The CH701 may be ugly, but I guess it is designed to be easy to build. More aerodynamic fuselage would be more difficult to build at home. These are sold as kit planes, or you can purchase just drawings and build it completely yourself.

My first initial impression was that it was one ugly plane too, but it didn't take long for me to change my mind, and also appreicate the reasoning behind its STOL design, and also nowadays think they are pretty cool looking.
