@OscarP282 It will be a few years before I can move there, I'm visiting there this summer for 2 weeks and im sure I will fall in love with the city as soon as I see it :-) Me encanta España!! haha!!! Im excited
Catalan is closer (historically & linguistically) to Occidental (spoken in Southern France) than any other romance language. Phonetically it resembles Occidental and Portuguese much more than it does with Spanish, Italian or French. Most prominent phonological features of it: a) "dark" (velarized) "l", b) pronounciation of unstressed "o" as "u", c) unstressed "a" & "e" are reduced to a "schwa", in most dialects and d) "j & soft g" are pronounced as in French and Portuguese.
@TheMoreTheMerrier21 also occidental lingua is more nasalized like the french but not as greatly with some of the old latin rythm seen on other romance lingua(shorthanding) i recently read that alot of nasalized romance languages are such due to the former ppls being celtic like the portugese were ibero celts and the french were gauls
@kaindrg Sounds possible... It's quite common for languages around the world to adopt certain features from languages of the people who lived among them or nearby. It's pretty ironic, though, since no surviving celtic languages have any nasalised vowels, except for breton, but that's because of french influence, not the other way around.
@se404 If we keep as one nation, we are going to lose our culture and identity. Spain, today, does not accept that we actually are a multi-cultural country. For the World, our language is Castilian, and our culture the Castilian one. If Castilians and the rest of Spain realise that we are a multi-cultural and multi-linguistic country, we could find our place there.
Greeting for you.
It's funny that Catalan sounds very similar to Portuguese in many aspects even though Portugal shares no border with Catalonia. Of course Catalan has many words that actually are very different from the Portuguese ones, however its phonetic aspects sound much more familiar to us Portuguese speakers (Brazilian Portuguese, in my case) than Spanish, which is historically closer to Portuguese. Some words are even pronounced the same way ("uns onze", for example).
@Homoclassicus People tell me that Catalan is similar to Spanish, French, Portuguese and Italian. It shares a lot of similarities with them. I couldn't say to which one Catalan is closest, but I agree that Catalan is very close to Portuguese :-)
@OscarP282 I speak Portuguese- decently. I agree. Thank you for the video, there are NO catalan speakers where I am right now (US military in Korea) and trying to learn it with out someone that speaks it is HARD
@sabotagedarkness What do you mean about "the difference between Catalan and Castillian accent"? I don't see why you say "accent", do you mean "language"?
Outra vez, grazas pola reposta, talvez vémosnos despois.
OMG i love catalan!!!! Im a native spanish speaker from costa rica, and im currently learnin portuguese, i want to learn french, italian, romanian, galician, and CATALAN!! so cool...
i want to learn this language so bad :D and i also want to learn french and italian i speak pretty good spanish but not enough i also would like to learn latin and portugese all latin languages are beautiful and cool and i have cousins from costa rica so its good for me to learn spanish sorry bad english
catalan is closer southern french Occitanian (they are same family) but generaly most romance latin languages have rythm, roll, and other similarities the only one that is really different is Modern french which is a northern dialect of france thats dominated during the period of nationalist and during the Vergonha or the shaming the french media tried to make the southern speech extinct. to this day people of the region are still scaredto speaking in front of outsiders becuse of Vergonha
@TheFabregasHater It sounds quite different. Obviously speaking Spanish and/or other romance languages helps to understand it, but it doesn't sound like Castellano.
@OscarP282 Thanks for the video. After studying Castellano for so many years, I have been trying to learn Catalan. Hearing it more and watching videos really helps. Thanks again. :)
@FredMayX2 Wanna know s'thing curious?During XVIIIth century,Catalonia and England had an important commercial relationship.English sailors that travelled to Catalonia liked a local alcoholic drink whose color was yellow.Yellow in Catalan is "groc" (pronounced /grok/), so English sailors created the word "groggy" to refer to someone drunk for drinking too much of that beverage.Today in Catalonia someone is said to be "grogui" (pronounced like groggy) when he feels sick, faint or dizzy :-)
@FredMayX2 Sure. Both French and Catalan belong to the family of "Gallo-Romance" languages. However Catalan has common features with italian too. For instance: in Italian, "questa" is "aquesta" in Catalan whereas in French is "cette". Or "donna" in Italian is "dona" in Catalan, whereas in French is "femme". A final example: "aún/todavía" in Spanish is, in Catalan, "encara",which resembles "encore" in French and "ancora" in Italian.Yes,knowing Catalan makes learning romance languages easier!
@FredMayX2 No, you have not to learn the Castillian dialect at all because Catalan is a language, not a Spanish dialect. For instance, "perro" is the same for all Spanish dialects (as far as I know), whereas in Catalan it is "gos". Other examples: "Cómo te llamas?" -> "Com et dius?"; "Ocho, nueve, diez" -> "Vuit, nou, deu" ; "pequeño"->"petit"; "mujer" -> "dona"; "sucio"->"brut"...
@zezinho733 Certainly this is true. I think it's because Spanish misses a lot of phonemes. For example, Catalan and Portuguese both have the strong "s" like the "s" in "salad" and the soft "s" like in "easy".Spanish only has the strong "s". Spanish doesn't have the "g" like in "pages". Catalan and Portuguese have them. Spanish doesn't have either the "sh" sound like in "shoes", etc...BTW the Spanish "j" does not exist in Portuguese nor in Catalan.
yea at least in portuguese we actually pronounce the "J". im not sure about catalan. for example how is Jose said in catalan? because my spanish speaking friends call me "Hoesay" (im putting it this way to get pronunciation.) while in my native portuguese im really "Joesay"
@zezinho733 The same in Catalan. What I wanted to mean is that Portuguese and Catalan haven't got the Spanish "j" that sounds like a strong "h" in English like in "Hello". In Catalan, the sound "g" like in "paGes" can be written with a "g" or a "j" (depends upon the vowel combination). In Catalan, "José" is "Josep", and the "J" is pronounced like the "g" in "pages".
@LeTuba what about the colombian spanish? I always wanted to know how they listen to us.. :) 'cause We are able to understand 95% when You guys speak! :) I think We all speakers of a romantic language are able to understand each other! spanish, italian, portuguese, french, etc. no matter the country where You are from!
@smacksaw yeah, this type of comments makes me think why some people in Catalonia, after 30 years living in it, they are not able to speak or understand Catalan (people form the rest of Spain).
@OscarP282 I *do* think the same. Many foreign people is able to quickly understand and speak Catalan in a couple of years.I knew an Italian girl that only took 6 months to understand it.The difference is that foreigners have a different perception of Catalonia than Spaniards. The latter ones don't mind to learn Catalan because "Catalonia is Spain".Indeed,Catalonia is currently a country embedded in Spain, but it is NOT Spain in many aspects, specially in culture and language.
@wmmvb It is the same in Canada. It is mandatory to study french for 7 years in school but because of the tension between French speaking Canadians and English speaking Canadians, many never learn the language. And again, this goes along with cultural and language differences that are comparable to Catalonia and Spain.
You keep sayinng that you bore me but that's not true. Why does your profile say that you live in Germany? Anyways, I guess we should stop talking because we're clogging the chat :)
I'm learning spanish right now and once I speak spanish pretty well, I propably want to learn catalan. How long do you think it will take to learn catalan? (months, years?) (meses, años?)
@GuidingSlasher Like everything,it highly depends on how much time you spend to practice it.Catalans are polite and if you speak Spanish to them they'll answer you in Spanish, specially if you're foreigner. However,if you speak Catalan to them, check what happens into their eyes :-) Catalans appreciate foreigners that try to integrate into Catalan society by learning its language.A good example is the English writer Matthew Tree. Listen to him in this video (in English): watch?v=RYquex2ITwc
@haolesbrothers I think so too. I think the Latin languages are beautiful, especially the Romance Languages. I have not heard any other language family that is pleasing to the ears (in my opinion), except maybe Japanese. Portuguese, I don't know so much about the language, but it sounds nice too. Also is it true the Romance languages has words from Arabic or is it just Spanish? Yes I know some Spanish words come from Arabic, but I think that our Romance languages sound better.
yea i'm from california and can understand mexican spanish due to the high amount of mexicans living here. i can understand most of this too. spanish, catalan and a lot of italian sound like dialects of the same language ratherbeing identified as seperate languages. i feel many of the romance languages are far more similar than the germanic languages, seeing as how i can only understand a few words of dutch and scandinavian
Vull coneixer Barcelona aviat.
Jo soc d'America i parlo tambe Holandes, Castellà, i Anglés molt bé, i Estic aprenent portugues, italià i com pots veure El Català
I am a native Spanish speaker. and I can understand what he said. I think Catalan is a very nice language, I think it is probably closer to Italian or Portuguese than it is to Casatilian, although Catalan is still very close to Spanish. I can easily understand over 90% of what he said.
It's so similiar to Portuguese actually that I could understand everything. I think Portuguese is more similiar to Català than it is to Castellano in some ways. I've been to Catalunya for 2 or 3 times; it is indeed one of the most beautiful places in the World. I have one question, though. Which language is more commonly spoken in that region? Castellano or Català? Mercès for the video.
@Glorenzelg1 Thanks for your comment, Glorenzelg1, :-). I would say that Spanish is more spoken in Barcelona and its surroundings. Catalan was forfidden by the ruler Franco for almost 40 years. Now we are recovering little by little the use of Catalan. Anyway, the Catalan language is an strong language in Catalonia, Valencia, Balear Islands and other places.
I speak Spanish(castellano) and I understood many many phrases and sentences you said..

@TheMoreTheMerrier21 also occidental lingua is more nasalized like the french but not as greatly with some of the old latin rythm seen on other romance lingua(shorthanding) i recently read that alot of nasalized romance languages are such due to the former ppls being celtic like the portugese were ibero celts and the french were gauls
kaindrg 5 months ago

Homoclassicus 6 months ago
@Homoclassicus People tell me that Catalan is similar to Spanish, French, Portuguese and Italian. It shares a lot of similarities with them. I couldn't say to which one Catalan is closest, but I agree that Catalan is very close to Portuguese :-)

catalan is closer southern french Occitanian (they are same family) but generaly most romance latin languages have rythm, roll, and other similarities the only one that is really different is Modern french which is a northern dialect of france thats dominated during the period of nationalist and during the Vergonha or the shaming the french media tried to make the southern speech extinct. to this day people of the region are still scaredto speaking in front of outsiders becuse of Vergonha

@FredMayX2 Oh! the word "groggy" also exists in English!
wmmvb 9 months ago
@FredMayX2 Wanna know s'thing curious?During XVIIIth century,Catalonia and England had an important commercial relationship.English sailors that travelled to Catalonia liked a local alcoholic drink whose color was yellow.Yellow in Catalan is "groc" (pronounced /grok/), so English sailors created the word "groggy" to refer to someone drunk for drinking too much of that beverage.Today in Catalonia someone is said to be "grogui" (pronounced like groggy) when he feels sick, faint or dizzy :-)
wmmvb 9 months ago
@FredMayX2 Sure. Both French and Catalan belong to the family of "Gallo-Romance" languages. However Catalan has common features with italian too. For instance: in Italian, "questa" is "aquesta" in Catalan whereas in French is "cette". Or "donna" in Italian is "dona" in Catalan, whereas in French is "femme". A final example: "aún/todavía" in Spanish is, in Catalan, "encara",which resembles "encore" in French and "ancora" in Italian.Yes,knowing Catalan makes learning romance languages easier!
wmmvb 9 months ago
@FredMayX2 No, you have not to learn the Castillian dialect at all because Catalan is a language, not a Spanish dialect. For instance, "perro" is the same for all Spanish dialects (as far as I know), whereas in Catalan it is "gos". Other examples: "Cómo te llamas?" -> "Com et dius?"; "Ocho, nueve, diez" -> "Vuit, nou, deu" ; "pequeño"->"petit"; "mujer" -> "dona"; "sucio"->"brut"...
wmmvb 9 months ago
why does catalan sound more like portuguese then castillano?
zezinho733 9 months ago
@zezinho733 Certainly this is true. I think it's because Spanish misses a lot of phonemes. For example, Catalan and Portuguese both have the strong "s" like the "s" in "salad" and the soft "s" like in "easy".Spanish only has the strong "s". Spanish doesn't have the "g" like in "pages". Catalan and Portuguese have them. Spanish doesn't have either the "sh" sound like in "shoes", etc...BTW the Spanish "j" does not exist in Portuguese nor in Catalan.
wmmvb 9 months ago
@wmmvb
yea at least in portuguese we actually pronounce the "J". im not sure about catalan. for example how is Jose said in catalan? because my spanish speaking friends call me "Hoesay" (im putting it this way to get pronunciation.) while in my native portuguese im really "Joesay"
zezinho733 9 months ago
@zezinho733 The same in Catalan. What I wanted to mean is that Portuguese and Catalan haven't got the Spanish "j" that sounds like a strong "h" in English like in "Hello". In Catalan, the sound "g" like in "paGes" can be written with a "g" or a "j" (depends upon the vowel combination). In Catalan, "José" is "Josep", and the "J" is pronounced like the "g" in "pages".

It amazes me that because I speak Spanish and French I can understand this so easily and not even need to translate in my head.
smacksaw 10 months ago 2
@smacksaw yeah, this type of comments makes me think why some people in Catalonia, after 30 years living in it, they are not able to speak or understand Catalan (people form the rest of Spain).
OscarP282 10 months ago
@OscarP282 I *do* think the same. Many foreign people is able to quickly understand and speak Catalan in a couple of years.I knew an Italian girl that only took 6 months to understand it.The difference is that foreigners have a different perception of Catalonia than Spaniards. The latter ones don't mind to learn Catalan because "Catalonia is Spain".Indeed,Catalonia is currently a country embedded in Spain, but it is NOT Spain in many aspects, specially in culture and language.
wmmvb 10 months ago
@wmmvb Totally agree
OscarP282 10 months ago
@wmmvb It is the same in Canada. It is mandatory to study french for 7 years in school but because of the tension between French speaking Canadians and English speaking Canadians, many never learn the language. And again, this goes along with cultural and language differences that are comparable to Catalonia and Spain.

@irvinc101 Merci!

wmmvb 10 months ago

@GuidingSlasher Months. If you know Spanish or a romance language, Catalan is not a big deal.
OscarP282 10 months ago
@GuidingSlasher Like everything,it highly depends on how much time you spend to practice it.Catalans are polite and if you speak Spanish to them they'll answer you in Spanish, specially if you're foreigner. However,if you speak Catalan to them, check what happens into their eyes :-) Catalans appreciate foreigners that try to integrate into Catalan society by learning its language.A good example is the English writer Matthew Tree.
