I have 3 hdd's one for a windows boot and general software. One dedicated to installing games on. and a 3rd disk with high write capability for media and for recording video on.
I've also heavily tweaked the windows registry to disable various annoying and unnecessary operations to give my pc better performance than what most users with a similar spec as mine will experience.

@message3381 you may want to double the specs i listed if you rather not tweak your windows registry.
Go for a 4 core cpu and a GTX 500 series or an ATI of similar power. As always, get a strong performing hard drive with fast read access.
