This was the video that made me start crying over Ianto's death again, but I've come to terms with it, and him coming back to life would kind of make the whole thing less meaningful. And he had a beautiful death scene, one of the best I've read or seen.

What I like about Torchwood is that people actually die. It's a dangerous job, so people will die. It's like HP - the 7th book had so much senseless death, but it just made everything more real and  powerful.

If you watch too much Doctor Who, you start thinking only extras die, and that if you're the companion to the main character then the worst that can happen is you get stuck in another universe. Life isn't like that. He's dead for the same reason Dobby's dead - war's war, and everyone's at risk.

The irony is that the backlash is really a huge compliment to Davies. It's got to be good drama when people are filled with so much grief they start calling the writer of Queer as Folk homophobic.

I think RTD was the type of guy who pulled the legs off insects when he was a kid... He's an absolute genious - but why create something soooooo good then hit the self destruction button and kill everyone off?!

Killing off Ianto was not only killing off a lot of viewers favourite character but also damaging Jack and the way the viewer relates to him. Crazy choice!

Also I never got Gwen, she's improving but was never sympathetically written for women - too flirty with...EVERYONE! Poor Rhys.

Because as RTD said, you can not have something like that happen and not lose a character. The idea of Torchwood is that it's a very dangerous job and nobody really lasts very long. It's very sad, but the writers and such have to be realistic. Torchwood can't defend the Earth and not lose anything. They witness so many people lose the ones they love. They have to be seen suffering too. That's what makes it so real. And you have to admit, when a character dies, you're drawn in.

Sadly, Suzie wasn't the wisest (or sanest) choice, but her death and those of Tosh, Owen and then Ianto, were each based on his initial decision to induct them into the dangerous and short life of a Torchwood operative.

RTD does speak some utter crap though. Killing a character isn't the only way to bring drama to a series, and it is possible for something to be dramatic, but happy in the end (I don't mean a perfect ending, just not RTD's only way to bring about 'drama' - massacre).

I am extremely happy about this declassified video. The choice of song and the composition of scenes are proof of how much the team (and RTD!) adored Ianto as well as the Jack/Ianto relationship and how much they themselves hurt from his death. Too right, it made me bleed, but watching this I feel they made the right decision. As a fan, I feel very much respected.

To be honest kill Ianto is not the only way to bring drama to the series, they can give drama to the series if Ianto was alive and he saw Jack run away again. The death really served no point in terms of the final ending. Jack makes the same decision regardless of what happened to Ianto.

Real drama could have been made out of Ianto and Jack's relationship being destroyed over Jack's decision as easily as it was with this pointless death.

I am iffy about watching the 3rd Series because they have just got rid of three characters in quick succession. And I am unwilling to forge any emotional connections to any new characters, because I now see the ease and frantic nature with which RTD seems to kill them off. Losing the three characters we lost hurt so much, I don't want that to happen again.

Also, wasn't needed. Tosh and Owen died saving the city from nuclear attack. Everything that happened would have still happened with Ianto.

I agree with ShatteredMirror. I believe the real hangup with fans going back to see the fourth season is mostly because they're wary of forging an attachment to "new members". Tosh, Owen and Ianto---we were very close to these characters and they died tragically.

Can we go through with this again? The Torchwood fanbase can deteriorate from that question alone. If we become unattached to the new characters because of it, the show is basically screwed.

I agree with emelisema - if the bullets had succeeded in breaking the glass Ianto would still have sacrificed himself.

The components of the gas were enumberated when the casing was built and are essentially totally poisonous. Ianto would have received full exposure to that gas in killing the 456, and so would still have died to save the children.

I will truly miss him, but the pain of watching it the first time has receded (a little!) Thank you for putting this clip up.

I just, y'know, am really annoyed at RTD for his comment about "good drama makes you bleed", because GOOD DRAMA makes you smile too. Good drama depicts real-life reactions. RTD is implying that his drama is "good drama", something I wholeheartedly disagree with.

And if he EVER hopes to break into American TV, he'd better rethink his idea of good drama and maybe watch a good drama show. I'd recommend The West Wing.

Because he shot at the the glass in front of the 456 in the hope that the glass would break and the "poison" which the 456 breaths will come out and air will fill in the class box where the 456 is, so that the 456 can't breathe anymore because he cannot live on air only the "poison.
