The British Union Jack on the flag symbolizes the deep relationship with England, which the foundations of Hawaii's modern kingdom was adopted by British and Westernized systems.  The white,red and blue strips comes from the American flag, which also symbolizes the friendship with America and adoption of their demorcratic systems.

Although, it was considered to be officially hoisted, it was not because all Hawaiian flags including the Kanaka Maoli Flag was destroyed after a brief British occupation in 1843. Only more then a century later, the flag was re-discovered and claims to be the true Hawaiian flag. But all Hawaiians support both the current and Kanaka Maoli flags

@Zizumia3 The Hawaiian flag was in existence 38 yrs. after the 13 colonies declared they were independent fr England, although some say as early as 1808 a uniquely Hawn. flag was created by Capt. G. Beckley. The Union Jack shows the Hawaii (island) Kingdom's ties to England when Kamehameha I cededed that isle kingdom to England. It wasn't until later the various stripes, particularly the blue stripes were added.

This Flag is the Flag of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi. It was created during the reign of King Kalakaua. NOT during the time of the British Protectorate. When the US stole, yes I say STOLE, Hawaiʻi they co-opted the Hawaiian Flag and made it the Territory Flag; and then with the fake Statehood vote in 1959, -a rush to offset the UN Mandate to give Independence to "colonies", the rush was to vote Statehood. There was NEVER a treaty of annexation! Under International Law the Kingdom still exists.

@TBustah Nope, Hawaii's King was promised protection by the British, in that Britain would defend it from other foreign country such as France. In return the Union Jack was flown throughout the island, and the King of Hawaii later adopted it as his own.

Basically, they would fly either the Union Jack or Old Glory over the palace, depending on which country's representatives were visiting the king. This was around the time of the War of 1812, so US-UK relations were strained, and British ambassadors would get offended if the palace flew Old Glory and vice-versa.

So, in 1816, Kamehameha commissioned this flag to appease both parties.
