Haha, he says there are probably 2000 Aikido techniques, but I can tell you that there are an infinite number of techniques. It was explained to me by Aikido teachers and in Aikido books that you can combine up into the infinite and therefore it goes on to infinite techniques.
@larbo1616 When interviewed, Osensei once said there were about 3000 techniques with around 16 variations each so there are "many thousands". He changed techniques all the time and of course had the concept of takemusu aiki as the ultimate goal which I guess might be what your books were describing. It's understandable that Isoyama Sensei didn't go on to explain takemusu in an interview like this.
I wish the reporter wouldn't talk like a children's show host. She's going on like everyone in the dojo is going to explode into a strawberry and cream cake while the dojo walls turn pink and children sing, "I love kotegaeshiiiii!" in an angel choir voice.
Wow.. this video is amazing. Thanks for sharing Mikefox05, Isoyama Shihan is the keeper of Aiki Jinja. Next in line is Inagaki Shihan. I attended a Inagaki Shihan Aikido Seminar in Brazil in 2007 he´s fantastic.
Saito Hitohiro Sensei is dojo-cho of the new Shin Shin Aiki Shuren dojo. He ran Osensei's dojo for a short time after his father died then formed his own organisation.
I'll see if I can find some time to subtitle the whole thing. For now, here's the gist: They bid each other good morning, she introduces him, saying he trained with Ueshiba-san from when he was a child, then asks him what the main characteristics of aikido are. He replies that aikido has no competition and winning or losing and that it is said to be an art of peace in which one goes beyond that.
She mentions that it is a budo which mind/spirit is said to be important (Isoyama Shihan agrees) and that aikido was born here at the Iwama dojo. She then comments on the loudness of the kiais and asks approximately how many techniques there are in aikido. Sensei replies that there are about 2000 or so. The reporter then points out Inagaki Shihan.
One more request: Can you tell me when was this filmed? I see the date of posting but I am interested in the date of the actual filming. Thanks in advance.
Great !!! I am so glad that this is recent. It is good to see Isoyama sensei in so good condition nowadays. I hope the pain in his leg isn't too much :s Although he doesn't show it it is there :(

Very nice - I just started studying Manseikan aikido here in Kagoshima - in a few years I might check out this dojo as well.
Thank you for the upload!

@ mikefox05
Hitohiro Saito Soke is not appearing because he is no longer a part of the Aikikai organisation. The Dojo is the property of the Ueshiba family.

I've started adding rough subtitles just using the annotations feature. Any help/corrections appreciated.
