I never believed in busing; But I would not call it social engineering. I did not like it for the same reasons you stated. I always thought African American schools would have been better served with really good teachers and larger budgets. I'm a teacher now and I still believe that. Busing was a bad idea but not social engineering.

@bronxbomber38 - in a way that's the story of NY... most of the neighborhoods the Italians inhabited - there were usually Germans or another group there before them. Ethnic neighborhoods will forever change because large groups of immigrants are always attracted to NY. You don't have many Italians coming to the US again... like the Germans before them... so they "lose" some of their ethnic neighborhoods.
I grew up in this neighborhood and I can tell you that prior to the 90's, this was an amazing place to grow up. Unfortunately since then all the original residents have left and been replaced by Mexicans, Albanians and more Mexicans. The only Italians left are the vendors (who all live elsewhere) and the few old folks who refuse to leave. In ten years there will not be a single Italian left in the area.
My great granparents, grandparents, and parents were all raised in the Bronx. My parents moved right before I was born after a guy was beat to death with a pay phone infront of their apartment building. I still visit my grandparents there and its sad when I listen to my parents stories of the Bronx and see what some of those areas are like now.

Is it only immigrants and no north americans who live in this area bronx? Here in sweden we have some mixed suburbs with only 5-10% swedes, often immigrants from Africa, middle east and south americans. The crime rate is always much higher in those areas.

Took the kids to the zoo last week and went to eat up on Belmont Ave. How depressing, the Italians are gone except for a few stubborn oldtimers. The resturants are still there but it's mostly dollar stores and medical centers. It's become an absolute mess but like most other NYC neighborhoods I blame the people who bailed out for the suburbs more than I blame the people coming in.

@SecularTechnology Clearly you do not go to the Belmont section of the Bronx often. While the Bronx has virtually no Chinese immigrants, there are lots of Albanians here... and there have been in the Belmont "Little Italy" section since the 80s, which is why they built the mosque in Belmont. The many Albanian cafes, restaurants, and social clubs in the Belmont district (even on Arthur Ave. and 187th St.) show anyone passing through there that such a large commnity exists.

I grew up in the NE Bronx in the 50's. Dyre Av, Pratt Av, Edwenwald Rd. Single and 2 family homes, yards. Mostly Italian and Irish. A few Sweds, Greeks. No crime. LOTS of open fields and unbuilt lots. Sledding down Monticello Avenue's "deadman's hill".
Summer visiting neighbors sitting out on the porches and stoops. Mt St Michael's boys school annual festival. The Blessed Virgin apparition at Seaton Falls Park. PS 68. Pizza made with REAL hand tossed crust - so large it filled the table. Hmmmm

All the negros are moving out of the state because they dont like to work so they cant afford to live in Cali. I never believed in busing; But I would not call it social engineering. I did not like it for the same reasons you stated. I always thought African American schools would have been better served with really good teachers and larger budgets. I'm a teacher now and I still believe that. Busing was a bad idea but not social engineering.

Ethnic neighborhoods will forever change because large groups of immigrants are always attracted to NY. You don't have many Italians coming to the US again... like the Germans before them... so they "lose" some of their ethnic neighborhoods.

I grew up in this neighborhood and I can tell you that prior to the 90's, this was an amazing place to grow up. Unfortunately since then all the original residents have left and been replaced by Mexicans, Albanians and more Mexicans. The only Italians left are the vendors (who all live elsewhere) and the few old folks who refuse to leave. In ten years there will not be a single Italian left in the area.

My great granparents, grandparents, and parents were all raised in the Bronx. My parents moved right before I was born after a guy was beat to death with a pay phone infront of their apartment building. Took the kids to the zoo last week and went to eat up on Belmont Ave. How depressing, the Italians are gone except for a few stubborn oldtimers. The resturants are still there but it's mostly dollar stores and medical centers. It's become an absolute mess but like most other NYC neighborhoods I blame the people who bailed out for the suburbs more than I blame the people coming in.

While the Bronx has virtually no Chinese immigrants, there are lots of Albanians here... and there have been in the Belmont "Little Italy" section since the 80s, which is why they built the mosque in Belmont. The many Albanian cafes, restaurants, and social clubs in the Belmont district (even on Arthur Ave. and 187th St.) show anyone passing through there that such a large commnity exists.

I grew up in the NE Bronx in the 50's. Dyre Av, Pratt Av, Edwenwald Rd. Single and 2 family homes, yards. Mostly Italian and Irish. A few Sweds, Greeks. No crime. LOTS of open fields and unbuilt lots. Sledding down Monticello Avenue's "deadman's hill".
Summer visiting neighbors sitting out on the porches and stoops. Mt St Michael's boys school annual festival. The Blessed Virgin apparition at Seaton Falls Park. PS 68. Pizza made with REAL hand tossed crust - so large it filled the table. Hmmmm

I ask the merchants where they live and they all live upstate New York and commute to work. Myself, if I could, I would live on Arthur Avenue. If you leave the neighborhood don't blame outsiders for moving in. That goes for Malberry Street as well. The Italians moved out and the CHinese took over.
