His brand, Edwards, has a darker tone to it than most tenor trombones. That way he can play in settings like htis and have a more intimate tone, and when he plays in big bands, he can still get the brightness because of its size and the fact that he's Jim Pugh.
it has less to do with the horn than it does with the amount of microphone in his bell. if you look, it is really jammed in there the way people like billy watrous has. and he didn't play on a larger horn like an edwards.
I totally agree man, microphone technique is nearly as important to us horn blowers as it is to a vocalist. Personally I hate having one fixed to the bell, It cuts out a whole new palette of possible tone colours.
Eijiro's solo is awsome. While some of his other solos, especially with this ensemble, are not to hot, this one shows technicall brilliance and a real feel for the style of the piece.

It sounds pretty wussy to me. Maybe it's the mouthpiece he's using? Or he just makes that sound intentionally?
Anyway, Nakagawa's solo was really impressive.
