We will never see battles like this again (even with KERS and DRS) as long as drivers are allowed "one move" off the racing line to defend. Simple as that. Debate the merits of "defending" vs. "blocking" all you want. This clip shows everything you need to know about fierce but fair racing. Totally badass.
Two great fighters battling at the track and you dont see someone pulling his rival off the road to crash, F1 has changed so much since then, today the only thing that matters for the teams is the result... Unfortunately
People who say that today's f1 sucks in comparison hasn't watched today's F1. Starting from 2010, almost every race became more eventful. There was a record overtaking count in Turkey for god's sake. Monaco was actually exciting to watch, so was Spain.
This is true and genuine Formula 1, not the bullshit FIA did in Malaysia with Alonso and Hamilton. I mean this is motorsport not barbie playing with Ken, what do you expect to see in a race.
A man and and a wild animal of a racing car- a manual gearbox, no computer stuff....and no passive safety. As we all know a crash was never a good outcome in these days of F1.
By cheating of course. Fact was his car gave him a HUGE advantage for all of those years, just look at how awful he is doing now. Gille's son also beat him one year despite Michaels best efforts at cheating ;)
@SeanVaIen I don't know for sure but Jacques was definitely not one of the best drivers in the sport. He won races only when the Williams was the very best car around. Even in 1997, many F1 journalists feel he won the championship largely by having the fastest car. I knew he wouldn't win a single race after Williams lost the Renault engines.
@SeanVaIen Oh yes, Schumi was the best because in 1994 he had the "best" ILLEGAL car and he won by cheating with the crash with Damon Hill. He tried to do the same with Villeneuve's son, but fortunatelly Moxley did something good, by disqualifying the german cheater. And when he didn't have the best car, he always went to Moxley maFIA boss to arrange the things in his behalf (1998, 2003, 2005, 2006). So, next time think over and over again about your "be the best" concept.
@mithrandir8489 Michael IS the most controversial driver, but he is the 2nd best driver in F1, in my opinion... THe benettons he drove were handling like a rubber duck, m8... it was schumi's brilliance who brought him up... I was never his fan but i cannot admit how great a driver he is
@MrTann2010 I see your point, in matter of achievement, nobody can deny what the german did, but it's not a secret that the 94 Benetton was illegal and Schumi took advantage of that and ok, that's fine. What I don't think is fine is to get a championship by crashing, as it happened in Australia 94. About the Ferrari era the way contributed with the development of a hopeless car just to take it to the top is marvelous, it's a remarkable abbility that few drivers have.
as i came to understand it,Villeneuve never drove to finish a race,HE drove to WIN it !.
Stats would kinda prouve me right cause he s win/entry is rather low ;).HE whipped that FERRARI till it dropped like a dead horse.I remember in does years(god i fell like my father) lmao, gear box s ware nt has tought as today(they had to clutch and shift, small detail but oooo so importante) and Villeneuve went trought them like a guy goes trough a dozen donuts lol
@Orikion I've received a Ghost message by u.. nvm Orikion. But yes, Gilles said "I race to win. if i can't win i race any way i like it, Its my life" Change gear with your car. an F1 Gear Stik was 10 times more hard to MOVE it ;) with all bumps have not to exit from the gear ;) pilots had usually the hand injured. Gilles had blood in the hand in monaco 81 ;) is not easy drive a F1, today they've a lot of helps.. as traction control, Refueling. Who know what is that in 1979?
"His car control was extraordinary, even compared with the many talented drivers I have had the opportunity to drive against over the years. ... [He drove a] Grand Prix car to the absolute limit of its ability."
@xXgatorsk1llXx Well for a start it's a different era. They're hardly going to drive cars 30 years old on new circuits. And in Formula One it is each era to its own as so much changes. You could say, back then, the teams and drivers weren't professional enough to race. In '10 we had a field where the top 10 in qualifying would be covered by 8 tenths of a second. Back then there would be seconds between positions.
As for guts; I can imagine they all would have raced.

Anyone who says Hamilton sucks...doesn't know there ass from a hole in the ground and should just STFU before they make themselves even more embarassed for being such a colossal dumb ass. Hamilton has the BEST F1 record of any driver in history in their first 3 seasons...most podiums wins and poles, plus a WDC and not to mention he made 32 passes in the first 4 races of this season so far!!! Hamilton Rules and the rest drools!
Gilles Villeneuve embodied perfectly the Ferrari legendary spirit of tenacity and search for victory. Maranello is so important to racing history like Vatican and Meca to religion.
Real competition, not 2010 F1, the driver was the difference compared to our time where the car do everything - Gilles Villeneuve, un des meilleurs pilotes au monde
i watch for scenes in movies , like field of dreams with kevin costner, the scene with james earl jones where he does the speech, instead of baseball use race or racing has marked the time. or the movie tincup at the end when he sunk the put and he walks off the green him and rene russo saying
it's the greatest 12 of all time , why it's immortal . i know it's just a play on words but it makes me feel good
hamilton sucks everybody goes like ooh hamilton this hamilton that.. he's much worse then any driver ever and certainly a lot worse then villeneuve there's only one better driver and that was senna. hamilton would'nt be able to drive such a hard guy your comment sucks dude!!!
I don't really follow F1, but didn't Hamilton almost win in his very first year ever of competition against guys with seasons of experience? Then he won it the next year, right? How can you say that guy is bad? o_O
come on, you cant seriously compare hamilton with gilles villeneuve!! gilles is a legend, lewis is far away from that. gilles was one of the most exciting drivers ever. what about raikkonen? he had a lot of memorable races, like suzuka 2005. or senna of course..
Ahh.. back in.the days of Turbo Glory 80's & Murry Walker's commentary on F-1 racing. Oh how I remember this race when the dominant & era leading Renault's great battles & Driver Rene Arnoux & his teamate frenchman Jean Pierre Jagwee vs il Tifosi's Scuderia Ferrari and Canadian Gilles Villeneuve & S.African W.C. Jody Schekter. Man what a cool T.V./video rebrodcast of this era inwhich when leading meant nothing! ! ! Just to day dream of the days gone bye when TURBO Power just begun.
Who the hell is Jean Pierre JAGWEE??? I also remember this race (AND I EVIDENTLY ACTUALLY DO REMEMBER) when the dominant and era leading Renaults were driven by Rene Arnoux and his team mate Frenchman, Jean Pierre JABOUILLE!
@tommykl Your comment about the race between Arnoux and Villeneuve is more than a fact, it is A TRUTH. They were, they are and they will be called " The Masters of the F1.
@tommykl To kill or to be killed was considered part of the job back then... Nothing to do with today $uper$tar$ with their computerized's rolling space shuttle...
I'm just in aw this is simply magical, the best duel I've never seen (I wasn't born then) ever, I'm so glad I can see this even with the live comentary, pure magic
Bravo ! Bravo ! Bravo ! Merci Gilles, en tant que Quebecois, comme toi, je suis vraiment fier de ta determination et de ton gout de la victoire. Repose-en paix avec le sentiment d'avoir accolpli de merveilleuses choses ici-bas.
Most impressive thing is the respect they show one another.
They're in the midst of a balls out battle for position, but they give each other just enough space. You don't see that anymore, and that's really too bad.
@tubatits : true. they both back of during the battle, and each of them nearly loses his own car, because he made room for the other one. that's just soooooo cool of them. fuck all modern racing compared to this. now i know again, why i don't watch f1 anymore since senna's death.
I've like got tears in my eyes with joy, and you struggle to keep the smile back, RIP Villeneuve, and pretty much F1 aswell, it's OK now, but my GOD this battle just NEVER seizes to amaze me... Fantastic!
But you also have to consider, that this is a one off moment in F1 history.
In the other races of 79 there wasn´t anything like this, and even in that race most people thought that it would be really hard to overtake here before the race.
Of course racing has changed, and today races are often a bit more boring, but if you would just take short bits, like most people only know of past races, there would still be some great moments, like Heidfeld´s overtakings in Silverstone last year...
True, but back in these days, these guys were RACING drivers, they had no driver aids or anything to keep them from messing up, everything that happened with the car was controlled by them, not the team or a fancy electronic system. Nowadays, it's a case of "he who has the faster car will win" not "he who fights the hardest and drives the best will win". I can't even watch it now, you get about 7 overtakes per race, cuz drivers are too worried about sponsers to do what they're paid for = race.
best driver didn´t win back then though, because even back then the car was the biggest factor, that´s why in 78 Lotus was winning nearly everything when they had the best car, and in 79 after everybody copied from Lotus, it was a mixed season, with the most consistent team winning both championships.
Even in the first seasons of F1 after the war you had to sit in the right car to be the champion.
That's true to a point, but back then it was down to the drivers for the most part. At least they didn't sit back and let whoever is in front just run away with the win, they fought and fought for it. Maybe not so much in the 70's and early 80's, because I haven't watched most of those races, and I have no idea what happened before the 70's, but in the mid 80's all the way to the mid 90's, it was driver vs driver.
It's all good, but now it's just a business, so I don't really bother with it.
Gilles tyres must have been completely shot...on the thirtieth anniversary of his death...I salute him....more balls than a pool table.

Perenboom 2 years ago
I don't really follow F1, but didn't Hamilton almost win in his very first year ever of competition against guys with seasons of experience? Then he won it the next year, right? How can you say that guy is bad? o_O
ElhaymRabbit 2 years ago
come on, you cant seriously compare hamilton with gilles villeneuve!! gilles is a legend, lewis is far away from that. gilles was one of the most exciting drivers ever. what about raikkonen? he had a lot of memorable races, like suzuka 2005. or senna of course..

Ahh.. back in.the days of Turbo Glory 80's & Murry Walker's commentary on F-1 racing.
SleepingGiant1966 2 years ago 3
Who the hell is Jean Pierre JAGWEE??? I also remember this race (AND I EVIDENTLY ACTUALLY DO REMEMBER) when the dominant and era leading Renaults were driven by Rene Arnoux and his team mate Frenchman, Jean Pierre JABOUILLE!
MarkPMcGrath 2 years ago
If Spa 2008 is anything to go by, the FIA don't allow battles like this anymore.

0Panchovilla0 2 years ago 3
Most impressive thing is the respect they show one another.
They're in the midst of a balls out battle for position, but they give each other just enough space. You don't see that anymore, and that's really too bad.
tubatits 2 years ago 5
@tubatits : true. they both back of during the battle, and each of them nearly loses his own car, because he made room for the other one. that's just soooooo cool of them. fuck all modern racing compared to this. now i know again, why i don't watch f1 anymore since senna's death.

Incredible. These days you don't get anywhere near as many overtakes in a whole SEASON than you did in those 5 laps or so.
iamthestigsixsixsix 2 years ago 4
But you also have to consider, that this is a one off moment in F1 history.
In the other races of 79 there wasn´t anything like this, and even in that race most people thought that it would be really hard to overtake here before the race.
Of course racing has changed, and today races are often a bit more boring, but if you would just take short bits, like most people only know of past races, there would still be some great moments, like Heidfeld´s overtakings in Silverstone last year...
BMWizardofOz 2 years ago
True, but back in these days, these guys were RACING drivers, they had no driver aids or anything to keep them from messing up, everything that happened with the car was controlled by them, not the team or a fancy electronic system. Nowadays, it's a case of "he who has the faster car will win" not "he who fights the hardest and drives the best will win". I can't even watch it now, you get about 7 overtakes per race, cuz drivers are too worried about sponsers to do what they're paid for = race.
iamthestigsixsixsix 2 years ago
best driver didn´t win back then though, because even back then the car was the biggest factor, that´s why in 78 Lotus was winning nearly everything when they had the best car, and in 79 after everybody copied from Lotus, it was a mixed season, with the most consistent team winning both championships.
Even in the first seasons of F1 after the war you had to sit in the right car to be the champion.
BMWizardofOz 2 years ago
That's true to a point, but back then it was down to the drivers for the most part. At least they didn't sit back and let whoever is in front just run away with the win, they fought and fought for it. Maybe not so much in the 70's and early 80's, because I haven't watched most of those races, and I have no idea what happened before the 70's, but in the mid 80's all the way to the mid 90's, it was driver vs driver.
It's all good, but now it's just a business, so I don't really bother with it.

Wasn't Mansell in that black Lotus?
