My cheap incandescent bulbs have lasted 2 years now. I don't use them 24/7. I conserve energy by not using them unnecessarily and I have dimmers for mood lighting, saving energy in the process. You can't properly dim CFLs or LEDs, with standard dimmers. Long live incandescent bulbs.
Here just recently came a document about the lightbulb conspiracy. The fact is, in 2001 at a certain firestation in USA, there was celebrated the 100th anniversary of one of the stations light bulbs, which has burned now for 110 years, without failiar and will still for a long time. Because of the high lasting of the bulbs, it was agreed in the beginning of 20th century, that the bulbs will have 1000 hour limit to boost the consument in market. This agreement spread later to other products.
from a cfl. The 25 watt incandescent is pathetic compared to the 25 VA cfl. Even a 60 watt incandescent is dim compared to a 25 VA cfl. So to sum up my opinion:
I've had a cfl go bad and fill my room with noxious smoke -- and I am aware that some cfls (which are illegal in the US, but nevertheless might be found in dollar stores) can actually catch fire. That said, I continue to use them because they are cheaper to operate, safer and cooler (temperature-wise) than incandescents.
It's a shame that they are gonna ban incandescent lamps though, they do have some value. But compare the amount of light that a 25 watt incandescent puts out vs a 25 VA lamp
I can't believe CFLs don't come with warning labels....Yet, cigs do(like nobody knows). For you hippies buy LED light bulbs, sure they cost an arm and a leg, but hey, you want to save the planet right. For no halogen is the way to go till the price drops on the LEDs.
i dont give a shit about the federal governments or energy companies income. they have had enough hands in destroying out environment then anybody who screws in a CFL bulb.
I believe that CFL bulbs would last much longer if the CFL bulbs had large air circulation cooling holes in the base of the bulb to cool off the bulb's power electronics circuitry. The CFL electronic components circuitry operate at too high of a temperature, and that is why the power electronics frequently burn out and smoke up a room with burnt electronic component smoke ( and that is not mercury smoke, but which may also be poisonous ). I have had many CFL bulbs smoke up the room&no air holes.

I agree 100% with the video maker. In the UK you can buy 5 bulbs for £1 at the moment. However power companies have put up the price of energy by double in a year. What with the cost of car fuel going up. The more efficient you become the more they will raise the cost of the power in the first place. I agree its good to save the environment but its got nothing to do with saving money...
You sir are whats wrong with this world. If the energy saving lightbulbs help to reduce the amount of electricity used and help to cut fossil fuel usage or in short help to save our planet, then who gives a damn about people loosing out on money. Even still, the long term benefits of using these bulbs would mean; more jobs for people making the bulbs & in the future more jobs for people working in the renewable energy sector. Wake up and realize that its not all about money.
i would like to point out that the use of less energy is good for the environment... even if utility companies raise rates to make up for the lost revenue, you would be paying the same but polluting less. it still seems like a good idea to go green.
@stickedU yup, and you'll throw em away and break in landfills and get mercury in the water supply, or break in your house and you'll have to bring people to clean up the place from toxicity, oh and lets not forget they give off a ton of UV radiation...so cheers to cancer and poisoning and they wonder why more children are born autistic these days
@roush26 Considering the fact that most electricity in the US is produced by burning coal, by having incandescent light bulbs use about 5 times more electricity than CFL's you are releasing a lot more mercury in the environment using incandescent light bulbs than CFL's. As for the skin cancer issue, as long as your not bolting a dozen CFL's next to your body you have a lot more chances of dying from stupidity.
Coal burning puts greenhouse gasses in the air - not mercury. Discarding CFL bulbs (the squiggly ones) in landfills puts mercury in our water. The message in this video is: don't use less energy. Bullsht. Use less energy and you save money. If total consumption goes down dramatically rates could go up, but it still pays for the individual to reduce consumption.
People like you should definitely have the option of paying no taxes, and in return receiving no benefits of any kind from any gov't entity. As far as I'm concerned, keep your precious money and stay off my roads, bridges, out of my schools and don't even think about setting foot on a sidewalk.. No police or firefighters will come to your aid, and if our country is threatened, you can leave for Canada or Mexico, and you don't get to come back home till it's over.
@mikelcu - while you pay for your roads this way I'm sure you're happy to fund the murders of children and elderly women in Iraq and Afghanistan, the 700 + military bases, the welfare state which consumes over 80% of it's funding on overhead, the bailouts of Goldman Sachs and banks.
While you fund schools this way I'm sure you would write your own checks to pay farmers including Scotty Pippin to not grow crops, to fund the oh-so-successful war on drugs, social security, and postal service ...
You've got me entirely wrong. I am vehemently opposed to both war and bailouts. I'm just not opposed to paying a fair share in order to support society in general. What I don't do is whine about how the gov't is "stealing" money from me when the power structure and laws that allow them to do it were put in place at least partially through our own acquiescence. I've yet to meet an anti-taxer who doesn't value their own self interest above everyone else. Don't like tax? Fight to change laws.
We should invent light bulbs that consume even more energy so we can spend more money on energy in order to maintain an healty economy. Spending is the most important thing in life.

@nmste WAL*MART is lit with florescent lights, Not only that but I haven't actually seen an incandescent in like a year except the one in my sisters ez bake oven. Mercury is everywhere, Just be careful with it and you'll be fine.
2 the utility companies will want to save face and not make it seem like a conspiracy so they will just shut plants down (before you talk about unemployment read on)
3 the less money wasted on just burning fuel to do the same job means a more efficient econonmy which means the money can be put into other things, which creates higher demand meaning more jobs.
4 the demand for new products will provide tax revenue for the government
1)Less fuel use does mean cheaper prices.. until supplies are cut to increase prices to increase revenue (watch what happens to gas supply in the next 6 months..several governments are ran on oil revenues)
2)Utility companies will not shut plants down. They will cut back for a bit on power production and lay off workers( Close a plant that supplies an entire town? I think not, especially if the workforce in unionized)
3)utility companies waste money? power consumption is cut so they will be burning less coal.. how are they wasting money burning less coal and having more money by using less resourses? Profit margin may stay the same, but gross profits will be down(less total profit)
Right what i mean on the whole is other then during winter and some of spring the bulbs do not contribute anything to heating the home. Later is summer they cause waste by creating more heat that has to be removed. (the initial argument about winter is assuming losses in electricity transmission werent a factor). For all the times that the heat is wasted and casues even a negative impact, this energy could be put to better use producing more goods therefore more jobs is what i meant.
CFLs are not everything they are cracked up to be. I found them to be extremely glary and I can detect the difference in color between an incandescent and a CFL, even the modern "soft white" version. Don't tell me I was looking at outdated CFLs, I am a lighting expert and have been into lights for almost 30 years so I know what I am doing. The direct replacement for incandescents will be energy saving halogens.
the bulbs save energy,.. there is nothing bad about saving energy .. as the population of the USA grows so does energy use, and many of our energy sources will reach their maximum capacity soon , years from now our fossil fuels will be used up , so conservation is important, but nonetheless, people should still have the right to choose the bulb they use , incandescent or cfl.. , but really, the new bulbs are not "evil"
Agreed, I want to save energy but I have the right to choose, but also like I've mentioned a few times above, the newer saving energy bulbs which do save energy has a bad drawback, quality issues and dangerous flaw issues. Also the newest ones have a lot more failure rate. The ones from the 90s like those 3 U shaped Philips (the older ones but still instant start) were one of the best made, had no problems didn't burn people's houses down either!
In that past, I would have totally laughed this off...except my utility company hiked the rate up by 9% and school tax went up 7% last week. And according to the local papers, where will that extra 7% of school funding go towards? Sports and Environmental Education.
My brain hurts from the epic levels of stupidity expressed in the video! I want my time back, I thought there just "may" have been some point to this.
Does anyone recognize that it costs FOUR times more energy to MAKE Compact Fluorescent lights in factories than making incandescent?!?! So they truly are not energy saver in the world, only your electric bill, but they are risk of your health from radiation and mercury!
It may take four times as much energy to make a fluorescent light - but a fluorescent light lasts 6 times as long. Whichever way you look at it, fluorescent lights save money and are better for the environment.
That would be true in the 80s and 90s, but unfortunately not true today & they catch fire! Google "Air Raid Sirens CFL" & "impact televideo CFL fires" & "impact televideo CFL fires" also I have seen in some comments in you tube people saying they witness CFL go out in smoke or catch fire...I support saving energy big time, but not in unsafe or unreliable way. I'll just use energy saver halogens or pre 1997 CFL. Another reason, safety of children since they can bump on them & release mercury!
The point is to use less energy, even if you wont have a direct savings it doesnt matter, your same line of logic can apply to anything I buy to save money. OMG the air conditioner consipracy!
I simply love how everyone is all over the "hazardous" aspect of the CFL's. What everyone seems to fail to remember is that every flourescent lamp out there (you know, the long tubes in every shopping mall and shop light in the world) have been around for tens of years with actually MORE mercury in one of them than would be found in 6 CFL's. I just don't see people cowering everytime they go to the mall, down in their basement or their garage. Focus, people!!! We're destroying our world!!
yeah, and cancer rates have soared. Focus moron you ARE destroying the world with all the toxins being spread everywhere.
If you know anything about weather models you'll know that you can literally make them predict anything. Look into it yourselfand stop accepting everything you're given by your government and their Rockefeller funded green groups. We already know that the huge erupting volcanoes under the Arctic are responsible for the melting and for huge CO2 emissions.
Basicly this all leads to two things. Government and Money. If u got money and are or have someone in washington ur god of america till someone with the same stops u. They make more money by having to produce less electricity. Powerplants can cost millions to billions depending on the resource. Oil costs $4 when theres alot of oil still. Oil companys want to start saving their oil so they charge you extra and sell you less. So u can't heat ur house or run ur car becuz they got money and power.
Mercury poisoning is a disease caused by exposure to mercury or its toxic compounds. It is a cumulative heavy metal poison occuring in its elemental form, inorganically as salts, or organically as compounds; the three groups vary in effects due to differences in their absorption and metabolism, among other factors. However, with sufficient exposure all mercury-based toxic compounds damage the central nervous system and other organs or organ systems such as the liver or gastrointestinal tract.
Has ANYONE here witnessed these new bulbs go BAD?? I have!! I was in the livingroom, John had replaced the 3-Way bulb with this cr@p of a bulb which gave LITTLE light though it stated it was 100 watt. . . ANYWAY, I heard this wissing sound, yes WISSING sound, then SMOKE began to billow up through the lamp shade and we both thought the LAMP had finally died. I unplugged it and took it outside. IT WAS THE BULB!! it can cause FIRES, HELLO??? I've stocked up on the regulars, 48 and counting.
There's more cases thank you think have happened....CFL fires! Someone in Cumberland MD lost a house due to a CFL! and I know some in Canada that happened.....They should not be used.....The 80s and 90s bulky heavy ones were better and never caused fires because they were NOT electronic...Circlines are better too.....Today is still sold, just stay away from electronic instant turn on ones...
Aw, fuck! CFL is shit! Mothefucker, environmentalist don't care about their lost house. Environmentalist are idiots! When I had a CFL lamp as who turned on, maybe ghost, but itself is flickering, then smoking. I almost to have fire
in my apartment, I pulled the plug, because it unable to turn off by lamp. I am serious!
@SHADOWBOXERBAYBEE lol I love this story. Although I have been using CFL's for most of my life, I am 18 currently, and have never had a problem with ANY of them. Just because one goes bad doesn't mean they are all terrible and going to rape the world, stealing your children, and eating your big toe. Chill out and make sure the bulb you are installing is not off brand cheap crap and that it is the right bulb for the job. As far as the light goes, I have had no problems at all.
@MrC0MPUT3R You are a child without a clue. The bulb was GE and made in China by the way, outsourced jobs again. Any recommendations? And do you take your burned out bulbs to the store so that they can be discarded safely so as not to contaminate its immediate area, as in THE AIR??? You "chill" child.
@SHADOWBOXERBAYBEE I do take my bulbs to the local recycling center or places like Lowes. I don't do it very often because they tend to last 5-7 years in my house. The amount of mercury contained in one bulb is enough to cover the tip of a pen. Over time this could pose an environmental danger. However, if taken care of, these bulbs can be very kind to the environment and your wallet. As I have said I have been using them most of my life. Outsourced jobs don't have anything to do with the bulbs.
@SHADOWBOXERBAYBEE The new bulbs contain alot of mercury. If you drop and break one get people out of the room. Take extra care to clean the area the light broke.
@SHADOWBOXERBAYBEE The ballast in the light bulb's base went bad, Our electric company gave us a hole box of crappy Chinese made CFLs 4 years ago, yet not one has gone bad. Incandescent cause more fires then CFLs. Oh and charging more for something people are trying to use less of doesn't make scene.
@SHADOWBOXERBAYBEE Just five minutes ago the so-called "energy saving" lamp in my room started short-circuiting, flickering in awful psychedellic colors and it was only seconds, but before i got to turn it off it died with an awful soundtrack of WZZZ BZZZ ZZZZ ZZZEET *crack*! I nearly SHIT my pants. And the smell! Unbelievable. No way. I replaced it with a classic light bulb, and the difference in light warmth is reassuring. Energy saving bullshit. Greedy bastards.
Sad? What is sad is your lack of fact. The utility companies are GIVING AWAY THESE BULBS. They are GIVING REBATES to purchase these bulbs and energy star appliances. Why? Because building more energy plants is WAY more expensive for the utilities.
Here in Australia business also distribute *free* energy saving bulbs and water saving shower heads kits.
Why few people bother to ask what drives this generous commercial gesture is beyond me.
Well the answer has nothing to do with them caring about anyone beyond them self.
Its about the Dollar.
There is a rebate that these business get back from the government that out weighs the cost of giving these packs away. In other words they doing it only for the money.
In the UK what drives the generosity is government regulation. Our old nuclear and coal fire stations are wearing out and would need massively expensive replacement or refurbishment. It's cheaper for the companies to reduce demand (the prices they can charge are capped) until new efficient power plants come on line.
profits and losses are based on usage and production costs. If you use less, you need less, if you need less, then they produce less and it costs them less to produce the net amount needed for total consumption. It doesn't make sense that losses would occur if production paces demand.
I cen't think of a better way of poisoning the entire US population.
Every year, take 12 tons of volatile, highly toxic metal mercury, divide it into millions of tiny packages (CFL bulbs) and distribute them to the general population, with no warning about danger to life.
There is no way that 12 tons of mercury will be recovered at the end of the bulbs life.
Instead, it will accumulate in the bones, brain and vital organs of the general population and their children.
I could think of LOTS of ways of poisoning the US population. Making hamburgers easily available, for example... And hands up everyone who has had fluorescent lights available in their kitchens and garages for decades.
I buy my CFLs at Sam's usually, though Lowe's and HD do have good prices.
I really do hate the "you'll ruin the economy!!!!111!!" fear-mongering that anti-conservationists will use. Didn't we outgrow that in the 80's? I know I outgrew being convinced by it back then.
The average household has 50 light bulbs, with an average life of 10 years. Each CFL bulb contains 20mg of mercury, so the mercury waste from one household is 1 gram every decade. With a toxic TLV of 25 microgrammes per cubic metre, that is potentially 40,000 cubic metres of toxic mercury vapour.
There are 30 million households in the UK alone, so that represents 30 metric tonnes of mercury released every decade, enough to pollute over 1000 cubic kilometres per decade.
Compact fluorescent light bulbs release highly toxic mercury vapour when broken. The TLV (Threshold Limit Value) is only 25 micrograms per cubic meter (OSHA).
It will cost your local authority dearly to provide for their disposal.
They are not dimmable, they are slow to warm up, have a tendency to flicker, and have a poor color.
They will not save much electricity. If you normally need to heat your home, the so-called 'waste' heat from conventional bulbs helps heat your home.
Heat from the Lightbuld does heat your home witch can save energy in heating cost however this means southern US states wuld have to turn on more Conditioners. No one wantz to give up the luxury of not sweting.
Take time to heat up, yes some do
Flicker, yes wen energy currentz known as elektrosmog radiate tomutch energy.
In this case id be more worryd wat elektrosmog does to my body than the light flickering.
Buy cheaper ones means risk of fires....The cheaper quality more damage in your house can happen....google "Air Raid Sirens CFL" and you'll see one of the first results is about the CFL and check the scary pic of a burnt CFL....there's other pages about em too!

3)utility companies waste money? power consumption is cut so they will be burning less coal.. how are they wasting money burning less coal and having more money by using less resourses? Profit margin may stay the same, but gross profits will be down(less total profit)
moronpolice 3 years ago

The direct replacement for incandescents will be energy saving halogens.
silverliner14b 3 years ago
thank you, there are other ways, without flourescents

the bulbs save energy,.. there is nothing bad about saving energy .. as the population of the USA grows so does energy use, and many of our energy sources will reach their maximum capacity soon , years from now our fossil fuels will be used up , so conservation is important, but nonetheless, people should still have the right to choose the bulb they use , incandescent or cfl.. , but really, the new bulbs are not "evil"
KougsMotors454 3 years ago
Agreed, I want to save energy but I have the right to choose, but also like I've mentioned a few times above, the newer saving energy bulbs which do save energy has a bad drawback, quality issues and dangerous flaw issues. Also the newest ones have a lot more failure rate. The ones from the 90s like those 3 U shaped Philips (the older ones but still instant start) were one of the best made, had no problems didn't burn people's houses down either!

what ever the cost to our pocket, we have to make changes and fast.
dawnhilton 3 years ago
In that past, I would have totally laughed this off...except my utility company hiked the rate up by 9% and school tax went up 7% last week. And according to the local papers, where will that extra 7% of school funding go towards? Sports and Environmental Education.

Does anyone recognize that it costs FOUR times more energy to MAKE Compact Fluorescent lights in factories than making incandescent?!?! So they truly are not energy saver in the world, only your electric bill, but they are risk of your health from radiation and mercury!
jecwhiz 3 years ago
It may take four times as much energy to make a fluorescent light - but a fluorescent light lasts 6 times as long. Whichever way you look at it, fluorescent lights save money and are better for the environment.
skank1961 3 years ago
That would be true in the 80s and 90s, but unfortunately not true today & they catch fire! Google "Air Raid Sirens CFL" & "impact televideo CFL fires" & "impact televideo CFL fires" also I have seen in some comments in you tube people saying they witness CFL go out in smoke or catch fire...I support saving energy big time, but not in unsafe or unreliable way. I'll just use energy saver halogens or pre 1997 CFL. Another reason, safety of children since they can bump on them & release mercury!
jecwhiz 3 years ago
The point is to use less energy, even if you wont have a direct savings it doesnt matter, your same line of logic can apply to anything I buy to save money. OMG the air conditioner consipracy!
antiantiduck1987 3 years ago
The utility companies won't lose a dime. They just jack up their rates so you pay the same money for using less energy.

We're destroying our world!!
keyboards0822 3 years ago 3
yeah, and cancer rates have soared. Focus moron you ARE destroying the world with all the toxins being spread everywhere.
If you know anything about weather models you'll know that you can literally make them predict anything. Look into it yourselfand stop accepting everything you're given by your government and their Rockefeller funded green groups. We already know that the huge erupting volcanoes under the Arctic are responsible for the melting and for huge CO2 emissions.
allthings509 3 years ago

Holy sh*t! It happened to me with my fixture is
incorrect with CFL bulb. I can't believe it!
My goodness!

There's more cases thank you think have happened....CFL fires! Someone in Cumberland MD lost a house due to a CFL! and I know some in Canada that happened.....They should not be used.....The 80s and 90s bulky heavy ones were better and never caused fires because they were NOT electronic...Circlines are better too.....Today is still sold, just stay away from electronic instant turn on ones...
jecwhiz 3 years ago
I said, I smelled badly, it's scary!
vikingscool 3 years ago
oh yes this is a FACT! you should google "Whitehorse house fire" and "Cumberland MD CFL fire" and "Impact CFL fires"
so you are not the only one!
jecwhiz 3 years ago
@SHADOWBOXERBAYBEE lol I love this story. Although I have been using CFL's for most of my life, I am 18 currently, and have never had a problem with ANY of them. Just because one goes bad doesn't mean they are all terrible and going to rape the world, stealing your children, and eating your big toe. Chill out and make sure the bulb you are installing is not off brand cheap crap and that it is the right bulb for the job. As far as the light goes, I have had no problems at all.
MrC0MPUT3R 1 year ago

MrC0MPUT3R 1 year ago
@SHADOWBOXERBAYBEE - did you know regular bulbs can cause fires too?
gjvmnd 1 year ago
@SHADOWBOXERBAYBEE The new bulbs contain alot of mercury. If you drop and break one get people out of the room. Take extra care to clean the area the light broke.
DoctorTachyon 1 year ago
@SHADOWBOXERBAYBEE The ballast in the light bulb's base went bad, Our electric company gave us a hole box of crappy Chinese made CFLs 4 years ago, yet not one has gone bad. Incandescent cause more fires then CFLs. Oh and charging more for something people are trying to use less of doesn't make scene.
mecamaster 6 months ago
@SHADOWBOXERBAYBEE Just five minutes ago the so-called "energy saving" lamp in my room started short-circuiting, flickering in awful psychedellic colors and it was only seconds, but before i got to turn it off it died with an awful soundtrack of WZZZ BZZZ ZZZZ ZZZEET *crack*! I nearly SHIT my pants. And the smell! Unbelievable. No way. I replaced it with a classic light bulb, and the difference in light warmth is reassuring. Energy saving bullshit. Greedy bastards.
I967 5 months ago
Sad? What is sad is your lack of fact. The utility companies are GIVING AWAY THESE BULBS. They are GIVING REBATES to purchase these bulbs and energy star appliances. Why? Because building more energy plants is WAY more expensive for the utilities.
This shoots your stupid argument down totally.
pimplewood 3 years ago 3
Here in Australia business also distribute *free* energy saving bulbs and water saving shower heads kits.
Why few people bother to ask what drives this generous commercial gesture is beyond me.
Well the answer has nothing to do with them caring about anyone beyond them self.
Its about the Dollar.
There is a rebate that these business get back from the government that out weighs the cost of giving these packs away. In other words they doing it only for the money.
ookland81 3 years ago
In the UK what drives the generosity is government regulation. Our old nuclear and coal fire stations are wearing out and would need massively expensive replacement or refurbishment. It's cheaper for the companies to reduce demand (the prices they can charge are capped) until new efficient power plants come on line.
skank1961 3 years ago
profits and losses are based on usage and production costs.

CleanGreenLight 3 years ago 11
Actually water fluoridation and Chemtrails are more dangerous than a fluorescent bulb.
hazballs09 3 years ago
I could think of LOTS of ways of poisoning the US population. Making hamburgers easily available, for example... And hands up everyone who has had fluorescent lights available in their kitchens and garages for decades.
skank1961 3 years ago
@CleanGreenLight Why have I seen this copied and pasted onto several videos now? and by different people at that? Is there some memo I didn't get?
Simple solution, by and LED light bulb...

I really do hate the "you'll ruin the economy!!!!111!!" fear-mongering that anti-conservationists will use. Didn't we outgrow that in the 80's? I know I outgrew being convinced by it back then.

Let me try some numbers:
The average household has 50 light bulbs, with an average life of 10 years. Each CFL bulb contains 20mg of mercury, so the mercury waste from one household is 1 gram every decade. With a toxic TLV of 25 microgrammes per cubic metre, that is potentially 40,000 cubic metres of toxic mercury vapour.
There are 30 million households in the UK alone, so that represents 30 metric tonnes of mercury released every decade, enough to pollute over 1000 cubic kilometres per decade.
CleanGreenLight 3 years ago
Compact fluorescent light bulbs release highly toxic mercury vapour when broken. The TLV (Threshold Limit Value) is only 25 micrograms per cubic meter (OSHA).
It will cost your local authority dearly to provide for their disposal.
They are not dimmable, they are slow to warm up, have a tendency to flicker, and have a poor color.
They will not save much electricity. If you normally need to heat your home, the so-called 'waste' heat from conventional bulbs helps heat your home.
CleanGreenLight 3 years ago
i Agree with some Pointz,
They do have a blueish collor !
