Modern art has been plagued by the same people who claim that space aliens exist and complain that those who don't see them are close-minded. Or, perhaps its full of people who believe yet say that the faithless can't see the Virgin Mary in a piece of toast. That is, modern art reflects a century of irrationality, two world wars and segregation. Its time the world grows up and stops believing in scribbles, boxes, blank canvases, elephant dung and polka dots and starts dealing with reality.

  • Modern art has been plagued by its apparent lack of skill. Most people do believe that any child or hack can create an abstract painting. This film brings this idea to the forefront and this is why it's so entertaining. Furthermore, it poses an interesting question: is Marla a genius or does this prove that modern art is a scam? Either way, if Marla's work bears comparison to DeKooning, then whether her father helped her should be irrelevant. (What if they painted like Vermeer? )

  • modern art has been plagued by an ignorant society, that, even though without any knowledge, feels like being able to judge. its like discussing a colour of a tree that you have never actually seen.

  • This is a great documentary. Up there with "Spellbound" and "Supersize Me." Watched it twice in the same day. Awesome.

  • thats just a kid throwing paint up on a canvas

  • You're missing the point of the movie, which is proving modern art was (as many things thru history) part of a cover-up, a conspiracy if you prefer to call it like that, to abolish that time's leading art, which had a socialist tendence, and replace it with a capitalist tought, modern art can be painted by ANYONE with enough cash to buy art supplies, and sold with profit if you know the right people, some "modern artists" don't even paint their own pictures anymore, they just give their name

  • daikataro

thats one of the finest ridiculus bullshits i have ever read on youtube. sir, if you dont understand what abstract art means, then just do me and the world a favour and stfu about stuff you just dont understand, have a nice day

  • I simply don't care whether she, or her dad did the paintings, they're about as ugly and uninspired as it gets! To compare her to Pollack or Renoir is about as insulting as insulting can be.

Let her have fun but don't tout her as a genius because...she's not!

  • Yeah, I mean, if people want to buy the paintings, let them buy the paintings. What difference does it make if it's as great a work as the world-renowned guys? It's still art. People on this documentary actually wanted their money back (some of them) after watching that 60 Minutes show, and I'm thinking, why? If your own perception of good or bad art can be swayed by something as trivial as a news station's bias, you really should be investing in art to begin with.

  • i just watched the movie. what a bunch of BS if anyone believes she actually painted those paintings. its like night and day the way her paintings look on camera and the ones nobody filmed. you can tell the dad is lying threw his teeth. i would sue them if i bought on of those paintings. i collect sports memorabilia and if someone sold me a fake autograph I'd be raising hell to get my money back

  • totally agree, saw it last night. dad was just ignoring her when Marla is blurting out that her brother did one of them in the gallery, and she didnt even touch it! then begging Dad that it was his turn to finish it, what a bunch of baloney. anyone who buys this "art" is a fool, and has too much money to burn.

  • I just watched the film. What I think happens is that the dad holds her and uses her hand to paint the painting so she feels she does it. That is why she can say that she did it yet asks him for help on camera like you will see.

  • I just saw the movie and is great.

  • Marla and her Dad OBVIOUSLY did the paintings. It's too bad that mom and dad are scamming. They could have marketed the paintings honestly as dad and daughter as I find the ones in question very pleasing. But they're lying and scamming. They screwed up and it's a shame.

  • this simple fact has arised do to simple phsics....if you want me to explaine pm me

    .......

  • I dont see why anybody would buy modern art. I mean look at it! Modern art is basically just throwing paint on a canvas and calling it art. Anyone who bought that child's "art" was scammed.

  • this gives me an idea...

  • Painfully obvious this is fraud. Look at any one of the Pollock-like paintings and ask yourself how the small arm of a child produced those long (3-foot or more) arc-like drippings. Physically impossible. The painter (an adult) had to have been standing over the canvas. And why were the parents titling the paintings? Ode to Pollock, Asian Sunrise, really. Marla had no interest in naming her own work? Fraud. No doubt whatsoever.

  • The father's the fraud, every time that child painted she would include the dad..........I think the poor mother was snowed too which is sad

  • lol, kenny hotz at 1:03

  • Marla did her paintings, end of story. It is so easy to tell. People are taking her paintings way too seriously and over the boundary. "The better ones are completed by her dad, the not so good ones are her own" that is complete bull shit. As I said before, she is only a 4 year old girl. She can change the style any day at any time. It doesn't have to stay the same for the whole life. I think ALL of her paintings look as great as each other, they are all equal.

  • Have any of you even seen the documentary "My Kid Could Paint That?" She does it herself.

They haven't helped their child paint, she does it.

  • its all a scam i think, the parents are cashing in on their own child, soon we will have thousands of them because their getting away with it. i believe its the dad doing the painting, but of course making out that Marla is this child prodogy is the selling point...scam and fraud...

  • That girl is a FRAUD. I will tell her to her face.

  • Funny, I just finished reading an article called "You Call That Art? - Observers, Artists, Critics Rank Children's Paintings With the Masters", and someone sent me this vid.

    This documentary looks really good.

  • How could you watch this and not know the dads a liar of the worst kind from someone who went to art school I cn say if your an artist you can do it whether your filmed or not and two how does the child paint on such big canvases and manage to paint in the middle without crawling over the whole piece and smearing the paint think about that people and last in the film Mara is seen numerous times on camera telling her dad to paint as if he's done it before to her artwork

  • i dont see why all of you cant accept marla and her artwork for what it is. you all just dont want to believe that she is indeed as good as she is because you didnt have the talent when you were her age. heck, you still dont have what she has. and if you watch the movie you can see her paint. alot of people cant preform artistically if they are being watched pr pressed fo time or being told to paint or draw somthing amazing. accept marla and her work for what it is.

  • it would be amazing if she was doing the pieces herself, but it's painfully obvious that the father came up with a 'brilliant' idea to paint these and pass them off as Marla's...... . they just didnt' think far enough into the future to where people would want to know more about them and see some proof. Her dads works really are great, but bottom line he is a liar. I feel bad for the adorable mom. I can't tell if she knows or not. She'd have to though, otherwise she's oblivious.

  • I watched this movie last night and it made me sad for so many reasons.

I really feel that the father doctored up those paintings. Shame shame shame!!!

  • this just makes me sad and I have no clue why.. maybe because it makes adults look desperate

  • So cute

  • Sensational controversy is a hot comodity. The media uses people and they don't care how it impacts their lives. When the cameras go away, this family will live with the pain of being woefully misrepresented. They opened their home, their lives, shared the pride and joy in their daughter's accomplishments and in return they were bashed. Shame on the media. Shame on people who want to join in the assault.

  • you can obviously tell when comparing (for example) "Ocean" and the other pieces Marla was made to do while being filmed (even by hidden camera)....... the paintings that her dad had done are composed well and are balanced and have action in them.... Marla's are little simple drawings and smears and etc spread over the whole canvas. It's so easy to tell. It's stunning to me how people are so oblivious to art and the way people who aren't familiar with it must see, and value it.

  • a lie can be likened to the turning of a screw.... you turn a screw once or twice, and you can still pull it out fairly easily. the more you turn it, the harder it is to pull out.

i havent even seen the charlie rose or sixty minutes clip or whatever

i just saw that segment with that little girl's naive and transparent mother

    it said it all

on the other hand, you don't feel bad for them at all...

even tho that first check was the point-of-no-return, they still knew exactly what they were doing

  • ok, i have absolutely zero idea how i ended up seeing even the last half of this movie, but i did. and after seeing a certain segment (there is a glimpse of it in this youtube clip at 1:23) i knew that poor little girl's parents were lying.

but rather than be out for blood (like the interviewer seems to be) i just kinda feel sorry for them (the parents)

kinda like how you feel sorry for Lennie in steinbeck's of mice and men

  • I love art works of Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael Sanzio, Dutch painter Van Gogh, Chinese painter Chen Hongshou ....etc.

Van Gogh's Expressionism is misinterpreted as modern art it seems....and stupid people who obviously has got a lot of money and doesn't knw how to spend it ..well, they are the ones who promote arts of a 4yr kid. I pity the plight of rich men, who, even though has a real art sense, has no choice but to give in to the demands of a nagging wife(who's got no art sense)

  • " they wanna know who did it...they wanna knw how much it costs...". How stupid of ppl who thought this was some great art. I'm sorry to say that the kid is nothing close to a child prodigy and that her parents are just using her as a means of publicity and a source of money.

I watched the whole thing on T.V.

One thing, it's not art!!! I must say that I'm not a great fan of abstract or modern art. Any 2 yr old cud create one. People have even done it with monkeys and elephants...lol

  • So who comes off as the bigger D-Bag, Anthony Brunelli or Mark Olmstead?

  • These paintings look like they were created an infant. They lack the depth, composition, color and overall emotional impact of serious art. Is that the point of the film? So yes an infant can do this.

  • I think that for the mother to show that kind of distress and emotion is more telling than anything else, and shows that she regrets the whole trust factor lost because of the whole affair--also its obvious that the father is lying through his teeth and has sold his soul for the fame and notoriety--overall an interesting look at a family's experience with fame

  • Could not agree more. You can tell everything on the mothers face.

  • like most good documentaries this one compelled me to watch straight through--observing the story unfold and the struggle for the filmmaker to seek the truth not only for the film but for his own piece of mind--the most uncomfortable scene was at the end where Marla's mother breaks down thinking about how she may have 'damaged' her daughter's childhood while the father looks on and continues to defend his position that he did not assist in creating the paintings

  • maybe parents helped out but i think she could do it

they show her topless—some old-fashioned old adults must be offended

  • This video is ridiculous I love abstartact art but anyone can do it.. Some are just more creative then other. When you are that young you are really creative. I don't know if I believe all of those paintings were made soley by her but they are just decent, regular paintings.

  • I believe you just made a political statement and made it political, Vote Obama.

  • lol at how all the comments are about 9/11

  • I know right? You Tube has the most random topic switches.

  • watch?v=NPOvHs24gak

  • the parents have connections no doubt, probably know people, someone in the media or a gallery owner. nothing happens by mistake

  • holy fing god alright ur pry right about marla but 9/11 was an inside job and was used to distract idiots like u so bush and his corporate buddies could get rich by sticking their fing hands in oil, and obama freaking rules, hes the only guy that wants to help out THIS country so there wont be any more idiots trying to lead this damn country, jesus christ read a fucking book u moron

  • wtf are u talking about

  • obama isnt even a Muslim dumb ass! u must be one of those pansies that believes everything you hear. Why dont you go back to your candyland fantasy world and stick a candy back up your ass?!

  • please die retard

  • Your crazy if you think that the Muslums were stupid enough to do 9/11. Hitler did acts similir to what these politicians have done in order to help start war and keep it going.

Do you really think the muslims would be stupid enough to take down buildings and kill thoughsands in the US??? The only thing 9/11 did was make their lives HELL!! It made things worse for them! Not better! No country is stupid enough to bomb us except ourselves. US is crazy enough to drive plains/demolish bomb them.

  • This country is screwed and half the people in it are ignorant of it. Just like the Germans were stupif enough to believe Hitler we have people stupid enough and ignorant enough to follow Bush into killing tons of innocent muslims on their own land.

  • This is true this countries people are lacking in the think for yourself category and the, work together as a people category. I hope my faith isn't misplaced in Americans, I hope that we are smart enough to elect Obama in 09' - if not i'm out of here. Europe here I come along with a stable euro.

  • If the child painted it, the parents painted it, or the freakin' family dog painted it the piece itself is what should be of value, and I don't see why the artist matters. If you're lucky enough in this land of poverty to have 15,000 to blow on a painting to hang over your couch you have nothing to complain about.

  • I think the reason is because people were fooled into thinking a 4 year old did it so it's fraud. If the family dog did it, I'd dish out 15,000 for it! The father is a pretty good painter, abstract art is controversial, so in order for him to sell his work, he put his daughter in the hot seat. Whether or not the mother knows is a different story. Marla's work on tape is NOT her work when the cameras are not there. Plus the dad paints the entire canvas first & tells her where to put the paint.

  • Okay guitarguy, first of all what makes you think you have the fucking right assume something like that. Maybe if you saw the goddamn movie you would have a better understanding of where the Olmsteds stand. If tihs child wants to paint, and just so happens to be really good at it, why is everyone making such a big deal about it?! She loves to paint, no one is forcing her to do anything! Get your facts straight them come to me and post an opinion. But for now you have nothing to say.

  • She's no better than any other 4 year old out there. Her parents are marketing geniuses that's all. Some people wouldn't have the guts to do what the Olmstead's have done in fear of embarrassing their child, but hey they've certainly found a bunch of idiots to dish out thousands of dollars for their 4 year old's paintings of how a 4 year old would do it, so kudo's to them. It's not hurting me any. However, I've seen Marla's work and I've seen just as good if not better in my kid's preschool.

  • I want to see the father charged serious money for 1) exploiting a child, and 2) lying to the people who purchased his work.

  • This is one of the best examples of how this world is completely LOST!!! What this kid is painting is Decorative Art. Nothing more, nothing less. Idiots will collect it, like baseball cards.

  • Defrauding those poor dumb "art" rubes and exploiting his baby daughter. Nothing wrong with that right?

  • art is art. doesn't matter who did it or how old. get over it.

  • Ok then I have a beautiful work of art done by my one year old!! I'm selling it for $10,000 you interested? My two year old sculpted a replica of the Statue of David!! Don't ask any questions though, if your worried I'm lying, just get over it and buy my baby art!!

  • haha most of the comments are negative because most artists will go to school and live well below the poverty line trying ever so hard to get recognition as an artist. But this little girl is the center of attention and her painting are selling for thousands of dollars. in other words jealously brings negativity.

  • Because she is 4 that is the only reason why. I challenge you to put your 4 year old to the test, bet you'd come out with a masterpiece too. All this kids art should be hung in a gallery of refridgerator doors....it looks like it was painted by a 4 year old. That's not negative, just a fact.

  • Well this tells alot of modern art. Its just big scam.

  • ...u mean abstract expressionism, don't u?

  • "My reputation is on the line here"? realy "what's best" for the child, please

  • I believe that since her father moves her around the canvas, selects the canvas sizes and the colors of paint she will use they are really his work but "child-ized" to give them an original feel.

  • So far from what I've seen from her website and news articles, it started as something innocent and fun, but I think that the father might have pushed a little bit too hard at least at one point. But what parent doesn't? They want their kid to be the best football player, the best ballarina, the best pianist, the valedictorian, and are always cheering and pushing and coaching from the sidelines.

So what's to say the art world is any different?

  • Genius of the art form of painting? I'm that and the genius of the athletic exercise of tennis. I'm actually the first renaissance genius. Welcome to my school.

  • Stop the hate and let the child paint!

  • come ON. That "dad" was defrauding those poor dumb "art" rubes and exploiting his baby daughter because of his own sickness. He is a raging sociopath. Get real.

  • Fraud? Yes. Fraud is what occurs in forums like the the ABC and the CBC that would never invite Amir Bar-Lev to 'find a truth they will later appreciate' who now use his work to boost their ratings. Destroy the family for ratings. That is exploitation.
