@fatturdburger Water moves by a hydraulic gradient replacing losses from evapotranspiration. As far as there is water in the deposit underneath the rooting compartiment gets recharge according to the demand. Technically it is self-watering as it can get water according to a demand replacing variable losses.
I am not surprised by our doubts because even in the patenting system Hydrology is played by inventors, attorneys, and examiners as lay people not trained in Classical Hydrology.

if you did'nt top it up with water the plants would die so it aint self watering realy unless the plants walk to a tap to top themselves up.

Well, I got PhD in Soil Science and it gives a broad range of understanding on the subject. I have three US issued patents on the subject. Good luck.
