  • This guy is epic.

  • I can't get over how much he looks like Gaddafi.

  • that's my dad. mama says he's gonna build me a boat next year.

  • quksh

  • Who would buy that after this dudes mouth has been all over it? lol

  • @LightWeightBro lol i dont like the idea of some hairy shirtless dude blowing his mouth all over my xaphoon, lol

  • Impressive.

  • quit puffing your cheeks

  • Oh look, it's some hippy in his garage.. he's doing something with- ...

    hmm....

Oh look, it's a brilliant master craftsman at work in his shop. Very, very cool.

  • Ok. I've never seen an instrument made before my eyes like that much less a clear explanation and demo at the same time. A true craftsman at work.

  • is this papa b? :)

got one of his signed ones on the way

  • killer man!

  • amazing!!!!!

  • He is making a tuner hole. It will virually shorten the instrument. It's an unfingered hole, which means a hole where you don't put a finger on while playing. Hope this makes it clear...

  • what does he explain at 0:38 ? i can't hear it clearly.... please help :)

    thx

  • @andyconte just that theres a hole that u dont need to put fingers on (there for tuning reasons)

  • @monkeymanfiftyfive

    ok thanks :)

  • Master builder AND e plays the hell out of that thing.. :)

  • legal

  • i met brian today in santa cruz. i was walking on the other side of the street and heard him playing on bench and crossed the street to ask what instrument it was. what a great sound! very soulful and romantic to me. hope i can get my hands on one of these soon

  • I think Brian Wittman re-invented the Bamboo Sax, and make it mass-produce-able. I just bought one from him for my own birthday.

A reeded bamboo instrument, called the "HePingGuan" or the "peace tube" actually appeared in the Nam Sung Dynasty (1127-1279AD) of China. It is still being played today, mostly in Shanghai (where the 2010 EXPO is held). The company making this is there since 1956.

  • sounds more like a clarinet

  • Woah. That's pretty impressive. Nice work, Brian, thanks for bringing this instrument to all of us out here!

  • Does anyone else find it really hard to get a sound out of it? I guess you'd have to blow really hard into it? I have never used a reed instrument before.

  • @rcaste I'd only played things like harmonicas, recorders and flutes before, and compared to those I did find it took a lot more blowing (for the first couple of days I'd get light headed!), but after a week or so it just became second nature.

  • @surfdigby Damn I wish I knew that before I returned it soon after. I tried it for two days and thought that my chest was gonna explode. I might check it out again in the near future. Thanks for the info btw.

  • you are a good tradesman very skilled

  • making the mouthpiece is a pain in the ass..

  • 呢個人好勁

  • I met Brian at the Northern California Renaissance Faire this year. He's terrificly nice guy. I bought a C bamboo Xaphoon. It's size means I can take it on business trips and have some fun. It was simple to learn. There are a lot of videos of people showing off the Xaphoon on YouTube.

I'm wondering if Brian invented the Xaphoon, or the Maui Xaphoon?

    -Frank

  • i hope he makes mine with his shirt off! lol

but that is a very great instrument

  • I spoke to this guy outside Centre Pompidou today!

  • i know him

  • This is the guy who invented the instrument.

  • i love those small saxophones

    SO COOOLLL

  • I have more Xaphoons, bought in germany for 15 years ago!.

It is a very good instrument and very good price!

But I think it is a little bit more difficult to play good on it than to play good on sax! For Sax- and Clarinet-players I can recommend to have one ( in Bb ) or one more ( in C ) in collection!

  • wow it takes him less than 5 minutes to make such a superb instrument!

  • good job!!!

  • i wonder if he burns his mouth

  • I WANT ONE !!!

  • I was thinking that as I watched it...

  • me too

  • ordered one today:)

  • video is great..but no mouch information in building one..to fast..nothing in how to make the reed...distant for holes....etc...he is a master..very talented person..I thanking him for this video....

  • My goodness. He's really audio talented. Amazing.

  • He is a genious! I've just bought one, and it amazing how such a tiny instrument can make such nice and deep sound. Haven't got the hang of it yet though..

  • Holy Smokes! Can't wait to get mine!

  • jeebus your good at guessing the hole positions

  • very nice

  • He's f-ing fast at this, and plays great. It's good to see the inventor in action.

  • Thanks for this video

  • Much respect!

  • Yeah I've just ordered one!

    How excited am I!!!!

    Whooop whoop
