It may have been, Josh. I don't have the phone in front of me -- it's my friend's phone and I was trying to help him root it by watching your video. Everything was going fine until there was no 'User Profile'. Once everything is downloaded and installed, we can't get it to work as a tether and no one can connect to it. :(
@TRoehrig2 yeah, I was having issues with the epic 4g as well! It had Froyo, but now it has EH17 Gingerbread and tethering with wifi tether 3.1pre6 works great!
After I install the tethering program (the one you went to on the video was no longer available -- but I downloaded another one) -- I went to settings and there was no option for User Profile above the Enable WiFi-Encryption. Did I miss something?
Excellent video man, the threads on XDA can be confusing, this makes it much clearer. I had some trouble getting it to connect to my computer, but other than that, it was great. Thanks for the help.

I have watched tons of videos on rooting and by far yours is the best. It's very clear and you definitely have a choice of words very advanced from theirs. These people obviously tried to just "wing it" (or you're just smarter than them) either way I am convinced. I am a little shaky on the back-up and recovery deal, this is used incase something does go wrong? Also if you could give me a simple list of what I need to DL on my phone and then what I need for my comp that would be stella...
@mpando6625 recovery is so that you can wipe your phone, clear cache, apply new kernels, recoveries, roms, and etc... so yes, if you mess up your phone, you can restore a backup. If you have a stock rom and you are rooting for the first time, YES! Freaking backup your whole phone. Then when you wipe your phone and apply a new rom, you can do an Advanced restore and just restore your data... So it's like you never wiped your phone in the first place.

So rooting the phone and using the wifi tether basically creates a wifi hot spot through your phone which can be used on your computer??? As far as your question, using the one click root is pretty much as easy and safe as it's going to get. I would say it's impossible to brick your phone using something that simple, but who knows. It doesn't erase ANYTHING. It simply gives you superuser and roots your kernel. So yes, you can download wifi tether and send free internet to any wireless capable devices, without paying..
@ParkersPlaylist I AM NOT THE BEST at explaining shit from scratch. I know that. I don't take baby steps. you download a ZIP you unzip it, you run the batch file that roots your phone. it's easy as hell.

@wwjoshdew I got it to root the day you answered me, I just was too tired by that point to respond. But here is the rub. My battery is dying at an alarming rate now. I've done all the common sense tricks to extend battery life, but it'll go into the 20% range within 3-4 hours of being unplugged and little to no actual usage (also, not on 4G). Is this a symptom or rooting? Or would an OEM battery go to shit in 10 months?
@imautobot you sound like you need your batterystat.bin file deleted (reset basically) with Calibrates your batter. Search for Battery Calibration in the Android market and it will reset your battery.
@MrCog96 Driver issue dude! You have to uninstall all samsung usb drivers, reboot, and reinstall them. If that still doesn't work, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE try to troubleshoot on your own. I can tell you that people have come to me saying that their USB cable was screwed up, reinstalling the correct drivers, or using a different computer, resolved their issues.

@cuevaslegrand I updated the description! it's this link, ifile.it/nq4i0o6/Epic4G_FroyoUpgrade_EB13_Tool.exe it will flash your phone to Android 2.2.1 and it will GET RID OF ROOT, all apps, EVERYTHING. When you take it to the Sprint store, they are going to do the same thing. So in the end, you're going to have a phone that needs fixed, but can't because it's rooted. OR you are going to one click unroot it, and SPRINT is going to reset it. So I highly recommend just running that program.
The video was extremely helpful thank you! The only glitch I had on my install was the wifi. I turned my phone on to 4g and it kept shutting when I tried to tether. But not on 3g. I finally realized that the specific area where I was does not have a strong enough 4g signal to make it work. So I stuck to the 3g. Thanks again!

@cuevaslegrand i don't know what's going on. your best bet would be to submit a bug report to the google wifi tether project page. i have done it before. they do get back to you.
@cuevaslegrand you need to download an app called "wifi tether". search for it on your phone (using google.com) and click the downloads link. then download the pre14 version and install it. if your phone is crashing, you may need to flash stock. i have a video on how to do it. it's the EC05 video on my channel.

@lyoll wow. a little to much ey. Are you using wifi tether 3 pre 13? There is a samsung epic 4g profile and you need to select that. just go to google on your phone, search for wifi tether, and click on the little downloads link in the search and it will bring you to the newest version.

@lakobe244life it's an app called "quick boot", it's free, and you can long press anywhere and create a "shortcut" to either, reboot, recovery, power off, bootloader, or hot boot (reboots just android, not the bootloader).

@cuevaslegrand uh, I don't know. I actually used Odin. But it should only take a few minutes. And sorry it took 20 minutes to reply. I am working right now. Can't read and/or reply to you when the phone rings. but i would uninstall all samsung usb drivers, reboot, then install swupgrade again and run it.

@cuevaslegrand I updated the description! it's this link, ifile.it/nq4i0o6/Epic4G_FroyoUpgrade_EB13_Tool.exe it will flash your phone to Android 2.2.1 and it will GET RID OF ROOT, all apps, EVERYTHING. When you take it to the Sprint store, they are going to do the same thing. So in the end, you're going to have a phone that needs fixed, but can't because it's rooted. OR you are going to one click unroot it, and SPRINT is going to reset it. So I highly recommend just running that program.

The video was extremely helpful thank you! The only glitch I had on my install was the wifi. I turned my phone on to 4g and it kept shutting when I tried to tether. But not on 3g. I finally realized that the specific area where I was does not have a strong enough 4g signal to make it work. So I stuck to the 3g. Thanks again!

@cuevaslegrand i don't know what's going on. your best bet would be to submit a bug report to the google wifi tether project page. i have done it before. they do get back to you.

@cuevaslegrand you need to download an app called "wifi tether". search for it on your phone (using google.com) and click the downloads link. then download the pre14 version and install it. if your phone is crashing, you may need to flash stock. i have a video on how to do it. it's the EC05 video on my channel.

then, i found out what Rooting was so i started to look for how to root the epic.
i think i 've been to like 13 different videos to figure this out lol and there you go

@OCDmadaFker yes dude! There is a newer version of one click root but it's that simple! Plug your phone up to your computer and click a button! i wish it was that easy for the transform for all of my subscribers that have a hard time using swuprade to flash roms.

@OCDmadaFker DO NOT! The Evo Shift can be overclocked to 1.5ghz using CyanogenMod and you will receive timely updates from CM to include future versions of android and they make amazing roms.

@OCDmadaFker YES! To root it, they have instructions on the site! It will have a link on the Cyanogen rom page on how to root. I would be jealous because it may be 800 mhz, but it's just like the t-mobile g2's processor and it's a very fast 800mhz! Plus it supports Firefox Mobile!

@lyoll wow. a little to much ey. Are you using wifi tether 3 pre 13? There is a samsung epic 4g profile and you need to select that. just go to google on your phone, search for wifi tether, and click on the little downloads link in the search and it will bring you to the newest version.

@lakobe244life it's an app called "quick boot", it's free, and you can long press anywhere and create a "shortcut" to either, reboot, recovery, power off, bootloader, or hot boot (reboots just android, not the bootloader).
