People, this album dates from 1974. WMMS used to play "Cars and Girls" every Friday evening. A wonder record which sold diddly at the time. These guys predate punk.
i hear similarities between the dictators and bruce springsteen. who, by the way, is releasing a new album "The Promise" on 11/16! anyone else planning to get this?
wow, people can`t take rock n roll as a bunch of guys having fun anymore? Isn`t what the dictators were doing here what rock was always supposed to be about?
@fallspeed is that recording anywhere on youtube or the internet? This one is great. It rivals the Ramones for sheer surferpunk energy. I still go with the Rivierras myself.
@RossM3838 I downloaded it from a Usenet group a long time ago. I think it's from the compilation "Every Day is Saturday." It's about twice as energetic as this version.
@tacoholic2006 who the hell are you to come around and tell us that this song is "the worst version of this song i've ever heard"? You, my good (shitty) Friend (dickhead) are an asshole (asshole).
I'm a guy who knows good music when I hear it, and bad music when it grates on my ears. (And I must say...you certainly have command of the English language; I have rarely seen such eloquence.)
So go ahead, play your punk rock covers of good songs, if that's what you want to do. But when you crap-up good stuff like that, don't expect the rest of the world to stand up and cheer.
And if you can't stand the heat, 'my good friend', stay out of the kitchen.
There's a point behind this song, just like most of the Dictators' music. They're nowhere near my favorite band, but this was a group built primarily on satire. They had songs glorifying television and wrestling; when they made music like this, it's not supposed to make you sit or stand starry-eyed in awe of how amazing a cover it is.
It's supposed to make you laugh, because that's what the Dictators were about. That and laughing at people like you who take this way, way too seriously.
I've been a musician for about 50 years and have played many types of music (mostly rock) but I failed to see any humor (or satire) in their rendition of this song, sorry to say. In fairness to the Dictators, I'll check out some of their other songs.
As far as my taking it 'way, way too seriously', if you'll look at Mr. HelloIzEveryone's reaction to my comment, I obviously wasn't the one who's taking it so seriously. (Nor did he appear to be laughing at me.)
I think if you spread out the Ramones career and took their best songs, it'd be considered better than this album. But this album i'd personally take over most ramone albums, because it's unique among all of the punk genre.
@HondoCarrer well i think thats cause they have more musical talent on there instruments so they have more to give in there songs where as the ramones(who kick ass)have to make short quick and easy songs so not as much to offer
How's about some material from the Manifest Destiny album which is also superb?

The demo they recorded of this song in 1973 is so much better. The first surf-punk tune, about a year before the Ramones borrowed the idea.
