  • wow in the ens he got tons of chorus, but sounds great..

  • I wonder where all the clothes of Jimi have gone...I never see him with the same clothes, he's like the Queen of England...

  • he is the greatest i wished i lived during this time

  • This is the second time I saw him play. The first was in a gymnasium at Arizona State Campus I think.I don't remember a lot of stuff considering the stuff I was taking. Anyway;he blew everyone's mind with just a small stage and a few lights. Watching him play was a trip in itself because he seemed to feel good, and he was a master showman. The guitar really seemed like an extention of his arm..He dropped straight down on to his back without missing a note. A master musician/sonwriter/performer.

  • He didn't see the large crowds when he walked on stage at 3am, and only seeing the first 5 rows of people.

  • Thats really interesting. Live versions of watchtower always fell far short of the studio version (which was a masterpiece) but i was always impressed with the isle of wight version. Serious props to jimi for performing a song like that in front of a crowd twice the size of woodstock. That takes balls lol

  • Beautful,

I cannot imagine what a chrystal clear recording would sound like, beter still live. missed this by 9 or so years.

Most importatantly is we have his recordings.......and of course Jimi's Spirit and blood is still with us !

    Thank God !

  • john coltrane+jimi hendrix= the best

  • you got to have feeling and soul to cover any hendrix song and SRV had it!

    fk mayer

  • Awesome...it's ok about the sound..This is a Treasure...God give him some drugs and a guitar in the heaven...RIP Jimmy

  • jetzt weißte bescheid!

  • cant believe jiimi was in Phx !!!!

  • He also played at ASU, Tempe, AZ, in the Gym and Soft Machine was the opening act.

That was on February 5th, 1968 and the cost was $3.

  • I was their also. He seemed to be very tired. When he passed away, it was very upsetting for me. I was in awe of his playing ability, and him self, as a superb musician. I lived in Phoenix from 1961 to 1973.

  • I was at this concert. Whoa, you just never know what you'll find on youtube. Totally amazing.

  • : O

  • You lucky bastard!!!

  • This is indeed one of the most beautiful renditions of this tune Jimi ever did. But if you want to hear some SMOKING rhythm and blues guitar, perhaps skuzjib could post Jimi's version of Come On Pt. 1 from this show. It's KILLER!!

  • unbelivble, no one can beat hendrix man

  • I was there. Ticket was $3 - NO joke. He blew everyone away....

  • you're a lucky guy, right time right place. Guess I was just born too late, eh? :(

  • Lucky - you bet...but OLD - lol

  • Beautiful! I always loved the live Little Wings over the over produced album version. The stripped down live ones are so sad and emotional. Especially from Royal Albert Hall. Just gorgeous and touching.

  • wow! beautiful end!, at this days no guitar player could get that level of expresion, he was amazing.

    thanks!

  • That's the beauty of Hendrix, even if he did the song what some people would call "wrong" it was still awesome.

  • ever heard of carlos santana, same level of expresion, but way different with jimi hendrix of course.

  • I've heard about ten live versions of this. Each one is played and sung perfectly, but all different. Incredible.

  • My favorite Jimi Hendrix song!!

    God Bless Jimi Hendrix!!

  • Oh my lord, at the end, its just beutiful in some way........breatless

  • Wow, I didn't expect that ending. The four chords at the end sounded like liquid magic. Every time he plays a song he makes it different, like a snowflake, and it never ceases to amaze me.

  • haha dang never heard of stevie ray vaughn. vaughan's version is good tho ;).

ps true hendrix fans check this out i just found it.

search: Jimi Hendrix - RARE LIVE Little Wing Jam w/ Butterfield

  • i know! the last 2:00 especially:))

  • vaughn was not in the same league with hendrix.......no one was...

  • @eyezonthepryz Thank you! Finally ,someone that sees the light! You need a well-trained ear and a deep knowledge of Hendrix to know that. Unfortunately, not enough people listen to him to know that. It's nuances, not just solos that so many use to compare Jimi to everyone else. And that's not it at all.

  • Little wing Phx Sept 4 68...Note- Jimi never played Watchtower live until 1970. The German 69 show he supposedly played it-he mentioned the song while in front of the mic and the crowd went nuts, thinking he was going to play it but he didn't. He couldn't remember the lyrics well enough. If you ever hear "Hey Baby" from Berlin exactly two years from the Phx date later he starts playing it and the crowd starts cheering wildly, probably cause they think it's Watchtower. Same progession, wrong key.

  • @diamondbackseye The truth is Jimi DID play "All Along the Watchtower" on January 14, 1969, in Germany. It always baffled me as to why he didn't play it more often, but then when I hear the versions he did in 1970, where he either messed up the words or started in the wrong key, I guess maybe that's a clue! If you notice, at the Isle of Wight in 1970, he looks at Billy Cox, then jokingly counts the frets as if to make sure he starts off right. On July 4, '70, he did start in the wrong key!

  • @jimistreets You are correct, I obtained a copy of the 01/14/69 Munster, Germany concert tape last year and it does contain Watchtower....I'd give it a C+ rating, as it's probably the first time Noel Redding ever played it and the first time the Experience ever performed it. Far superior live versions can be heard from Boston 06/27/70, Copenhagen 09/03/70, and Fehmarn 09/06/70. Jimi apparently had poor eyesight, and since the dots on the strat neck it'd be on the bottom, he would count frets...!

  • Wow live at the Madhouse....thanks! I will walk around there knowing Jimi was there...

  • at the same tour jimi hendrix performed also at sanbernardino CA,well i live there, and a friend of mine has a uncle who who was there and he has the audio of the complete perfomace, there is an amazing version of all along the watchtower, i have heard the audio and is so badass, last week i asked him if i could have a copy of that n' he gave it to me ,but is in cassete and i don't know hot to upload it HELP!!!!

  • All Along the Watchtower was played at the San Berdoo gig on 6-20-1970, first song they played that night and it's smoking hot! You can find the download of it online pretty easy. Watchtower was not played at San Berdoo in 1968, it was played live for the first time in Germany, Jan. 1969

  • I believe it was at the Swing auditorium in San Bernadino. My buddy saw him there. He also saw Jimi at the Shrine auditorium in LA. That of course is another discussion.

  • I can already see his face before those last notes... he made a boo boo! The Wah Wah saturation really makes that solo shine... beautiful.

  • WOW SKUZGIB - a GEM - Thanx! HAUNTINGLY BEAUTIFUL - Love the leslie at the end! Royal Albert Hall is another 'haunting' version.

Jimi wrote this about his mom...and so it probably hit him real 'deep...'

SET LIST: Are You Experienced? Come On, Little Wing, Voodoo Chile, Fire, Spanish Castle Magic, Foxy Lady, Like A Rolling Stone, Sunshine of Your Love, Hey Joe, Star Spangled Banner & Purple Haze.

Just in from San Diego the night before, Jimi was off to San Bernardino the next day!
